- Timothy is the Real Thing
There's really no one like Timothy. He actually cares about your well-being! It's a nice change because a lot of people are just focused on themselves and not really thinking about what matters to Jesus Christ. Philippians 2:20
Big Idea: Jesus calls His followers to care for others with the same heart of compassion that He demonstrated. Just as Timothy exemplified this care in his ministry, we are called to love and serve God's people selflessly. John 21:15
I. Timothy's Example of Caring for the Flock (Philippians 2:19)
A. Paul's Affirmation of Timothy's Care
Text: "I have no one else like him, who will show genuine concern for your welfare." (Philippians 2:20)
B. Selfless Service Rooted in Christ's Love
Text: "For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ." (Philippians 2:21)
C. Proven Character and Faithful Service
Text: "But you know that Timothy has proved himself because as a son with his father, he has served with me in the work of the gospel." (Philippians 2:22)
II. Jesus' Command to Peter: A Call to Care (John 21:15)
A. The Restoration of Peter
Text: "When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, 'Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?' 'Yes, Lord,' he said, 'you know that I love you.' Jesus said, 'Feed my lambs.'" (John 21:15)
B. The Command to Feed His Sheep
Text: "Again Jesus said, 'Simon son of John, do you love me?' He answered, 'Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.' Jesus said, 'Take care of my sheep.'" (John 21:16)
C. The Final Affirmation
Text: "The third time he said to him, 'Simon son of John, do you love me?' Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, 'Do you love me?' He said, 'Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.' Jesus said, 'Feed my sheep.'" (John 21:17)
III. The Call to Care for God's Sheep Today
A. We Are Called to Follow Jesus' Example of Care
Scripture: John 10:11 - "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep."
B. A Call to Shepherd with Compassion
Scripture: 1 Peter 5:2-3 - "Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, watching over them-not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock."
C. Practical Ways to Care for Others
Scripture: Galatians 6:2 - "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."
Application:
Reflect on Your Relationship with Christ - Are you showing Christ's love by caring for those around you?
Prayer: A Heart like Timothy
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your love and for showing us what it means to care deeply for others. You’ve called us to follow the example of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, and to love and serve with compassion, just as Timothy did.
Help us to care for others with genuine hearts, seeking their well-being above our own. May we respond to Your call, as Peter did, to "feed Your sheep" and to lead others closer to You through humble service.
Give us wisdom, strength, and a shepherd’s heart that reflects Your love. Let our actions glorify You and bless those around us.
In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
