    Catnip is coming in like crazy so now is the time to harvest it and dry it. In this video I show how I use the sun to dry the catnip that I harvest and how I process it for storage for my cats:)

    You should harvest just after your plants flower and as they are about to go to seed. There will be way more oils and good stuff in your plant. Plus the flowers are the cats favorite part and most potent.

    FINALLY! I seriously just wasted almost 30 minutes watching 6 other videos before yours on how to harvest and dry catnip so I could learn how to dry it in a way that wouldn't require either a dark, warm, undisturbed room for a couple months, OR a dehydrator! I don't have a dehydrator, a space like that in my house, OR the patience of having to wait months for it all to dry! Your video was the only one I found that showed me how to use the sun (duh...why didn't I think of that?!?), AND you also showed us what it looked like AFTER it was dried out, as well as a couple of good tips on pruning. TWO THUMBS UP from me, so THANKS! 👍👍😊

      My dad grow humanip and yeah at harvest he hangs it but eventually he cant wait and microwaves it with what I'd guess yields a 10-15% potency loss 20% at most extreme circumstances

    I drink the tea with Honey after boiling several leaves. Great for the complexion. A lot of Appalachians use the tea for babies that have bumps on their face. Most of the time we just buy it.

      I grow catnip it does not look like that tan color, what happen.. it was dried in the sun 😩 the plant has already been cut ✂️ should be hung or flat dried in a dry airy dark place not in the sun it will destroy it medicinal properties. From what I read in several herbal 📚 books since the late 60'.

    • @luminosetea

      It’s best if you add some sand in the soil because catnip likes dryer, better draining soil. But just normal compost is fine as well. It worked for me, at least :)

    Very interesting video, and will be very helpful for me in the near future! I'm growing my own catnip, I'm only sown the seeds two days ago. The weather hasn't been very good so far sadly, so I hope they pull through, survive and grow. I'm also growing cat grass, and they've started to grow. I grow both my catnip and cat grass indoors, and I'm growing the catnip because I'm want to try catnip tea, because I've heard catnip is a powerful repellant against mosquitos, and also because I love cats. Just one question I want to ask, but does artificial light count as sunlight for the catnip, I mean an ordinary light.. Because it hasn't been very sunny and I would be really happy for my first catnip seeds to grow successfully. Thanks for posting this video and I will follow the advice it offers. :)

    • @homefarmideas

      +Majestic Mutt, thanks for watching and the support:) Well, if you use artificial light you will need lights that act like natural light.

    • @homefarmideas
      @homefarmideas  Год назад +2

      Catnip is generally more effective on cats when it is dried. The drying process helps concentrate the chemical compound called nepetalactone, which is responsible for triggering the characteristic response in cats. When catnip is dried, the concentration of nepetalactone increases, enhancing its potency. Fresh catnip can also elicit a response in some cats, but it tends to be less intense compared to dried catnip. However, it's important to note that each cat's sensitivity and preference can vary, so some cats may still enjoy fresh catnip more. Ultimately, observing your cat's reaction can help determine which form of catnip they prefer. So I would say try both😊 it will also grow fairly easy in pots. Just make sure that it is trimmed and does not get too tall. As it grows if you trim it, it will get bushy instead of lengthy.
