Michael McDonald. Unique in his own right. A class of his own. One day I have look up his credits. To name a few: Steely Dan, Christopher Cross & the Doobie Bros. Great cover Steve. Nailed it man 🎶👍
I plug the drum mics and my iPhone (with the original music) into an old Yamaha mixer. I take the output of the mixer and go directly into a Zoom Q4 camera (also old). The process doesn't involve any post production. It's very simple.
Hey Steve, love watching your drum covers, I use them myself for tutorials, this is one of Michael Mcdonald's best songs, great job, keep on drumming brother!
You nailed it! I play guitar but interestingly I remember watching Jeff Pecaro's instructional video thinking nothing sounds technical/mechanical even when other instruments aren't accompanying him. Everything he did sounded so tastefully musical :-) Great little homage to that master Steve!
I remember seeing the Jeff Porcaro instructional video many years ago too. I remember thinking that I'll NEVER be able to play the right-hand hi-hat part like him. After many years of work, I can do it (sort of). Thank you!!!
I've been working on this groove about every day for the last year or two. How long did it take you before you were comfortable with that 16th note one hand on the HH? I feel like I'm getting close to hitting it but it's nowhere as smooth as yours. I saw the Jeff Porcaro video, like, a hundred times :) and I saw him play that but damn is it hard. Do you have a secret method on getting fast at that or is just a matter of time?
The technique is called the Moeller method. I can't remember how long it took me to get it down but it wasn't quick!! You just have to keep studying and practicing (BOTH hands) until it becomes comfortable and second nature. All I know for sure is if you practice it correctly and consistently, you WILL learn it!!! Good luck. I'm certain you can do it!!!
@@SteveToccoDrummer Thank you sir. Moeller stroke was one of the first things I was taught fortunately. It's interesting you say BOTH hands. I grew up playing soccer and being able to play with both feet, shoot left as well as right, dribbling left instead of right to throw off the defender, so I've taken that approach to drumming as well but my left foot was nowhere near as good as my right. If you had to switch hands, if you were to play a drum kit setup for a south paw, would you be able to play this song opposite hand? If so, I bow to you. I have witnessed Buddy Rich's left hand traditional grip on the snare and it blows my mind.
Damn, really good man. Good work on this. It looks like it's pretty hard to keep that shuffle beat goin. Not sure I could do it. I'd have to practice just playin the groove for a while first. Ad the fills once I get comfortable playing that groove nonstop. Not an easy song to play, that's for sure.
Thank you!! The cymbals to my right are -- 22" Constantinople Ride, 18" Wuhan Crash, 20 " Meinl Byzance Vintage Pure Light RIde and a 16" Zildjian China Trash.
HI STEVE... I HAVE A SUGGESTION FOR A SONG THAT WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU... "MY SECRET PLACE" BY JONI MITCHELL AND PETER GABRIEL... CHECK THAT FANTASTIC GROOVE, I THINK MANU KATCHE PLAYED IN THAT SONG... GREAT DRUMMING BRO, GREETINGS
Sounds great Steve! That's one of my favorite tunes played by Jeff Porcaro. There is this fantastic story about the tune, where Jeff had to grab a new stick while playing. He talks about it in this video. This man was an absolute master: ruclips.net/video/qVTZD4x6Nb4/видео.html
I know where he's talking about, and the funny thing is it sounds REALLY good and I thought it was an intentional change up to give some flair, because he does that throughout the song. In fact if I could cover something like this I'd leave that because of how cool it sounds where the stick broke. I also like that first hit on the snare when the vocal starts. He catches more of the outer part of the head and it gives a very distinct POP. And the kick beat is fantastic.
Your snare sound is too bright and "rock." Porcaro's snare hits that come in once the singing starts is just a tad more than the rim shots, but still as closed, tight and high pitched. You can barely tell the difference between the rim shots and the snare hits.
single handed 16th notes, just like the original, with some of your personal touch, nice.
Thank you!!
Jeff Porcaro played some of the hardest riffs, while sounding REALLY cool. It's no wonder he played on so many artist's songs.
Exactly, they often sound like " hey, I can play that!" Until you delve into them.
Love those ostinatos with the 16th notes single handed... only way to duplicate that sound. Most accurate cover I've heard.
Thank you!! It took a while to learn the hand technique. This song would have killed me 10 or 20 years ago!!
It's unreal how you kept that right hand 16th notes going id struggle I think....I need to learn that technique
Porcaro was such a laid back, groovin’ badass! Choice!!
A very tight drum cover on one of the great smooth groove tracks.
Thank you!!
Love Jeff’s hi hat work on this one. Love The single handed 16th notes and the open hi hat note placement.
Yeah, imagine the control necessary to break from 16th notes closed to 8th note open hi-hat. All while playing a killer kick beat.
Tough groove, really well played Steve! Awesome job! 👍
Thank you!!

¡Gracias!
A superb cover of a wonderful song.
His right hand wowww so tough!!!!! great job Steve
Thank you. I spent a lot of time practicing the Moeller technique. I wouldn't be able to play this song without it.
Hey Steve, do you mix your drum again on a computer or just bypass from mixer to camera mic in ?
I plug the drum mics and my iPhone (with the original music) into an old Yamaha mixer. I take the output of the mixer and go directly into a Zoom Q4 camera (also old). The process doesn't involve any post production. It's very simple.
Thanks steve, keep drumming
such skill> i can tell a true and tried drummer when i see one. well done.
After 40 years of playing I wish I could be better but thank you nonetheless!!!

Love that work on the bridge.

Thank you! Look up the Moeller Method on RUclips. It’s a technique that allows you to play fast 16th notes with a relaxed, easy feel.
Damn that is bang in the groove dude.👏
Thank you!!
Super drumcover of a beautifull song
Nice job! That's a very difficult song to play properly. Jeff has always been one of my biggest influences.

Thanks for the compliment. I am humbled to think Jeff would approve of me. I am NOT worthy!!!
Some pretty tight playing there, Steve! Can u outline the cymbals to your right...looks like u have a secondary ride or crash/ride?
Thank you!! The cymbals to my right are -- 22" Constantinople Ride, 18" Wuhan Crash, 20 " Meinl Byzance Vintage Pure Light RIde and a 16" Zildjian China Trash.
Very good Grove good job timeing is very tight

GOOD JOB ON A FAV SONG
Killed it!!
that part at the end with the rapid bass drum, is that done with one foot or two?
One foot.
There are several methods to do this one footed, just gotta look into it (plenty of videos) and find the one that works best for you!
NICE job!!!
You got it Steve Toccgadd!!! ;-)
Thank you!!
lit
Bravo!
Thank you!
Muy bien
Perfect!
Not quite perfect but I'm always striving for it. Thank you!!

I live drumming Jeff Porcaro music
Thank you!!
grande
Grazie!!
musicalmente le debemos tanto al maestro Jeff Porcaro... Q.E.P.D.
Smooth
This grove has to be played with just one hand for the high hat. More funk.
Yep, one handed is the only way. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Please, may I have more of this goodness .... Puhlease?
Funny comment!!! :-)
BPM?
i knew right then the groove was in the pocket. . the crashes have a nice wash . whats the name of the crashes.
Thank you. The crash cymbals are Wuhan…very inexpensive.
Boom! .
Boom - Boom - Boom Chick-a-Boom. LOL!!!! Thank you!!
Stylish and smooth as a babys bum!
HA!! Thanks, Roy!! I hope all's well with you.

He's just riding it out right, no Molar?
in the pocket!!!
I’m pretty sure my right hand would fall off attempting 16th note rhythms for that long 😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫😁
You play tough tunes real well..oh, the easyer one's too
Thank you! One way or another, they're ALL tough!
My teacher said play that groove, so hard that fast up and down on the hihat, takes time to get the motion
Look on RUclips for videos that explain the Moeller Method for drumming. That's the key to playing these kind of grooves. Go get 'em!!!!!
Sounds great Steve! That's one of my favorite tunes played by Jeff Porcaro. There is this fantastic story about the tune, where Jeff had to grab a new stick while playing. He talks about it in this video. This man was an absolute master: ruclips.net/video/qVTZD4x6Nb4/видео.html

I have the same critique. The snare is set for rock drumming, not R&B.
Your snare is too bright and open.
😎🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Bravo!
Thank you!
