Thank you for mentioning the housing crisis here in Portugal! As a Portuguese living in Oporto, the real skyrocketing prices are in Lisbon and Oporto not in the countryside. And we need more people to come to the rural areas, that are deserted, and fill them with life, with children laughter and opportunities to work. That also helps the local communities. My take on the matter is: welcome to all who come from good to do good :)

We had a dream to be out of the city, and be able to have òne parent @ home to raise future children. In the end we found a property like you,we built our home mostly by our selves.and had our kids & lived in the country for 40yrs. Life is what you make it.

Portugal ainda é um pedacinho do céu na terra porque, felizmente, ainda não foi tomado pelas teorias mais ortodoxas de um certo modo de ser e viver segundo padrões que se dizem de desenvolvimento.Para muitos é um sinal de um certo atraso para outros, onde me incluo, é a nossa matriz cultural portuguesa que passa de geração em geração. I saw South Pacific when I was 7 yrs old. And I used to sing the song, Happy Talk, all the time. I always wanted to see Bali, and I did 26 yrs ago and ended up marrying a Balinese and moved here . Serendipity along with destiny, i guess one could say. I live 99 percent of the time outside, a real dream come true.
Love how the boys have a normal life, which nowadays is rare. Would recommend everyone to do the chance while they can. We tried but failed in France for several reasons, hubby had to work 7 days a week to survive, he was taxed at 47%, as an electrician having to drill through stone walls took a toll on his back which resulted in him being unable to work. We managed 9 unforgettable years and would return tomorrow if we could, we still have many French friends. Always follow your dreams as life is too short.
I love my house and my neighbours are great and mum and dad lived up the road so I new I would be happy here. Lived in the area for 53 years and in my house for 36 yrs. I don't think I will ever move. I love your videos they give me some ideas as to what i want to grow or try to grow so thank you for that want to try okra next year.

I love my house too…I’ve lived in it for 45 years! My daughter who’s also 45 was born in it and she has lived in our road all her life…but we love our home in Portugal too…the best of both worlds!

I am currently watching your renovation videos from the beginning and am currently at the one where you built the compost thing. In todays video, and in another old one that I saw recently, you guys mentioned some of the biggest/bigger channels. I just really want to say that, I hope you do always remember that how big a channel may be is one metric of success, but definitely not the only metric. I don't want to talk negative about others here, so all I will say is that I am not a fan of those channels. I tried watching them but somethings didn't feel right so now I don't at all. What I do want to do is highlight what for me makes you Newbys so special. I would like to give '7 good reasons' (hehe) but a bit pressed for time so will just say a few for now :P The special thing about you guys is that watching your channel not only provides entertainment, but also deep nourishment for the soul. Your genuineness and sensitivity as humans, partners to each other, and parents comes across so well and is so inspiring. Your content helps us reflect on what lives we want for ourselves, how we would want to be as parents, and so much more. Someday soon, I will express more fully how special you guys are. What a fabulous video. I remember seeing that show live John in Scarborough, it was a coach trip my Mum took me on. I loved it. Fast forward, here I am now at La Petite Maison, and people tell me how lucky I am. Twenty seven years ago, we took a leap of faith, before the internet, before You Tube and all we know now. We took a leap of faith and bought a village house with no mains electricity, no plumbing, a leaking roof and a chewed over garden but oh boy did it have charm. We named it the perfectly imperfect house and it’s stuck. You have to have a dream, only then can you have a dream come true. Take care xx

I'm old now, but when I was young and about to be a mother for the first time, the dream I had was to be able to stay with my baby and not take her to a daycare. You are absolutely correct when you say just go for it. We were too late for our dreams. We were extremely happy but our dream was to retire and travel. We just didn't make it. I had a smile on my face all the way through reason 4, the boys are having such a great time and when they grow up they will have so many stories to tell and videos in this case as evidence to back them up. Great episode, though. When winter comes I suggest you going to visit Serra da Estrela (Star Mountains) it snows there a lot and you can even go skiing I'm sure the boys will love it and it will surely be a good fit for you as explorers.

Lovely video. Just to say the house price thing is a nightmare in rural areas in UK. I lived in Devon and so many locals were struggling to find not just buying, but also renting. All the city folk moving to the south west has had quite a devastating effect. Prices pushed to crazy level.It's particularly difficult when houses are just used a few weeks a year for holiday homes. Local pay isn't great either so similar to Portugal. Personally, I think there should be a law that protects and prioritises local people in every country. Eg a local person needing accommodation should come above someone from London needing a holiday home. It would even things out a bit but still allow personal choice. Ethical ways of working, of business, economy so important if we want to change the world for the better. There are already solutions if we embrace them, are willing to shake things up. Sidenote, we're in Serra da São Mamede but the north also calls us. I feel very very lucky to be here, though we haven't a house yet. Just a caravan and cabin for now as we're here to reforest, regenerate land... experiment for a while and see if we can help locals find sustainable solutions that works for them at some point. Such lovely people! Thank you guys for the gentle, real, content you create. Happy for you all. Your kids are being given a fab start in life!

I rather have you then the odd people that buy property and come 1 week per year, specially on the coast and major cities, that's one of the reasons real estate market is so high there. As you know, Portuguese population are getting very old and the country side lost a lot of young people who emigrated or went to the coast for better job opportunities . So we welcome all nationalities who come to help repopulate our interior. It's really a pleasure to see the opportunity you give your kids to be raised in the nature and the joy you give them. My daughters and I have been singing Happy, Happy, Happy, Happy Talk for years since I first showed them South Pacific, and the three of us went to Kauai and stood on Mt. Makana and sang it together. I don’t know how I stumbled upon y’all’s channel…but it is absolutely lovely. We are retired homesteaders living on five acres in middle Georgia, USA. We have traveled to the UK as our daughter went to the university of Bangor in Wales for her masters and Doctorate (quite a few years ago 🤦♀️) and over the years we’ve traveled to Ireland and Italy. I wanted to thank you for bringing us along for your journey in Portugal. 🤍🤍🤍
Such a wonderful episode which will be so useful to everyone who might be thinking about making any changes in their live styles, not just moving to Portugal. Serendipity has played a part in our lives too…finding a house in UK where we have lived on and off for 45 years …with an allotment nearby…my parents buying a cottage in southern Portugal 40 years back…finding a job near that house ( in the classified ads of a local newspaper!) when I was made redundant! We lived there for 10 years and only came back to UK when surprisingly both our children had twins but now we can spread our time equally between both countries. It is hard to see local people being pushed out of the local housing markets, but it’s not just estrangeiros…many apartments in cities like Lisbon and Porto are being turned into Airbnbs as well, and many rural properties remain empty because younger people want to move from their villages. You make very good points about being near to an airport, the possibilities of utilities, the weather etc.

Thank you for mentioning the housing crisis here in Portugal! As a Portuguese living in Oporto, the real skyrocketing prices are in Lisbon and Oporto not in the countryside. And we need more people to come to the rural areas, that are deserted, and fill them with life, with children laughter and opportunities to work. That also helps the local communities. My take on the matter is: welcome to all who come from good to do good :)

We had a dream to be out of the city, and be able to have òne parent @ home to raise future children. In the end we found a property like you,we built our home mostly by our selves.and had our kids & lived in the country for 40yrs. Life is what you make it.

Portugal ainda é um pedacinho do céu na terra porque, felizmente, ainda não foi tomado pelas teorias mais ortodoxas de um certo modo de ser e viver segundo padrões que se dizem de desenvolvimento.Para muitos é um sinal de um certo atraso para outros, onde me incluo, é a nossa matriz cultural portuguesa que passa de geração em geração. I saw South Pacific when I was 7 yrs old. And I used to sing the song, Happy Talk, all the time. I always wanted to see Bali, and I did 26 yrs ago and ended up marrying a Balinese and moved here . Serendipity along with destiny, i guess one could say. I live 99 percent of the time outside, a real dream come true.

Love how the boys have a normal life, which nowadays is rare. Would recommend everyone to do the chance while they can. We tried but failed in France for several reasons, hubby had to work 7 days a week to survive, he was taxed at 47%, as an electrician having to drill through stone walls took a toll on his back which resulted in him being unable to work. We managed 9 unforgettable years and would return tomorrow if we could, we still have many French friends. Always follow your dreams as life is too short.

I love my house and my neighbours are great and mum and dad lived up the road so I new I would be happy here. Lived in the area for 53 years and in my house for 36 yrs. I don't think I will ever move. I love your videos they give me some ideas as to what i want to grow or try to grow so thank you for that want to try okra next year.

I love my house too…I’ve lived in it for 45 years! My daughter who’s also 45 was born in it and she has lived in our road all her life…but we love our home in Portugal too…the best of both worlds!

Hi Newbys! Thanks so much for sharing this. Its lovely to listen to you guys. I am currently watching your renovation videos from the beginning and am currently at the one where you built the compost thing. In todays video, and in another old one that I saw recently, you guys mentioned some of the biggest/bigger channels.
I just really want to say that, I hope you do always remember that how big a channel may be is one metric of success, but definitely not the only metric. I don't want to talk negative about others here, so all I will say is that I am not a fan of those channels. I tried watching them but somethings didn't feel right so now I don't at all.
What I do want to do is highlight what for me makes you Newbys so special. I would like to give '7 good reasons' (hehe) but a bit pressed for time so will just say a few for now :P The special thing about you guys is that watching your channel not only provides entertainment, but also deep nourishment for the soul. Your genuineness and sensitivity as humans, partners to each other, and parents comes across so well and is so inspiring. Your content helps us reflect on what lives we want for ourselves, how we would want to be as parents, and so much more. Someday soon, I will express more fully how special you guys are. What a fabulous video. I remember seeing that show live John in Scarborough, it was a coach trip my Mum took me on. I loved it. Fast forward, here I am now at La Petite Maison, and people tell me how lucky I am. Twenty seven years ago, we took a leap of faith, before the internet, before You Tube and all we know now. We took a leap of faith and bought a village house with no mains electricity, no plumbing, a leaking roof and a chewed over garden but oh boy did it have charm. We named it the perfectly imperfect house and it’s stuck. You have to have a dream, only then can you have a dream come true. Take care xx

I'm old now, but when I was young and about to be a mother for the first time, the dream I had was to be able to stay with my baby and not take her to a daycare. I wanted to be the one to care for her. Those years are so precious and they go by so quickly. The joy I see in your family is so beautiful, I cannot wait to watch every video. I know how it is hard until you find the right place which we did for France, Unfortunately due to my husband dying a week or so ago all the dreams are now gone. So I can say to anyone that has the chance just go for it before its too late! Loved watching😘
I am very sorry to hear your sad news. Please accept my condolences. I lost my husband seventeen months ago and I am still trying to get over the shock. You are absolutely correct when you say just go for it. We were too late for our dreams. We were extremely happy but our dream was to retire and travel. We just didn't make it.

I had a smile on my face all the way through reason 4, the boys are having such a great time and when they grow up they will have so many stories to tell and videos in this case as evidence to back them up. Great episode, though.
When winter comes I suggest you going to visit Serra da Estrela (Star Mountains) it snows there a lot and you can even go skiing I'm sure the boys will love it and it will surely be a good fit for you as explorers.

Lovely video. Just to say the house price thing is a nightmare in rural areas in UK. I lived in Devon and so many locals were struggling to find not just buying, but also renting. All the city folk moving to the south west has had quite a devastating effect. Prices pushed to crazy level.It's particularly difficult when houses are just used a few weeks a year for holiday homes. Local pay isn't great either so similar to Portugal. Personally, I think there should be a law that protects and prioritises local people in every country. Eg a local person needing accommodation should come above someone from London needing a holiday home. It would even things out a bit but still allow personal choice. Ethical ways of working, of business, economy so important if we want to change the world for the better. There are already solutions if we embrace them, are willing to shake things up. Sidenote, we're in Serra da São Mamede but the north also calls us. I feel very very lucky to be here, though we haven't a house yet. Just a caravan and cabin for now as we're here to reforest, regenerate land... experiment for a while and see if we can help locals find sustainable solutions that works for them at some point. Such lovely people! Thank you guys for the gentle, real, content you create. Happy for you all. Your kids are being given a fab start in life!

I rather have you then the odd people that buy property and come 1 week per year, specially on the coast and major cities, that's one of the reasons real estate market is so high there. As you know, Portuguese population are getting very old and the country side lost a lot of young people who emigrated or went to the coast for better job opportunities
. So we welcome all nationalities who come to help repopulate our interior. It's really a pleasure to see the opportunity you give your kids to be raised in the nature and the joy you give them. Enjoy your dream. ✌️☮️

We have traveled to the UK as our daughter went to the university of Bangor in Wales for her masters and Doctorate (quite a few years ago 🤦♀️) and over the years we’ve traveled to Ireland and Italy. I wanted to thank you for bringing us along for your journey in Portugal. 🤍🤍🤍

Such a wonderful episode which will be so useful to everyone who might be thinking about making any changes in their live styles, not just moving to Portugal.
Serendipity has played a part in our lives too…finding a house in UK where we have lived on and off for 45 years …with an allotment nearby…my parents buying a cottage in southern Portugal 40 years back…finding a job near that house ( in the classified ads of a local newspaper!) when I was made redundant!
We lived there for 10 years and only came back to UK when surprisingly both our children had twins but now we can spread our time equally between both countries.
It is hard to see local people being pushed out of the local housing markets, but it’s not just estrangeiros…many apartments in cities like Lisbon and Porto are being turned into Airbnbs as well, and many rural properties remain empty because younger people want to move from their villages.
You make very good points about being near to an airport, the possibilities of utilities, the weather etc.
