There’s something really special about these old Yamahas. They age like wine with a beautiful and soulful sound that can’t be replicated or bought new off a store shelf. I recently bought a 1973 Yamaha FG-160 and I’ve never heard anything like it. The resonance and tone are so unique and alive. It responds to the slightest touch and roars loud and clear on a hard strum. I bought it cheap looking to resell it for a profit but fell in love with it and now it’s my favorite of all my acoustics.
Somewhere around 3:45 he begins "My Grandfather's Clock." What a memory, maybe because I have so many memories of my granddad. Oh, and I still have my 1970s FG180 and still love it.
This superb guitarist is among the best to be found here...The old laminate 180 has a warm sound...but the newer solid wood one really has more beauty in the details imho.
50th, hands down. It's obvious to see why the 180 is a cult classic and I get the nostalgia but the 50th just sounds better across the board. More complex and articulate, great guitar.
one sounds new, one sounds vintage, and I, too, am getting one of the 180 for the US for the new one. My first Yammy acoustic, and can't wait. thanks for posting!
Very different but IMO the new one is a much better instrument. The note body is fuller on the bass and lower registers. I don't think it's brighter like some have suggested, it's more of a stronger piano like sound. Much better note separation as well. The old one is also nice, but a different beast. Much more mellow and intimate instrument. A bit scooped on the mid range. Great guitar no less.
And yet, some people say they don't understand why Yamaha guitars are in such demand, especially the MIJ ones. I have found that the early Taiwanese made Yamahas are almost as good. I have a six-string dreadnought and a 12 string dreadnought, both made in Taiwan, and they are exceptional.
I’m a big fan of Yamaha guitars. I bought a FG-730s new, 7 years ago because I was so impressed with the build quality and sound but recently bought a 1973 FG-160 and it blows it away in tone and feel. It’s better than any expensive acoustic I’ve ever played or owned. Including those costing much more. The sound of 49 years of aged wood is truly inspiring.
Even with the older strings, the vintage to my ears has a more appealing ring and warmer tone, plus the fret markers are much less in your face, which gives it a better overall look. I've come across a few of these beauties, and they, along with the 140 are by far my favorite closet finds in the yamaha line = ]
Amazing player...... amazing guitars. I like both sounds. But to be honest..... the old versions are more "life" like. Something like they can tell some storys from the past. Instruments with history...... they want tell us. I don't know..... great instruments.
If guitars could talk... My ex (yeh!) used to say: "You bought another guitar?" "You already have guitars!" "You don't need another guitar!" My response: "Guitars make music, and they're much cheaper than psychologists". "When I get done playing any of my guitars, I don't hear: 'Hmm... Sounds like denial. Why don't you see me again next week, so WE can discuss that, shall WE?'
Isn’t the original laminated wood? At least the sides anyway. Given Yamahas construction experience the new one will stomp all over the vintage, especially when it’s played in more.
I am in the beginnings of my guitar journey, but here are some of my observations. Yamaha has it's own sound and both sounded great. The 50th anniversary sounded a little deeper though, which could be several things. One thing for sure though is that Yamaha builds really good guitars at a great price point. I didn't initially realize it, but the strings and gage size matter also, depending on the sound you want. So to get down to specifics; I have a FGX5 and like the D'Addario SX, 11's. I like the deeper tone they bring with a decent life span. My search for a compatible sing for my guitar isn't over, but I'm not looking so hard anymore.
My 1st guitar about 45 years ago. An easy player and affordable. Apart from the horrible scratch-plate and nasty head stock (both of which are cosmetic), the intonation never let me down once I figured out what that was...was great out of the box. I did have some help getting it though (get a guy who knows, really knows how to play, it'll save some heartache). I got a Takamine about 35 years ago but I still think of Yammie. My younger ears might anyway!
Huge difference. The lows on the vintage are huge in a good way, the guitar sounds more resonant. The newer one is more balanced and has a more modern voicing.
I hobby build now (not acoustics at this point), but I remember a pro builder (custom guy) giving me some static on the phone once when I said I had a D28 martin that just was very closed and weak and that I was waiting for it to open. He said "a good guitar is open when it's made and it will just open more. That's a line that production guitar companies give buyers to keep them from sending back the bad ones. He was right. I ordered a guitar from him and then bourgeois and they were open right away. The old guitar here is open. I don't know if the new one will ever match it. If they were even in price (don't know if they're close), I would buy the guitar that is open now as long as it's straight and it intonates.
@Penumbra Great guitar. £70 new.. Still original parts. No repairs. Needs some attention to frets. First 5 worn down + fretboard has worn down in places.I can understand why they have a fan club. To get a guitar in UK that is comparable = £600 +..I shall spend money on repairs (expensive) when finances improve..Good to hear from you. Cheers.
Maybe it came like that. I personally don't like any branding on things I own. I think things look better without company logos plastered all over them
I doubt he did that. I've met owners who have a problem with a guitar and the manufacturer doesn't do anything about it and they scratch off the names in anger. Not because they're ashamed of the brand.
Yes there is ....that vintage 180 rings and it always has that is the unmistakeable original sound of the 180 and why people are so in love with it sorry th50th just isn't the same they missed the mark if they were trying to replicate it prefer it
If thEy were trying to replicate it, they would’ve used laminate wood. Instead they used solid, so they’re trying to better the original. You just have nonsensical sentimental notions about the mythical FG180 sound.
I think maybe the FG-180 50th has a bit more top-end shimmer and resonance because of the scalloped bracing, I prefer the deeper tone of the vintage FG-180, but they are so close like (2 peas of the same pod).
It's a bit like the difference between vinel and a CD I personally liked the the fg180 more when I played both but I think the 50th anniversary sounds nicer listning to this guy playing both . I found if I closed my eyes and listened I'd open my eyes to see what he was playing and every time it was 50th anniversary
+Jack Kim Me too! - I pre-ordered mine Feb 23rd. Expect shipment on the 18th of March. Can't Wait! To my ears, the 50th has an edge in separation with strong mids and a crunchy bottom, what else could you ask for?

I have an fg 180 red label….better then my father’s Martin D16 by far
I really love your comparisons and demo on guitars. I sometimes listen to them for entertainment and relax. 🤫
And you make all guitars sound great.
wow What a great player...chordal transitions and sequences are off the chart. Very accomplished , clean and articulate player for sure.
Beautiful playing. The 180 really stuns me with its georgeous tone. Congratulations.
Thanks.
i realize it is kinda randomly asking but does anybody know a good website to stream new tv shows online?

The new one sounds way brighter.

Old FG180 sounds like old wine. get better with time flies. Thanks for the comparison video. You play wonderfully :-)
Fantastic demo! Thank you.

Crazy how they made that old 180 sound so good back in the day
dont forget that wood is older

I am very surprised I like the anniversary tone much better - more mellow, more Martin-esque
Isn’t the original laminated wood? At least the sides anyway. Given Yamahas construction experience the new one will stomp all over the vintage, especially when it’s played in more.
By watching him play he seems to look as though he enjoys the vintage one better.

Excellent reviews! Nice playing! Do the FG-300 PLEASE!
Their both awesome.....but the new FG5 that I just gifted myself beats both hands down. Amazing guitar

The old one. Bought mine new 1969. Tried the newer versions..nice but the old one records better + other differences ..tone etc.

So beautiful man, damn you make them sing.
The 50th anniversary edition is fantastic and the better sounding guitar. Doesn't mean it's forbidden to prefer the vintage FG. I certainly don't.
very nice playing and nice guitars. both
Dijual berapa???
Ahhh, what happened to the logo on the headstock of the original?
My thoughts exactly. No tuning forks?
Ass expected, the old one sounds warmer.
Agreed. I also agree on the "ass".
Nothing mellows like chinese plywood
@@kickpublishing That's solid spruce idiot. Now fuck off.
What song is he playing
why u erase the decal? it is not ashamed to have Yamaha guitar, even though i have martin and taylor, i also love my Yamaha alongside my Stafford

More than likely it is not HIS guitar but his client. Joil is a well known for guitar sound sampling.
W SOUND is just a repair shop.
I doubt he did that. I've met owners who have a problem with a guitar and the manufacturer doesn't do anything about it and they scratch off the names in anger. Not because they're ashamed of the brand.
The 50th anniversary is not a fg180. It’s not the same … It’s just a good different guitar .
zorzum except that it's full solid in the 50th, what's the diff?
the age, the color, the story, the touch, the sound, the feeling ... the authenticity
zorzum yeah, but give it a few decades. There’s no way to know what that one sounded like 50 years ago.
Yes there is ....that vintage 180 rings and it always has that is the unmistakeable original sound of the 180 and why people are so in love with it sorry th50th just isn't the same they missed the mark if they were trying to replicate it prefer it

Love the way someone sanded off the Yamaha. I'll take the old one
probably just put some goo on it...advertising gestapo alert.
I think maybe the FG-180 50th has a bit more top-end shimmer and resonance because of the scalloped bracing, I prefer the deeper tone of the vintage FG-180, but they are so close like (2 peas of the same pod).
What type of pick are you using in this Joil ?
Ibanez Steve Vai signature 1.00mm pick using:)
Thanks Joil.your playing is amazing dude.

Something about the old one...
It's aged naturally & definitely sounds better. I'm not a big fan of ARE technology
Oh. I have one. Good
