Besides that, I always found strange that the locals just "accepted" the Kid's death, I would imagine that those who loved the kid (and surely He was at Fort Sumner) would chase Garrett over vengeance, but it seems people just carried on with their lives... that seems really strange to me (not to mention that Garret and Billy used to ride together).

I'm not sure if the locals did just accept the fact. It's been reported that most of the locals adored Billy the Kid. If I was one of them and Pat Garrett said he killed the kid when he really didn't, I'd go along with it. Whatever you say, boss. If they spoke up, that would have just caused trouble. If they knew for a fact it wasn't Billy the Kid, then their guy got away. No need to say a word. I read that as time went by, they started talking about in public. Both sides we're playing the game to their advantage.

Look at Brushy Bills wrists in the photo of him standing with the man who believed he was Brushy Bill. It was a known fact that Billy Bonny had very slim wrists. It was said that is how he managed to escape a few times, by slipping the handcuffs off his wrists. Also the way he is standing,is very similar to how he is standing in the tin type photo. Also his ears are the same in both pictures. I always believed he was Billy the kid.

The 2 main things that make me believe completely that Brushy Bill was in fact Billy the kid. 1) There are no death photos of the most notorious outlaw (Billy the Kid) of that time and possibly ever, however he was supposedly killed and buried pretty much immediately. 2) Brushy Bill gained absolutely nothing from reviling that he was Billy kid, nothing. Lincoln Nebraska will forever object to Brushy Bill’s story simply due to tourism.

When it came to the events of the night of July 14, 1881, Brushy said that a man named Billy Barlow was killed by Pat Garrett. Barlow, he said, was partially Mexican, had a beard, looked like the Kid, was a little younger than the Kid, and was possibly related to the Clements family, the cousins of John Wesley Hardin. Brushy also said that he doubted that Billy Barlow was the man's real name. After Barlow was killed, Brushy continued, he fled Fort Sumner. After fleeing Sumner, his story went, he lived in Mexico with a tribe of Yaqui Indians for two years; returned to the U.S. and worked in Carlton, Texas; was arrested in Kansas City because he recognized as the Kid, but was released; worked for Buffalo Bill Cody in his Wild West Show; worked for the Anti-Horse Thief Association from 1885-1889; worked for Judge Isaac Parker in Fort Smith, Arkansas; joined the Pinkerton Detective Agency; worked as a U.S. Marshal investigating train robberies; joined the Rough Riders and went to Cuba; briefly operated his own Wild West Show; fought for Villa and Carranza in the Mexican Revolution; worked as a plainclothes policeman in Gladewater, Texas; married four times; and used a dozen aliases

Did you write that yourself, or did you copy that from someone else? I didn't see a citation at the end. I don't mind if people take excerpts like that from my book, (as long as they credit me), but other authors are more sensitive about people taking such liberties with their work. Also, Roberts was married three times...not four. He was married to Mollie Brown from 1912-1919, to Louticia Ballard from 1925-1944, and to Melinda Allison from 1944 until his death in 1950. A fourth woman often cited as being a former wife of Roberts named Annie wasn't married to Brushy Bill. She was still alive in the early 1980s and was shown pictures of Brushy Bill by researcher Ken Osthimer, and she stated that Brushy Bill wasn't the Oliver Roberts that she was married to. I will cover this in a future video and present all the documents that prove it.

@@brushybret I just remembered what I read from online, so it was just a statement that Brushy Bill was married 4 times. I didn't cite it cause I can't remember which site it was. Now this Annie who was married to Oliver Roberts would've been well over 100 years old if she had been married to the Outlaw Billy the Kid because of the fact that Billy was born in 1859. However, I do believe that Bill Roberts was telling the truth and was in fact the Kid. If we all think about it, it's possible that he lied to his wives and family about his birthdate to keep his identity a secret as he wouldn't want them to be afraid of him

    • @ChiefsNation3peat
      @ChiefsNation3peat 2 года назад +2

@@brushybret Yes I understand that which is why I don't believe that she was married to Brushy Bill. She would've been about 30 years older than Brushy if he was born in 1859 as he claimed. In his interview, he said that he assumed his cousin's identity Oliver Roberts. The other Oliver had a different middle name and he's more than likely the one who was married to Annie. I just have a big feeling that there's some kind of connection between the two. Did you even know that Billy the Kid had a brother? Legend has it that Pat Garrett may have killed Billy Barlow instead of Billy so he was able to sneak out of the night and lived a new life in Hico, Texas. There's even professional photo analysts who claims that Brushy Bill matches with Billy the Kid. I guess my real question is, who was Joe Hines? He obviously knew Billy was living a new life as Brushy Bill. Maybe he's Jesse's brother Frank, or just a close acquaintance of Billy the Kid

The real Bill was around 5'7 or 5'8 think of Tom Cruise "tall" which for the XiX century was more of the average for Caucasians than Today's average which is near 5'10 ft. Consider that American natives were taller and a particular tribe, the Comanche were among the tallest in the planet with an average of 5'11 feet, which is even taller than Today's and closer to the average in modern Denmark.
But given the nourishment, which in critical years of growing the McCarty boys were neglected, orphaned the may have stunted some from the full growth they should have had. However for someone that in his max growth was about 5'8 ft it means he should have lost 2-3 inches of height by his 60's and definitely by his 90's and his height at death should have been 5'6 ft or less. Much noticeable to don't even confuse them just by eyesight and less by standard measurement ....think of Elijah Wood -Frodo or the Harry Potter pixie guy.
This Billy "the Brushed" was not the real Mac

I try and stay open-minded about all things Kid related. With that said, my biggest problem with the Miller claim is that unlike Brushy Bill Roberts, Miller's claim relies almost entirely on statements made by others. While Roberts sat down with William V. Morrison and told his life story, he also kept a journal and collected letters and notarized affidavits to support his claims. Unfortunately, Miller didn't do any of that.

@@michaelwhite3488 Like I said before, I try and stay open-minded to all possibilities. However, we just don't have anything concrete to support Miller's claim. Yes, I've heard about this purported trunk...but no one has been able to verify its existence. It would be awesome if it turned up. As far as Roberts and the Kid's physical similarities, I respectfully disagree that Miller looks more like him. Remember, at least 5 people who knew the Kid from his days in New Mexico stated that Roberts not only looked like Billy but was in fact him (Severo Gallegos, Jose Montoya, Martile Ables, William Campbell, and Jim McDaniels). Also, the Kaya Kobayashi Facial recognition study conducted by the University of Texas-Austin also concluded that Roberts and the Dedrick-Upham Tintype were a statistical match (source The Trial of Billy the Kid by Judge Bob Hefner).

Brushy Bill's transcript of the formerly thought lost audio tapes in a book by W.C. Jameson gives shocking detail about what happened that night. Billy Barlow was a half mexican young man close in age to Billy who was his friend and it is said he could pass for Billy the Kid in a dark environment. I personally believe Brushy told the truth especially since a later found newspaper report about the killing stated that "Billy's" body was disguised to look mexican and had a dark full beard, which so happens it is said that description fits Billy Barlow. Also if Billy the Kid was killed then why were 2 more warrants for his arrest issued, one in 1882 I believe and again in 1885?? Also there was a point years later in another state where Brushy was arrested for being Billy the Kid but his friends got the law to release him by convincing them he was not Billy the Kid at that time. I admit it will probably always be a mystery due to there not being more available evidence so far, but how in the world did Brushy know stuff about Lincoln that most historians didn't even know until many years later? I personally believe Brushy was in fact the real and only Billy the Kid. But that's my opinion based on the research I've been able to do so far.

I investigated this possibility and found it to be highly unlikely. Morrison was a well respected researcher. He worked with several well known historians like Phil Rasch, Charles Sonnichsen, Robert Mullin, E.B. Mann, etc., who all vouched for his credibility. Even those that disagreed with his opinion on Roberts never questioned his integrity. Even Leon Metz, who was Morrison's neighbor, said he believed Morrison really did believe Roberts was the Kid. Some things Roberts told Morrison wasn't known at the time, and some things Roberts said were to the contrary as to what historians believed about Billy at the time...and were later proven correct. I will be discussing this in an upcoming video.

@@brushybret thanks for the reply and thats one of the many questions upon reading the books. another is then why and for what reason would Pat Garret make a book knowing that it was not billy the kid he shot or if he indeed shot anybody that night. Why make a book knowing that the main person is still alive? makes no sense that he makes a book and that Billy might ever come back or anybody seeing him again. Many say they were friends but Billy was in jail for weeks awaiting trail then broke free. If Pat and Billy were tight friends wouldnt Pat release him at that time and not hunt him down. Also why on earth would Billy ever stay at Fort Sumner three months after he escaped. I think anybody who is on the run and hunted for murder would leave the territory. not mention that people knew that Billy ventured there before. I mean its only 139 miles away and still stay there knowing the law is after him. That night makes no sense in Pats Book. 2 deputies out side and billy sees them and well we knowwhat happens next. Why eould anybody on the run be not scared st night especialy seeing people outside petes place that he does not know go in. Anybody would be skeptical and looking over his shoulder all the time. Somthing is fishy in everything here. so many questions here in Pats book seem no to make sense. why would Pat help Billy escape ehrn he did nothing when he was in jail in Lincoln. Why write a book knowing Billy is alive and risk anybody saying Billy is not dead. Why state in the book that Poe states Billy would not go into the room and that oat shot the wrong man. Why state that. Pat did not get the reward money until weeks or months later due to many people did not believe him. Why make a book. Why would Billy stay in a well known area and risk being shot and hunted. Was it because of a woman?????? its puzzleing to think that he would risk getting caught by trackers, the law, army, Pat and others. I get that Brushy stated things not yet known by historians. Just that some of the things in Morisons Book and Edwards book about Billy has some things almost exactly like first hand account...example is in the books mentions Billy writing to the governer and looking at the actual letters well the wording was kind of an exact match in sense. I mean for being that old how would Brushy remember what he exactly wrote to the governer. Is there any way that Brushy have access to Billies letters and tell Morrison about them in detail. Could Brushy read books anf then tell Morrison. also about Billies prominent front teeth. Brushy doesnt seem to have that problem. Most of the time the prominent front teeth make for a real issue over the years. Thanks

I believe the effects of the Horrell War, which preceded the Lincoln County War, cannot be overstated when considering the distrust amongst the Hispanic community at the time of the shooting.

The Morrison book which I often reference in my book, The Real Billy the Kid AKA Brushy Bill Roberts as well as my RUclips videos, is the book that got me into the whole Brushy Bill - Billy the Kid debate. At one time I was a hard core supporter of maintaining the historical status quo but once I started looking into the Roberts case and started collecting Morrison's papers the more I began to realize all the supposed evidence against Roberts couldn't stand up to even the slightest scrutiny, and it seemed the old man might actually have been telling the truth. Alias Billy the Kid is an awesome book and I highly recommend it. W.C. Jameson's books, The Return of The Outlaw Billy the Kid or Billy the Kid Beyond the Grave are also excellent. If you can find them Judge Bob Hefner's The Trial of Billy The Kid is a great read as well (Note: it was the first to publish the UT-Austin Study results). Also, Dr. Jannay Valdez and Bob Hefner's Billy the Kid: Killed In New Mexico - Died In Texas contains a lot of documents and details vital to Roberts' claim. Dr. William A. Tunstill's Billy the Kid And Me Were The Same is very difficult to find and focuses mainly on Roberts genealogy. Before Dr. Tunstill passed away he gave me his papers and videos and I will be including them in future videos.

The 1879 birth has been completely debunked. We have proof that Roberts worked in the mid 1880s to mid 1890s. We have records that he worked for the Anti-Horse-Thief- Association and at Ft. Smith Arkansas this is verified by the following: James R. Smith, Chief Deputy Marshal, Western District of Arkansas, Fort Smith Arkansas letter dated April 23, 1981, to Dr. William A. Tunstill and Jo Ann Kryal, Fort Smith National Historic Site letter dated March 14, 1983, to Dr. William A. Tunstill. Letter dated May 13, 1951, from Hodge Bailey, Secretary of The Anti-Thief- Association to William V. Morrison and letter dated May 14, 1951, from James Westfahl, Secretary of The Anti-Thief-Association, West Oklahoma Division to William V. Morrison. Also, in an interview dated November 30, 1949, from Jim Copeland of the Pinkerton Detective Agency to William V. Morrison, Copeland says that he worked with Roberts in 1888 to 1889 tracking horse thieves along the Red River from Texas to the Indian Territory (Oklahoma). These are just a few, and will include several others in my upcoming video debunking the 1879 birth claim. As far as his family not believing him goes, I have affidavits from more than 10 relatives of Brushy Bill that state they believe him to be Billy the Kid. How else is one to arrive at the proper conclusion without examining all the available evidence? Everything you stated about Roberts is patently false. In my video on physical similarities, I go over every single one of your claims. Once again, you make a lot of claims but fail to cite a specific source. With regard to Roberts' height, you've demonstrated absolutely no evidence to support your claim that he was taller than 5'8' other than your own baseless opinion. Do you think his doctor and the caretaker were lying when they stated his height to Dr. Tunstill? With regard to his hands and wrists this is discussed in Alias Billy the Kid by Morrison and Sonnichsen and Roberts was even able to demonstrate how he was able to free himself from handcuffs...because he had small hands and large wrists...just like Billy the Kid. I can believe Billy was not killed by Garret, but I do not believe Brushy Bill was the kid - it’s taken me a lot of research to make that statement

I,personally dont know if brushy bill was BTK but i think there should be DNA done...im sure it cant be done against him and his family members who are still alive..im sure the roberts family would do it for there are many of them who say brushy had mental issues and was not Billy the kid

    • @brushybret

We actually tried to do DNA testing a few years ago. The plan was to exhume Brushy Bill, Catherine Antrim, and the body buried in Ft. Sumner. However, we were fought every step of the way by the powers that be...this is well documented and is detailed in Steve Sederwall's book, the Dirty on Billy the Kid. With regard to Brushy's relatives thinking he was crazy, that really isn't true. I have affidavits signed by about a dozen relatives who believe he was the real Billy the Kid. Only a vocal minority think otherwise. And keep in mind, we're talking about 2 very distant cousins here, one of which never met him and the other was a small child when Roberts died.
