In the book Kitty is scared because she knows whats comming and confused because she loves Levin but at the same time she is influenced by her mom that Vronsky is better choice. She has not rejected him first time that easely

I think she was conflicted at rejecting him and that was perfectly captured by the actress. She didn't really say no she gave an ambiguous answer. And you could still see her conflict as Levin was essentially running away.

Honestly, I get the impression Tolstoy was actually very sensitive about the female puzzlingness with their role in society. They were so young, and juvenile, while about to embark into something they only have a vague idea about - sex, establishing a home, bonding with her husband in whatever way accessible, managing a household, pregnancy, giving birth, raising children, being a nurse basically, and more. As he wrote, a man just visits their house for a few weeks, until a proposal is the only proper action for him to take, and with all those considerations in her mind, the young woman has only two options - "yes", or "no".

Well, it’s more than just Kitty being influenced by her mother. Vronsky had a popular status in their society and was young and attractive, which Kitty liked. Her mother had an influence, but Kitty enjoyed being in the presence of Vronsky. Another important thing to consider is the fact that Levin had disappeared for a time to build his life out in the country, aspiring to be an agriculturist. Because of this, Levin had made an impression that insinuated a blasé attitude towards Kitty.

The concept is difficult to catch but, when you understand it, well it´s beautiful.

I have read the book...many times. It is one of my favorite books, after Persuasion by Jane Austin...But Constantin Demitrievich Levin is my favorite character of all time. The best I have ever seen him portrayed is the BBC version of Anna Karenina.

Yes, he was aware that she only married him because Vronski didn't want her, so she settled for Ljevin. I must say that the most stoic character is Tatjana Larrina, Evgenije Onjegin.

In Anna Karenina, love is depicted by comparisons. We see two romances side by side, but completely different in mood and texture. There is the story of young Levin, who is in many ways a hopeless romantic, deeply in love with Katerina (Kitty) Shcherbatsky, a young debutante preparing to make her entrance into Russian society. At first she spurns him, having committed her affections to the dashing Count Vronsky, a Prince Charming-esque character in almost every regard except for one: his unbridled taste for the fairer sex. In more modern terms, he’s basically a man-whore, casting his affections at the drop of a hat. Kitty falls prey to his debonair charm, and expects to receive an offer of marriage. But, at a ball, things go horribly wrong as another woman becomes the object of Vronsky’s affection: the mysterious Anna Karenina.
Vronsky flees from Kitty, romancing Anna. This causes a rift between her and her husband, Alexei. At first he needlessly clings to his wife for the sake of honor alone, but eventually relinquishes her. Anna, still married by contract, now becomes scandalized for her affair with the count. They plunge into passion together, and the affair results in a pregnancy, further ostracizing her from society.
Meanwhile, both Levin and Kitty, heartbroken, begin to build their lives apart from each other, finding purpose in the absence of romance. Later they come together, in renewed spirits, and begin to forge a relationship.
Love blossoms very slowly between Levin and Kitty. With Vronsky and Anna it ignites with passion. Rather than an act of time and patience, love is a selfish matter. Both Anna and Vronsky turn away from their prior obligations: one of marriage, the other of a marriage-to-be. In the case of Anna and Vronsky, love requires abandonment. Alexei Karenin is stripped of a wife, and Kitty is stripped of a suitor.
On the contrast, love is a patient affair with Kitty and Levin. It does not spring from sexual passion; it nurtures like a child. Far from perfect, we see the growing pains of Levin and Kitty’s relationship, even in marriage. There are doubts, there are quarrels, even moments of jealousy. But what Tolstoy is trying to show is that no romance is ever perfect. Even the best and most honest relationships come with blemishes. But these are only natural. And, unlike Anna and Vronsky, they sow maturity and patience, rather than discord.
Anna is a very selfish woman, always prizing her own needs over everyone else’s. She chides Vronsky for any time he spends away from her, but not in the same way as Kitty. Anna uses every instance of quarrel as leverage against Count Vronsky, trying to guilt-trip him into sympathy. She sees him in shades of black and white, rather than gray: he is her greatest love, but also her greatest enemy. In the end, her despair takes hold of her and she takes her life just to revenge herself on him one last time.
Anna thinks only of how things will affect herself, being scandalized. She does believe she has acted in error, but only considers the consequences of the act on her reputation, rather than anyone else’s. She uses it as excuse to bury herself deeper under self-loathing and self-pity.
Vronsky is also a selfish person. His biggest struggle is between trying to choose to commit to one woman whose reputation he has already helped to soil and wanting to live in his decadent, womanizing ways. Levin is far from a womanizer, but he is once tempted by the lure of selfish, masculine independence when he gets a taste of the Moscow city life. The difference is, he chooses commitment over self-interest. He chooses it willing and happily, while Vronsky still clings to Anna out of obligation.
Vronsky and Anna’s relationship is also one defined by excess and gratification. They travel the world, meeting artists and visiting exotic locations. When the throes of passion subside, they try to fill the void with opulence. Luxury abounds, from commissioning a painting of Anna from a famous artist, to lavish vacations and sumptuous feasts and parties. They try to make themselves fashionable to the upper rung of society, while Levin and Kitty are much more content to live a simple, pastoral life. Their romance is simply a show for the world, rather than an honest profession of love. It is a passion that kindles quickly and then clings desperately as its fire dies out. It is merely a trimming that hides its true nature.
Because passion kindles so quick and selfishly it also dies quick and selfishly. There is no room for the growth that we see in Levin and Kitty’s relationship, even though both experience similar things. At one point Levin becomes jealous of Kitty’s attention towards another man and even starts to accuse her, much like Anna accuses Vronsky. Jealousy is never the sole indication of a bad relationship, but unchecked it can sow the seeds for one. However love is patient, rather than quick-spirited, with Levin and Kitty. They argue like any other couple, but are willing to mend their quarrels, rather than let them fester over time. The blemishes, present in any normal relationship, are front and center in Levin and Kitty’s marriage: they are not hidden beneath a tapestry. In their case it takes seeing over the faults of each other, rather than trying to romanticize them.
Lastly, Kitty and Levin are given time to grow in themselves, before entering into a relationship. They learn the value of self-giving. Levin commits himself to his labor and Kitty commits herself to the service of others. Rather than causing a rift between them, this value of self-giving allows them to learn from each other. Kitty, though at times distraught by Levin’s commitment to his craft, comes to respect his integrity. Levin, though baffled at times by Kitty’s selfless attitude towards others, comes to adapt this to his own values. Tolstoy shows that the best loves are ones that can learn from experience. A husband is not “complete” in marriage without the values of his wife, and a wife is not complete without the values of her husband. Two competitors, such as Vronsky and Anna, will only divide a relationship, rather than compliment it. Love must not be swift and selfish; it must have a tender, patient hand. This does not and will never mean perfection, but it does imply a willingness to grow through challenges and obstacles.
Levin and Kitty have a natural relationship, rather than one that is persistently dysfunctional. Anna and Vronsky have a doomed relationship because it is only predicated on passion. It is one of vanity that cannot grow into anything more. Passion is a temporary thing: without the underpinnings of care and commitment, it cannot stay afloat.

      @@cosette2410 Well said.
An intricate parable by a talented wordsmith.
The struggle to find True Selfless Love marches on through incorporeal and noetic toil and yet all must bow with a humble spirit and a broken heart.
Karenin, ".. the happiness of forgiveness has revealed to me my duty. I forgive completely"...mighty words demand mighty deeds. Therefore both heaven and earth must curse him.
Levin's passion/love eventually arrives at Faith through the struggle of humbleness and by accepting one little miracle at a time.
.."now he felt unhappy because she loved him too much!”...
Vronsky's passion was only for himself; he fights so vehemently against both the ugliness of complacency and the beauty of faith, that only suicide can release him and Hades accept him.
      “I'm afraid I'm becoming ridiculous.”
The common human desires of the indifferent aristocrats (even for millennia) tinker with the little rules (lies) of their polite society. Fittingly a big lie approaches. “I’d call on her if she’d only broken the law,” proclaims a countess, “but she broke the rules!"
There is no individuality in such a handful of sins.
Devotion is distinct in every way.
“What a strange illusion it is to suppose that beauty is goodness.”..

I don't understand all the complaints... why doesn't anybody like creativity anymore? Why on earth would you want to watch a movie that's exactly word for word the longest book known to man? I personally enjoyed the creative liberties that Joe Wright took. Is it the same as the book? No, but that doesn't mean it wasn't good or interesting. If you want something more true to the novel, go watch a different adaptation but if you want something interesting, unusual, creative... then you've found it. The use of the old theatre, the way he handled the set changes as though it were a play instead of a film, the expert blending of eras to help convey the romance and drama of the story... I'm sorry, I just don't understand whats not to like.

I liked the movie, but its not a fluffy love story. This movie is better than much of the dribble out there and by the looks of the comments, this film has attracted people to read the book, so that's great. To say it did not follow the book is true in many ways. I suppose the absolute problem is the depth of the book and precision of each character.
I imagined it was a story about a similar Anna :-) and it was fine.
“Anna Karenina” isn’t actually a love story. Its kind of a harrowing warning against the "cult of love" that polite society invents to insulate itself from the consequence and responsibility of deeper feelings...and then hypocritically cast stones at others to avoid or diminish personal scrutiny at every opportunity. Maybe a character study on Anna, following her closely, on the the roller coaster ride to destruction....the ridiculous desperate nature and absurd fleeting devotion of passion?

I must say that this was my first Anna Karenina movie and I found it quite interesting, at least in the way they chose to show the story, as a theatre play. It is kinda boring tho, but since I loved so much Levin and Kitty plot I did some research, found out they have a bigger role in the book, and I read it. It is now one of my favourite books and I guess I can't hate this movie nor its Levin and Kitty, since they were the reason I ended up reading the book.
That being said, I've watched almost every other adaptation after that and, as sad as it is, this is one of the few that actually portrait Levin and Kitty "properly", and I mean that most of the times they cut them even more, or they don't appear at all. The two adaptations I found the most loyal to the book were the russian version from 1967 and the BBC mini series from 1978, but they are long as fuck and haven't aged that well, so if you have to watch an AK movie and only have a couple of hours, this one is not thaaaat bad.

    • @cr1197
      @cr1197 Год назад

Yeah, the adaptations I've seen seem to miss the point of the Levin & Kitty side. The novel is called Anna Karenina so most (understandably) think the story is about her, but it's just as much about Levin. How the two are so alike, but the crucial differences in situation and thought; the differences that provide one happiness and destroy the other. The contrast of their lives & loves and the symmetry within them is crucial.

Of course, the movies are not comparable with the books but they should not affect the people's imagination wrongly. Of course, each human being see the world from different aspects and has unique imagination but for me Domhnall Gleeson is a wrong choice for being Levin. -restlessness, anger and sadness of Levin,
-indecisiveness, confusion and sadness in Kitty
    -talkativeness, sociability, gentleness of Vronsky
    - Levin staying just to know Vronsky better even when he's just been rejected by kitty. Here, we all come across Levin's rational thinking which was stark opp. to that of Vronsky's

Clip „Dance Me To The End Of Love - Russell Sprout & Tracy H.“ real Satan's Ball in Petersberg near Königswinter в 1840 году.
Клип «Keira Knightley’s Meltdown at the Horse Races».

They are not princes or princesses in the sense of children of the tsar. It's the highest title of nobility below the emperor and existed in many countries. Unfortunately the official English translation of the title as "prince(ss)" is kinda misleading

What a plain dress she's wearing, it doesn't even look like a proper 1870s dress. All the women seriously need tighter corsets. Kitty's dresses in the 1997 adaptation were far more stunning.
