  • The male grizzly was foraging near the water when the female and cub appeared. Eventually the Grizzly chases the black bear and her cub into a tree while standing at its base. The black bear gets down and drives the Grizzly back down to the water to give time for the cub to get down and escape.

    This is why black bears of the Yellow Stone live in forested areas while Grizzly bears live in the prairie areas. Because adult Grizzlies can’t climb trees; they are too heavy, but black bears can climb trees. Grizzly bears are twice as big as black bears and actively prey on black bears.

    • @bishqueen5514
      @bishqueen5514 2 года назад +32

      Can't is misleading. They just don't do it often, and it's for a few reasons.
      There is plenty of documentation of grizzly bears (mostly female) climbing trees, but they aren't as proficient at it. Black bears are much more proficient because (as you may know) they are designed for it. Their anatomy enables them to do it much easier. I think, much like cougars & leopards, their wrists can swivel to grasp the tree so much easier. Their claws are much better equipped for grasping bark and branches.
      Besides the anatomy, doing things like climbing can be sort of a learned behavior. Lions aren't well known for climbing trees, but certain prides in certain parts of Africa are well known for their climbing abilities and do it often, even climbing as far as leopards to chase/kill/steal food.
      Effort is another factor. There's a certain point in which expending the effort goes too far, and becomes too risky. A large male grizzly risks injuring himself and won't make that compromise.
      Here are some videos of such:
      ruclips.net/video/x2W2vQD-M4k/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/6hm9GJwscBs/видео.html (not a wild bear)
      ruclips.net/video/wNwnWntk5bE/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/rdgepTdA3oU/видео.html
      Very clearly not as quick or graceful as a black bear, but still fast than a human could ever.

    This is one of the best bear educational videos, you will ever see.
    It shows the speed of both, a black & a brown (grizzly) bear, on the ground and the speed a black bear can climb up trees & the speed they can climb down trees.
    Don't be fooled by the lack of branches. They move with the same speed when there are branches.
    Running is futile.
    A bear, perfect storm.
    A black bear. An animal your have to fight, in order to live.
    A brown bear. An animal you have to play dead, in order to live.
    A true nightmare.
    It was interesting to see this play out.
    I was thinking, it wasn't possible for the black bear & her cub not to know the grizzly was there.
    But, they didn't seem concerned.
    Then there it is. Some unknown.
    And suddenly it's a mad dash straight for the trees.

      Black bears rarely if ever attacks humans, and most of those cases are because of mothers defending their cubs to nosy people not respecting rules. There's less than one death per year caused by Black bears and 99% of the cases are due to people coming to close to mothers protecting their cubs. You're more likely to get killed by a cow than a black bear.

    • @Winddancer1991
      @Winddancer1991 2 года назад +4

      Ahem, just going to say that grizzly bears are just as scared/curious about humans as humans are bears. Most bear attacks on humans are provoked, the rare instances where bear attacks are unprovoked are from humans lack of knowledge in that if you run from a predator, it triggers their chase and attack reaction in their brain, it’s almost like if I acted like I was going to throw something at your face and you flinched out of instinct, same for bears when you do a flight response. With black bears you stand your ground scream look big and fight back, black bears are actually scarier than grizzly in the fact that they will kill you to eat you. Grizzlys don’t actively eat humans. Even ones they have killed. With grizzly’s you also stand your ground, scream, look big, BUT you do not fight back, if the grizzly does decide to go through with the attack, you play dead, grizzlys thinking, threat eliminated and quickly gets bored of your supposed corpse, it will not eat you. Black bears will, you must fight a black bear if it attacks
      Edit: also on the grizzly thing, it’s actually encouraged to shit yourself if you can while playing dead if the grizzly is attacking. Grizzly’s hate the smell and taste of human, shitting yourself is just another deterrent. I myself think it would just come naturally. The rule of thumb is as follows
      If it’s black, fight back
      If it’s brown, get down
      If it’s white (polar bear) say your prayer, because your dead

    • @dr.mikejohnson2851
      @dr.mikejohnson2851 3 года назад +16

      Not too "vast" - only about 200 yards between them. Grizz range hundreds of square miles as their "territory", but essentially just go wherever they go. Mature boars will ALWAYS kill any smaller black bear they can catch. Equal weight black bear can fight off a grizz, and this sow came down aggressively to face the ~400 lb grizz. She MIGHT have been able to fight him off, but if the grizz was aggressive enough he could've easily killed her. Surprises me that young boar grizzlies don't mate with black bear sows in heat, but it's never been documented. Dominant boar grizzlies kill as many grizz cubs they can catch, which is why ignoramus leftist wackos arguing against hunting are the real danger to healthy bear populations in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. Over 64 bears were either shot or euthanized in 2020 with multiple attacks. 2 fatalities I know of in Montana this year. @redelfshotthefood8213 2 года назад +3

      With the baby bear up in the tree tactics to engage the mother and the separate her from the cub won’t work. Because the Grizz’s backside would be wide open to attack if he climbed the tree to get at the cub.
      If you watch predatory take down videos of lions, wolves, hyenas, they attack the genitals and flanks of their larger prey. The young of every species is much less able to protect themselves, so great predatory targets.
      So, the treed cub is safe. Unless the male wishes to accept the defensive injuries of the mother bear. It’s unlikely he’d do that because he can simply try this pair again another day. Because in another day the cub might fall out if the tree. Or trip. Or get cornered. All these scenarios are much better for the predator. And he won’t expend as much energy as a fight would require.
      Further, the injuries a fight to the death with a motivated adult bear might put him in a bad position for a future fight with an equal.

      Thoroughbreds & Quarter Horses were specifically bred for speed an acceleration. -Bears have bred their own speed, which in my opinion, is more impressive.
      You put a thoroughbred on this sort of terrain and it would break a leg fast, especially if it's a poorly bred, off-the-casino-assembly thoroughbred. They are awful examples.
      Horses and other ungulates have an advantage over predators: They are running for their lives.
      Bears can hold a fast pace for just as a respectable amount of time as an herbivore can, in my opinion. It's a pretty even comparison, and that is why predators and prey continue to survive and thrive.
      Sometimes the herbivore wins, sometimes they lose.
