Excellent video!!!! One thing that I discovered this year, that readers might find helpful, is that solid color deck paint can NOT be color-matched. This means that you will have to find a color in a deck paint manufacturers current line of swatches that matches your deck color as closely as possible. Not an easy task after seven years!
Looks good.... Not sure if you get them in the USA but try using a Sikkens brush too apply your stain/oil.... you wont turn back ... it gives a beautiful finish when restoring decks. Ben from Melbourne Australia
Nice video man. Well spoken. Sound like a pro.
Glad to hear the painting is going well, and thanks for letting me know about the book--I'm glad you liked it.
Awesome John! Nice work!!!
Didn't have to be all particular about things, products and all.Right to the point, awesome!
Hi--It's really tough to find a deck stain that lasts more than a couple years, especially if you get a lot of snow. My problem is I have to shovel the snow off my decks, and that scrapes off the stain and marks it up. And any time you have water sitting on a surface, it's hard to make stain (or paint) protect for very long. Stay on top of it is all I can say, so the wood doesn't rot, because as soon as that happens you need a new deck. Good luck!
Even in TN it’s hard to get more than 3 years out of a stain. We don’t get the snow, but the hot summers absolutely destroy it
thanks was curious as to how it work out. and yes you are right. snow and other equipment would def beatup the stain/protector no matter what you put on it. read some reviews, watched youtube and get mixed answers. the cost of the stain/coating is less then replacing every three years. so if i can get 5-7 out of it and then recover its worth it. i am thinking next deck. cedar. thanks again for the info!
I haven't used them. Bottom line is a deck surface is exposed to a lot of sun, rain, snow, ice, etc., and no matter what you use it's not going to last too long, at least not in great shape. Two years after I stained this deck I see some spots where it is wearing off...I touched them up with a brush and it looks better. (In this case I think a snow shovel scrapes off the stain.) Anyway, read the online reviews and visit your local paint stores and then make the best decision you can. Good luck!
I don't have any experience covering graffiti, but I recommend using a stain-blocking primer. Oil based would be best. (Like KILZ.) They do make stain-blocking latex primers but they are not quite as effective (in my opinion). Doesn't mean they won't work okay for this job, though. I believe the paint store can tint the primer grey for you if you want. Good luck with that graffiti. Ask at the paint store what they recommend for this. Always good to get a second opinion.
Kudos Man. Probably the Best "How To Paint House Exterior" Videos On youtube and / or other Websites!
Great job sir! Finally.... some one using stain on a deck instead of that rustoleum and behr deck over crap. Can you tell me how long I should wait to use this stain on a new treated lumber deck?
I'd love to know what color that is that you are using on the deck. Thank you!
It looks like Behr Cordovan Brown to me. I’m doing a deck right now and looks exactly the same
Hello. Thanks for the video. What brand of stain do you recommend?

Holy Shirt! Is that you Screech?
"It's all right, cause I'm saved by the bell"!
Looks great bud. You ever use the "Deck Boss Brush?". I've always used roller and brush, or spray
a tip paint always curls arround any edges so do edges first on 4 boards then get on deck and roll em out
Chris W Thanks!
What's the color/brand you used? It looks nice with the white.
My apologies if it has already been answered, but what is the exact color stain and brand used on your deck? It will match mine beautifully.
My deck has some rotted wood. Will I still be able to follow your instructions with the areas that are rotted? Thanksmsomuch.
What color stain did you use looks really nice
good work
What color gray did you use for that Deck?
Dark slate in Cabot acrylic solid stain
Those knee pads are smart buddy ! Save your knees and bones and joints ! Not whimpy at all
I have question about covering graffiti. I have a rental that the previous tenants tagged the garage. Although great urban art. It needs to go. I just want to primer it and was going with a grey hoping it wouldnt bleed through plus was going to use it to primer the house then use egg shell white to paint. Thank!!!!
I have to stain my deck.. ones a years I looks good for one your. We get a lot of snow and the stain falls off ... I have too stain all the time.. can u help me/????? The shoes off is a good thing.. keep it clean..
Is it possible to cover over an old stain with a lighter color or do I have to go with the same tone or darker?
I reckon those socks are going to the bin after
Could you attach the links to the items you used?
don't need to sand, spray a cleaner, or prime? any experience with Olympic maximum solid? is that what you used in this video?
What is the best way to repaint my deck if it's starting to peel...
what if the deck has been primed should i remove the primer before staining the deck?
Nice. But why didnt you use your airless sprayer for this job?
It's pretty quick and easy to roll a deck surface. Even if you sprayed it, you would need to backroll it to work the paint into the wood, so you wouldn't be saving much time. However, if you have a lot of deck RAILING to do it can sometimes be worth using an airless sprayer. A brush and mini-roller combo works pretty well on railing too, though. One factor is how much foliage, nearby buildings, etc., is around the house that you would have to cover from overspray. Sometimes you can spend more time covering stuff up to spray than you would just using a brush and roller. Every situation is different.
Hey was your deck previously painted. My question would be will a solid stain go over an old painted surface that's terribly faded. No peeling just faded. Thanks for any help.
Hey have you found a answer to your question because Im wondering the same thing?
Can you use this on composite decking?
What color deck stain????
Man a real Painter would have burned one before starting the job 😎
what color is that?
Why didn't you spray the deck too
Why cant you use fence paint on floorboards inside your house/ loft?
I'm not sure. You might be able to use it. Ask at the paint store and see what they say. Usually it's best to use products for their intended purpose, but depending on the situation it might not matter.
howtopaintahouse I am using it as it is quick and can paint both sides of the timber and it dries quick and can then be taken into the loft. It can be further treated once it is in place maybe months down the line.
nice video. but 1 question how many gallons of stain to buy? i have a 16ft × 16ft deck
Had to do the conversion as we use Meters in Australia.... you have roughly a 25 SQM deck... most coatings have a spread rate of at least 10 SQM per Litre for the first coat then between 12 - 15 SQM per litre each coat there after as the timber takes on less product. So in short around 6 Litres would do your deck which works out to 1.58 Gallon sorry calculations are different on this side of the work. Ben from Deck Rejuvenation, Melbourne Australia
whats your opinion on the new deck armour products,, rustoleum,, or behr,, just an overview.. not looking for product placement...
thanks!

They SUCK!
Just do it barefooted to get the full effect....
My back hurt just by watching you not extend that pole...

10 days later
work goes much faster with Stodoys plans.
plans for this and many other interesting things are on the Stodoys site.
I want to stain my deck gray has anyone ever do that
Dulce Veiga You can do it any color you want if you are using a solid stain, as I do in this video. If you are using transparent or semi-transparent stain, your color options are more limited.
@@howtopaintahouse What color is that stain? Thanks in advance
Great Job but that has to be the ugliest color I ever seen. Sand it again and use a red Oak !!!
New stain over the old one? Not good at all.
The old one will crack after a short time then the new one will go with it.
This is not a pro job.
oil- base.....oil base, oil base, oil base oil- base, oil base
Hahahahahajaha shit hahahahahaha
Sir to say that no one will notice that you didn't get stain between the boards is just a flat out lie. The only way for a pro look is to make sure stain is covering every part of the board. If I did decks that way I wouldnt get any jobs. There isn't a "technique" to stain a deck but good old fashioned work. Which you are clearly trying to avoid.
cwrowe If you use a thick nap roller as I say in the video (1.25 inch), you'll get enough stain between the boards so that most people won't notice, in my opinion. It partly depends on how wide the gap is between the boards--a wide gap is easier to see into than a narrow gap. But if somebody is really concerned about getting between the boards, I would first of all recommend that if possible they stain the wood before the deck is constructed so they can stain all four sides of each board; or, if the deck is already in place and you are re-staining it, use a sprayer to apply the stain because that will allow you to spray into the gap between the boards; or finally, you can use a brush to get in between the boards as much as possible--although it's probably going to ruin the brush. To be honest I've never had a customer complain about one of my deck staining jobs so it isn't really an issue.
@@howtopaintahouse If I have to get between the boards with a brush, should I do that prior to rolling or after?
That is one ugly house. Good job
