In this video, Lloyd shows you how to do a forward inside 3 turn on ice. This is an important figure skating move to learn as it's one of the basic turns you can do on the ice. It can be harder than the forward outside 3 turn at first as you can't use the free hip to check the rotation as easily.

You look so straight after turn. It's very pretty. I was taught that I need to bend ,rise, bend. Last bend is to maintain the balance.

There is nothing wrong with bend rise and bend, it's typically something you would do on a turn.
The only reason I didn't talk about ending the 3 turn with another bend is I didn't want to give another thing for people to focus on. The main thing I wanted people to focus on when trying this exercise is the position of the upper body in relation to the lower body to help make this turn work.

I wonder if that bend/rise/bend is strictly necessary. I don't notice that the expert coaches do that, even if they tell us to do it. My outside 3-turn is getting good and I don't bend/rise/bend. Instead I concentrate on "lift heel/turn/slam heel back down" and that seems to work for me. Lifting the heel IS strictly necessary. I have noticed in this and other skills that I have a tendency to want to skip coachs' meticulous advice. I don't need to do that. That's too hard. I can do it without doing that. I tried it twice and it didn't work for me. Is that really necessary? Isn't there an easier way? Maybe beginners need to do that, but not me. Hence, my current questioning and lack of action on "bend/rise/bend." I learned to do 3-turn by practicing on the wall. When doing that I did use the "bend/rise/bend" technique but now my 3-turn is getting good and I don't do it anymore. My own laziness/non-conformity aside, when these coaches show us how smooth and easy a 3-turn should be, they do not bend/rise/bend. So???

My nemesis, the right forward inside three. I never could get consistent as with my other turns.

Do 50 each foot every practice session on the ice. you will, eventually, get good.

@@TheLarryBrown You are wrong about that . I tried it. All it that happens is frustration. Since I didn't care about competition or testing I let it go.

Thank you, I just learned how to do forward outside 3 turn and now need to practice inside 3 turn.😄

The mechanics of the inside 3 turn are similar to the outside 3 turn. If you can do the outside, you'll get this one too with a bit of practice. Though with this one, it can be easy to get the arms muddled up. Make sure you pay special attention to this!

I've been doing these for a few weeks but these are really useful tips! My coach has told me to bring my leg back after I turn? Almost like a landing position. But I often feel like I just fling myself around.
I'm currently trying to do backwards to forwards three turns as well, do you have a video on those already? If not that would be great :)
Thanks for the video, have a great day!

There is nothing wrong with taking your leg back after the turn, I don't do it like that in the video as I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible. If you are taking the leg back, I would advise bringing it in to turn, then extending back on the exit. Swinging the leg around wide during the turn is quite a bit more advanced, and it's good to get the basic version good before trying it.
We don't currently have videos covering backward to forward 3 turns, but we'll be filming that soon! Stay tuned :)

Thank you so much for this video!! I’ve been struggling to keep my hip square after the three turns (it causes me to always turn too much and put my other foot sown). Any more tips as you to keep the hip back (against the rotation) after the turn please? How to fight this unnatural pushing hip back thing as you mention in the video please?

Coach Lloyd and Coach Julia teach the fwd inside 3-turn different from each other with the arms. You can't both be right, and we need an answer. One of you needs to 'fess up and admit that the other has it right. Coach Lloyd teaches "opposite arm forward," which is the same way that both coaches teach the fwd outside 3-turn. That is, if your right foot is set to skate forward, you put your left arm forward, not embracing the circle but opposite the circle. Coach Julia teaches "same arm forward," which is unexpected since that's different than how the outside 3-turn is done. And none of this "there are multiple ways to do it." nonsense. We need concrete beginner's instruction.

If you look closely, Lloyd actually rotates his body and arms before the turn, and after he is rotated, he does it exactly the same as Julia. I know it might be confusing for a beginner since those look like two different moves, but in the end, it's the same. I learned it from Coach Julia, but then my coach told me to do Lloyd's way and it took some time to readjust, but after all I got it. "There are multiple ways" is not nonsense, different coaches have different techniques (and I assume Coach Julia might be the American way, and Lloyd's the European way, but can't say for sure). If you feel overwhelmed, just choose one coach and follow their technique only, they both will get you the same result in the long run

@@hekoriginaljni6489yes it is nonsense to say "and now you need to do the arms like this. The arms are very important. If you don't do the arms like this, you will spin out of control. Don't ignore the arms, they are very important. Start with the right arm in front." Huh? But Coach Lloyd taught me to do it with the left arm in front. "Oh, well, it doesn't matter, you can do it either way."
      Yes, that is patent nonsense.

You're are cheating! This is not a 3 turn, you're simply doing a 180 instead with a very subtle hop-up... If you do a real 3 turn your skate should draw a large number 3 shape on the ice.
What your skate makes is nothing but a large semicircle with a little discontinuity....
