Thanks Samuel for sharing about Caran d'Ache. I own a ball pen of this brand. I bought it way back in 2006 or 2005. I wonder why they don't make oversized pens which can match Namiki Yukari Royale and Sailor King of Pen.
I was lucky enough to pick up a Chinese Lacquer Varius fountain pen a few years ago. I also have a Grand Bleu Leman FP (one of my favourite pens), one of the older model Leman FP in the black, an Ecridor FP, and a BP/Pencil in the Leman Grand Bleu and black respectively. Fantastic brand on par with Montblanc and GvFC
I have never heard of them before my brother recommended them to me. Managed to nab an Ecridor Avenue fountain pen for £108 on Amazon UK of all places. I thought the pricing was a mistake, but it was fulfilled. I was so very lucky. The pen is my favourite.
For me Caran d'Ache is part of my personal heritage as well. I have several 3 tier wooden boxes of their coloured pencils which are an artist's dream. And as a student I used the royal blue metal ball point pen for jotting notes only for my favourite class. The ritual has remained with me to this day the only difference being that I now use only high end fountain pens for all note taking.
I bought some years ago the amazing 849. It can the cheapest Caran d’ache pen, but it is an amazing product. After a couple of years, the nib was not working correctly, like the ink getting dry inside the feed. (I was using Caran d’ache ink) I was now living in a different country where I bought my pen, so I was afraid about the coverage of the warranty. I wrote to Caran d’Ache costumer service and in less than one week I received a brand new nib. The best costumer service ever. They even send a nice note apologising for the inconvenience and hoping the new one works correctly.
Thank you for a good overview. It is my favourite brand, and I have used its products for 50 years! Top quality at every price point. You make a very good point about the company being family owned, as this always determines the quality of the after-sales' service. It is no coincidence that the best companies for after-sales' service are Caran d'Ache, Lamy and Faber-Castell, all of which are family owned. The worst is Montblanc, part of the Richemont group, who could not care less, and make life as hard as possible.
Not yet! This pen newbie wants to add one to collection. But we do not have a pen store to see one in person here in the city. I like saying the name…very fancy! Watching Sam’s videos makes me want to buy a pen each week because he explains the pens so well.
I purchased a "La Modernista" and was impressed by the quality of enameling and generous use of silver both in the pen and crystal inkwell. It was one of those "over-the-top" pens that isn't really something that I would carry around in my pocket for everyday use LOL! As a fan of Gaudi I impulse-bought this one as I was awe-struck by its design and instantly recalled my visit to the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona! Heavily infused with whimsical sea imagery and colors, I am transported to the Isle of Calypso every time I gaze on this pen. CdA isn't afraid to go way beyond the conventional and coupled with Swiss attention to detail it is a winner!
I came into possession of their gilded Ecridor chevron pen through sheer luck and their name was completely new to me but I have loved the pen and this video was really helpful on helping me decide if I should invest in one of their fountain pens, its beautiful work.
I have the 80 crayon set of Neocolor I and Neocolor II crayons in a wood box waiting for my daughter when she is old enough. I bought my wife the Alpine Blue Leman, and what really impressed me is the lacquer is completely unphased by her just throwing it in her purse with keys etc. I had bought myself a Klein Blue Leman, but decided upon seeing it that it wasn't my style, sold it, and bought a Bleu Marin, which is really impressive. It's amazing how well done and consistent the lacquer is when I look at it in under 20x magnification. There's no way this was done by hand, is there?
Thanks for sharing. Glad to know you and your wife both are Caran d’Ache Owners. No the Leman is not done by hand, the China Laquering on Limited Editions and the Varius are done by hand. Hope that wasn’t confusing in the video 🙏🏼
@@SamuelNaldi I purchased Léman Rollerball Pen in Bleu Marin (featured in your video). Interestingly enough, Caran d'Ache actually makes pens for Patek Philippe.
@@SamuelNaldi It would be an interesting video pairing watch brands with pen brands ;) I enjoy your videos and instagram, its very hard to resist all the beautiful pens you present
I have a Ecridor Caran D'ache Fountainpen and find it a perfect example of hyped garbage... it does not write well - ink flow halts after a few seconds once you stop writing, and recently the collar that retains the hood, did disappear... now the hood falls off when i hold the pen vertical...all quit disappointing & certainly not worth its money.
@@SamuelNaldi For the first one I was thinking there was a problem with the one I own but the others were the same. Goliath Refill is not really a Goliath. Much more cheaper (1/3 th the price) Faber Castells, Parker Jotters or Uni-Ball Jetstreams flows and writes very fluently on the paper and much more joy to write. Carandache is a total disappointment for me.
Who owns a Caran d’Ache?

Beautiful 😍
I picked up their Platinum-Coated ECRIDOR™ GOLF Ballpoint Pen, it is a great pen.

you just made me buy one, lol. In your opinion, what's the Patek of European pen industry?
Haha, happy to hear. Which one did you get?
Difficult to say to be honest… i think we’ll still have to find out who will develop towards that segment.

ı bought and tried 3 different 849 ballpoints. Returned all of them. A lot of skipping during writing.
