I think people don't understand that Ferdinand is actually along with Rozemyne the protagonist in the story. His life was just too hard. I am in awe that he conserved his humanity, and managed to excel so much despite all he went through. His kindness (although hidden) is also understated.
If only we had Hannelore's Fifth Year in Rozemyne's POV, we could see many glimpses of his past since Rozemyne is on mission to 're-tying Ferdinand's thread of life'.
Ferdinand is more considerate and kind than most may think despite his tragic past. The moment Myne showed she had mana he could have enslaved her as that would be what most nobles would do. But he chose to take care of her and that changed his whole life for the better. Not only his life changed but the duchy and Kingdom also changed simply because he chose to take care of Myne instead of enslaving her to death like most nobles would.
if you intrested im gonna drop Ferdinand (High Priest) backstory, Novel spoiler alert Ferdinand was born in the main kingdom (the place when the king stay), he was bastard child from Noble who "doing that" with one of woman in prostitute, this prostitute is a producer of magic stone some stuff, so child who born in this prostitute must death to become magic stone (fyi: if noble or some one who have magic power (like myne) when they're death they become magic stone), Ferdinand true name is Quinta (meaning five), they tag child born there with that name, but Sylvester Father (i forgot the name) or Aub Ehrenfest (the place main story take place) adopted Ferdinand and claim that Ferdinand is his son from woman from temple (in this anime/novel temple is place to prostitute too) and because of that Sylvester mom really hate Ferdinand in any way, she trying all she can to kill Ferdinand, Ferdinand doesn't have anyone except his Adoption Father and Sylvester, but even them can't stand for Ferdinand if he abused because of some nobility terms some sort, even Ferdinand food was always poisened, but that change after Ferdinand have Justus and Eckhart who can protect him, Ferdinand in academy always have a perfect score, and that doesn't make his step mom happy, she abuse him even more, but then Sylvester send Ferdinand to temple for Run from his mother, and there we go Ferdinand in temple now btw because of this when his adopted father (syvester father) died he can't attend as his Family, he just attend as priest. This is explained Ferdinand love for Rozemyne, Rozemyne doesn't care anything about Ferdinand backstory or his weakness, she love him as family anyway
Spoiler . . . . Minor correction, Ferdinand's mother is a Lanzenavian princess who lived on the Royal Academy grounds in the Adalgisa villa. Her role was that of a broodmare, to produce high born nobles with mana. The girls that were born were taken back to Lanzenave to be wed to nobles there, while a single male heir would obtain his schtape and be sent to Lanzenave to become the next defacto ruler there since none of their nobles were able to sustain the infrastructure created by the first Lanzenavian king. The fate of all other males was death (when those with mana die, it hardens at the moment of death, becoming a faystone), which was why they received numbers for names since they weren't even viewed as people; that is, unless someone in Yurgenschmit claimed the child before their baptism.

As of this post, we are on the final book in the series, the last coming out in September. This would be part 5 vol 12. There is, however, a legit spin-off series in publication that resumes the story from a side characters perspective instead of Rozemyne's.
His backstory? Its not showed full even ini novel, Justus and Richarda just sometime mention what about his past life, and Ferdinand told Rozemyne that before he adopted his life is just to become mana stone
