  • Reno has never forgotten the spectacle that occurred within its city limits in 1910. James Jefferies was the "Great White Hope" for some Americans to take back the heavyweight title from the African-American champion Jack Johnson. In this video we'll visit the locations of the actual fight and the training camps, we'll learn the backstory of the boxers, how the bout came to be, and what happened that day and in later years. One of these men received a full presidential pardon! Plus we stop at Lead Dog Brewing, just down the street from the site of the fight.

This is the place to learn interesting things about Reno and Nevada! My name is Steve and I've lived in Reno for 37 years (as an adult!). I've had a lifelong interest in historical topics, and spend much time exploring and researching this wonderful area. I started this channel to share some of what I've learned. I produced a full-length documentary film on the history of Harolds Club casino in 2015.
Perhaps you're thinking of moving to Reno and are looking for background on the area, or you're already a resident and this content might help give you a sense of place. I shall endeavor to cater to both groups!
I'm also a craft beer enthusiast, and thought I'd talk about some of that brewery scene here as well. I started homebrewing 31 years ago in 1992, and earned the Certified Cicerone designation in 2015 - this is a sommelier-esque program for beer people.
Please subscribe, share and come along with me on this journey! Thanks and cheers!
    Steve

My wife and I live in Arlington Towers. We have been in Reno since 2015. We love your videos. You are an excellent docent and historian. I have often wondered what famous people have lived in Arlington Towers. I know that Ephrem Zimbalist lived here. That Bill Harrah provided a unit for Sammy Davis on the 17th floor of Arlington Towers. But what other stories are there? The same with Park Tower. Did Marilyn and Frank ever hang out there?

Nix to Marilyn. Park Tower was built after her death.

Thank you for this great video! So look forward to more! Again, hoping you could make a video about the Reno "ditches". The little research I've done has shown they are a fascinating part of our history!

@@SteveTRYK Hey Steve! Do you ever give history lectures anywhere? I'd sure like to attend one if you do. Years ago a fellow used to give them on occasion at the Gold Hill Hotel.

Another championship caliber boxer in Reno history was Oscar Bonavena . I imagine that story will be depicted in the Joe Conforte episode. 😮

Jack Johnson was (in my opinion) the literal Original Gangster. he wore elaborate fur coats, had a gold tooth, a posse, fancy cars, women wanted to be on his arm, and he loved a good party and knew how to use the media to his advantage. Dude was a straight-up PLAYER.

Awesome education and as always perfectly represented...Growing up in Reno, I would often turn off of 4th Street and take a few seconds at the location of the fiight. Those $20 and up tickets for that fight was no cheap date back then....Thanks again, and it was very cool of President Trump to pardon Mr.Johnson.
