  • We remember the legendary historian, author, professor, playwright and activist Howard Zinn, who was born 100 years ago today. Zinn was a regular guest on Democracy Now! from the start of the program in 1996 up until his death in 2010 at age 87. After witnessing the horrors of World War II as a bombardier, Zinn became a peace and justice activist who picketed with his students at Spelman College during the civil rights movement and joined in actions such as opposing the Vietnam War. He later spoke out against the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. "I believe neutrality is impossible, because the world is already moving in certain directions. Wars are going on. Children are starving," Zinn said in a 2005 interview. "To be neutral … is to collaborate with whatever is going on, to allow it to happen." His classic book, "A People's History of the United States," retells the country's history from the perspective of everyday people who resisted oppression and exploitation by more powerful forces.

even lefty historians think Zinn is a liar
Zinn’s sympathetic biographer, the leftist historian Martin Duberman, noted that “Howard’s version of our past has been justly criticized as leaving out too much, of presenting a partial and thereby distorted account.” A good starting point, Duberman suggested, is the book’s treatment of Abraham Lincoln. Zinn presented “a one-dimensional view of a complex, cautious man,” he said, ignoring “the fact that unlike most people, Lincoln’s capacity for growth was impressive,” that he “stood at a substantial distance from the outright racism that dominated Northern opinion,” and that Lincoln “was in a decided minority in believing that natural rights belonged to all human beings.” Duberman concluded that Zinn’s “disparagement of Lincoln is part of a general problem with the way he assigns motivation to individuals. With few exceptions, only members of the working class or minorities (or their champions) are allowed to represent human nobility and selflessness.”

“To kill and kill and kill”
Israel’s view is that if it ever stops killing Palestinians it will cease to exist. This is because it is engaged in a demographic war to maintain a regime founded on ethno-racial dominance.
As Israeli government adviser Arnon Sofer put it a year before Israel’s 2005 withdrawal of its soldiers and settlers from the interior of the Gaza Strip, “If we want to remain alive, we will have to kill and kill and kill. All day, every day.”
“If we don’t kill, we will cease to exist,” Sofer said. “The only thing that concerns me is how to ensure that the boys and men who are going to have to do the killing will be able to return home to their families and be normal human beings.”
As the traumatized survivors of Israel’s successive assaults on Gaza can attest, Sofer meant what he said.

even lefty historians think Zinn is a liar

No he didn't. Zinn is a liar and a communist propagandist. I have read his books and traced his sources. He is a flat out liar. Where he doesn't lie he omits chunks of verifiable historical facts, where he doesn't omit he intentionally distorts. He takes one sentence from one page of Columbus diary and puts it with another as if it was said together. He also uses the letter from Michel de Cuerno that most historians don't use because it has claims in it that are verifiably false. But not Zinn. Zinn takes parts of a fake letter that he thinks he can use to advance white man bad America bad blah blah blah blah blah. You fell for the lies.

Do you teach them that Commanche means one who fights with everyone? Or that if by an unfortunate circumstance you survived a raid the Commanche were masters of torture and would bury their captives up to their heads cut their eyelids off so the sun would burn their eyes out while they starved to death?

even lefty historians think Zinn is a liar

Thank you ever so much for this interview with Mr. Howard Zinn.
Listening to him came importantly close to -breaking my heart- coming alongside him, -listening- through the many burdens he had the integrity & courage to bear & carry. I claim "close" because I did not have the opportunity to actually --walk-- alongside him over the many terrains of pain, anguish, destructions & despair... The dark fruit of ...human against human...borne of the precept: "They" are different from -- "Me"--...& --"I" am the --"Good Guy!".
He is a man of a beautiful soul. To me, he is, humbly, an honorable example of the discerning standard for 'the measure of a man' (found in Proverbs 28:1)...:
    " The wicked flee when no man pursues;
BUT...the righteous are bold as a lion."

"The government is being treasonous, and the government is being unpatriotic when the government violates the fundamental rights of human beings."
"If you define patriotism as obedience to the government, then _you are, I think, following a kind of totalitarian principle._ You do what the government tells you to do." (Like you are taught to do in fundamental religious houses of worship.)
_"Democracy means that the government is an instrument of the people_ in order to preserve the equal rights to life, and liberty to the people. And when the government violates those rights it is the duty of the people to defy that government."
    Powerful words.
