Oh some 20 years ago I went to Perth for a visit. Our group were just strolling in some random place, and all of the sudden an Aussie guy gave us his middle finger. No it was actually two fingers from each of his hand which he was also moving up and down. This memory kept popping up here and there in my head, you know like wanting to know why. But now I know he was showing affection. I wish I could go back in time to give him a hug.

Perth (WA) is a really small city. Therefore, most shops will close early because it's uneconomical (expensive) to keep the shop open for a long time. If you want action, you'll need to live in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Gold Coast. In Oz, we normally address people by their first name because the surname belongs to their parents. To address someone as a Doctor, Lady or Sir sounds a bit w@#ky.

A comment on the banter from myself (Australian), I think that a part of the friendly insult thing is because it's being playful. Here, something such as giving the middle finger is considered quite childish, therefore, if you wanted to express anger to someone, you wouldn't give them the finger because they would think you are childish and stupid. So it's typically used to play with others, the subconscious tells you that the person is being childish, so a little cheeky and fun.

I really don't understand culture shock. No one can move across the world and expect to see the same culture, surely. Wouldn't everyone actually expect many things to be different? I think I would be pissed off if I travelled across the world and nearly everything was the same.

@@adriannoniss kind of the atmosphere and the ways in which they are made to feel? like is it normalised? is there any stigma? are there alot of members in perth to connect with and relate to? • @adriannoniss

@@AdilKhan-bh8mn Yea I may not be the best person to ask about this, but the LGBTQIA+ community seems to be very well accepted. I’m sure there will be individual issues here and there but, as a whole, they seem to very much accepted. Definitely much more than in Asia at least… hope this helped! I moved to Malaysia recently for uni but somehow this fits my overall experience but in the opposite way so well. Malayasian Chinese ppl in uni literally get offended over small things 🥲 I just cursed the f word once in a group chat n was using lots of laughing emojis to represent the tone...a guy legit wrote a whole paragraph about how it's not okay to curse, dude wtf 😭 my fellow international friends also had similar experiences...the culture shock is REAL.

Drinking tends to be more a young person thing, like a rite of passage. In some organisations it might be a part of the culture, but it’s often perfectly ok not to participate and in some places it wouldn’t be a thing at all. It always ok not to binge.
