- Municipal planners and land trusts often work independently and use different systems towards their conservation goals. Both systems have their strengths and challenges and yet the two groups rarely collaborate to effect significant, long-term protection. In this webinar, Ian Attridge, Denise Van Amersfoort and Paul Peterson explored innovative ways that public policy and conservation easements can work in concert. They explored examples of how private landowners, land trusts, and municipalities can take collaborative and strategic approaches towards farmland protection and conservation, such as creating eco-corridors, agricultural land preserves, or holding municipal urban boundary lines.
This webinar was hosted and recorded on Dec 14, 2023.
The Ontario Farmland Trust is a provincial, agricultural focused land trust in Ontario, Canada. Our mission at the Ontario Farmland Trust is to protect and preserve Ontario farmlands and associated agricultural, natural and cultural landscapes of food production for the benefit of Ontarians today and future generations. We do this through direct farmland protection, including conservation easement agreements and fee simple donations of farmland. We also engage in Ontario public policy on farmland, making regular submissions to the Province during policy reviews, and participating in public dialogue and debate surrounding issues of farmland loss that are of provincial significance. Our last area of work is education on farmland loss, with webinars, community outreach, and an annual Farmland Forum.
