ROSE OF ALABAMA

  • Published in 1846, by G.P. Reed of Boston, and is credited as follows on the original sheet music: “Words by S.S. Steele, sung by A.F. Winnemore & His Band of Serenaders.” The song became popular among the thousands of fortune-hunters heading to California looking to strike it rich during the 1849 Gold Rush.
    “The Rose of Alabama” lyrics tell a light, good humored tale about a banjo-playing young black man, who sneaks away on a moonlit night from the slave quarters on his plantation to court his sweetheart, Rosie (the “Rose” of the song), an enslaved young black girl on her plantation across the river. Everything is going ‘swimmingly’ until suddenly his banjo falls in the river! From that point on, the song seems to be more about a lost banjo than a lost love.

    My Great, Great Grandfather was born in Alabama. He was in the siege of Vicksburg and raised up in a trench and was shot in the head by a sniper. He is buried in Meridian, Mississippi. From what I could tell, the only thing brought back was his homemade buckskin pouch to hold his bullets which I do have in my possession. Thank you for singing this.

    I also recently watched "The outlaw Josey Wales" and this song is featured in the film. All in all, great interpretation of the song, it's a pleasure to hear.

    • @2ndSouthCarolinaStringBand
      @2ndSouthCarolinaStringBand  11 месяцев назад +3

      It sure would !!! Sadly, more than a day late and probably a bit more than a dollar short (to paraphrase the old saying). We retired at the end of 2019, having DIS-banded at the end of 2019, due to aging-out mostly. Most of us started together in 1989, when we were already in our mid-40's. The 'annoyances' of aging, PC/Cancel Culture and in late 2019, the restrictions of Covid all combined in a sort of perfect storm that made it clear the time had come for us to 'drop the mic’ and leave the stage... We did play once at Secessionville/Boone Hall in 2002, I believe. My brother Fred and I share a Confederate ancestor - J.D. Banks, 7th Tenn Cavalry - and so for many years tried to attract some attention from the SCV in hopes of playing for just such an event. We'd have loved it ! Truly sorry to disappoint, but for us, 'the ball is over'. Let me know if I can help with finding someone else.

    • @MajorJackstreet
      @MajorJackstreet 11 месяцев назад +5

      @@2ndSouthCarolinaStringBand Well darn. If I was higher up in the SCV and had joined it sooner, I definitely would've attempted to have y'all involved. But I hope you all are enjoying your retirement, so many people including me love the music that y'all have played, and well over half of the ones I know about come from here. If it wasn't for y'all, I probably wouldn't have ever listened to this quality music, and I don't think I would've even been interested to find out about my ancestors and end up joining the SCV... Its crazy how simply just music can change someone's life. It's sad that today is filled with so much cancel culture and just about everything is considered "Offensive", even just the simple teaching of history... But thank you all for the amazing quality music that you have played. God Bless.

      These aren't actually bluegrass. Bluegrass is named after Earl Scruggs band, The Blue Grass Boys, started by Bill Monroe I think. Bluegrass music is often characterized by scruggs style banjo playing, with quick rolls of 3 fingers on the banjo.
      The fellow here is playing a minstrel banjo in old time/clawhammer style. I know less about the others, but I believe this would all still be old time or traditional music, rather than bluegrass.

      Not sure what point you're trying to make here. Fact is, the tin-type image above was made at the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Manassas (aka Bull Run, as I'm sure you know), so the 'battleflag' was eight months away from being distributed to troops of what would eventually become (under Marse Robert) the Army of Northern Virginia. So, I guess 'not displaying the Battle Flag' here is not only 'not unwoke', but not inauthentic. Just sayin'... PS ~ Thanks for the kind word, btw !
