I bought an FG 180 back in '66 or '67. It's still a great guitar. I hadn't played it in a while, so I got it out the other day. Except for a minor truss rod adjustment to bring the action down, it was ready to go. These really are fine guitars for the money. I know I played it a lot back in the day--some wear on the fretboard bears witness to that. Too bad some of the other stuff I've bought didn't hold value like this one did.
Goddamn, gorgeous sound and wonderful playing man! So glad I found this video. A good friend of mine is lending me his FG180 to learn and I'm so bloody stoked.
I had 2 of them 125 bucks, most playable guitar with rewarding tonal excellence and balance, a natural for me just as I was developing skills, still miss them.
If you're still paying attention to this video, I wonder what strings you're using here? I have an old FG-180 I picked up in absolutely showroom new condition, perfect finish, etc. I love the sound you're getting here, and would like to try and approximate it.
FG180 was produced from the 60s to the early 70s, and the 180J model was produced after that. It is not clear that the 180J model is made in Japan, but the 180 is made in Japan as I know.
Freaking incredible med range n punchy bass. I just got a fg335. Old old. Repaired cracked neck. Put tusq nut, unbleached bone saddle n bridge pins n it sounds n plays great. I set the string height. Its amazing how percussive the bass is. Love playing it with its 1 3/4 inch nut width. Lol.
Sounds like a dam Martin, without the growl. What a great sound
This fellow plays with a wonderful musical sensibility. Top notch.

great medley. Found this while looking to buy this guitar. Elliott Smith
Same here. Did you end up finding yourself one?
Same. I just found one for 550$
For Elliott sound, use phosphor bronze strings and struming with your thumb (down) and index (up), without nails
I want one of these. Elliott Smith had one
Sounds great. Have had (made in Japan) since 1971; still sounds great.

Got same guitar for 120 US dollars from an online seller. Can’t wait to play it, soon.

Do you know the difference between FG180 and FG180J? Is the J made in Japan and the 180 made in Taiwan or something? Thanks.
