Mine was the updates 2015 thomas with a grey front footplate lighter blue paint and the more accurate face With oval layout , Annie and clarabel coaches That was my first ever model railway . Years later swapping to N scale and a year ago getting a tomix n scale thomas Annie and clarabel . Now this year getting a percy to join in .
I never got that set as a kid but my love for railways and model railways all came from Thomas. Being born in 1985 I was bang in the thomas craze . I was obsessed , enough that one of my teachers requested to my mum if i could draw/make something at school that isn't thomas related lol 😂
It's nice seeing another video featuring this rare variant of Thomas from 1980's Hornby range. I actually have the first one from 1985 that had the Railway Series face and the one shown here. Overall a very nice video.
Wonderful memories. I love Thomas. The TV series came a bit after my time but I grew up with the original books which I still have somewhere. Have a great time at the Bluebell.
Thanks for watching Robert, ahhhh honestly can't wait to get to the Bluebell, so excited! My wallet on the other hand is not quite looking forward to it so much😂😂
Why would I run away. I have Thomas, Clarabel, and Annie. I also have Emily, and her coach and brake coach. Mine are Bachmann, the Hornby one didn't make it to the U.S. around here. I didn't get a set, but had to buy them individually. Thomas definitely has his place in Model Railroading. It's amazing how many small railroads here have Thomas visits to their Railroads which mostly sell out. I agree Thomas is a great introduction to the Hobby, and, anything that helps the Hobby Grow is a good thing!! Also, I started Model railroading in 1968 at 3 years of age with my dad.
Sorry i missed your comment Richard. I do apologise. Fantastic! Im pleased Thomas is popular in the US too, he is definitely part of so many people's memories growing up and plays a huge part in introducing people to the hobby. I love the look of the Bachmann models, especially with the moving eye feature! Im definitely going to be adding some to our collection in the future. Thank you so much Richard. All the best, Martin
Thank you Lee! There is something really special about reconnecting with something we used to have and enjoy so much. I hope one day you find the set you had! 👍
My earliest memory of having a model railway was a layout kept under minivans my brothers bunk beds in our bedroom in our flat roofed house in East Tilbury when I was like 2 or 3. There was a tunnel with these flat brown double tunnel mouths and also a sort of quarry with white painted hillsides. The rolling stock I remember was two clockwork Thomas 0-4-0s and a clockwork Percy.
Fantastic memories! Thank you so much for sharing them and indeed watching our video. Very much appreciated. Ah yes the 0-4-0 clockwork Thomas characters, I remember those.! Brilliant!
Never got a Thomas set when I was younger but I did pick up that set in a second hand shop a year ago for £30. It wasn't in as good condition as your set. But still worked after a bit of cleaning. I have made sure that each of my children have a Thomas character engine. Sometimes I just have a Thomas running session.
Hi Mark! Ah that is cool you have the same set!, brilliant! That is the lovely thing about the whole Thomas books, Tv series and of course the models, they can be enjoyed by anyone at any age regardless of their initial interest in trains. And to think that the simple idea of giving these locomotives human like characters and personalities, could inspire generations of people to develop a passion for railways and model railways alike for so many years to come is incredible.
Great video, I was an 80s kid so i know exactly where your coming from. Thomas the tank engine has done more for uk model railway industry than anything else. I used to have a Hornby thomas collection and i sold them 3 years ago big regret.
Thank you so much for watching, and of course for you kind comments. I couldn't agree more that Thomas has been simply fantastic for railways over the years. Its a shame you sold your collection, I have feeling young Evie is going to be insisting that we start looking to add some more characters to our railway.... not sure my wallet will be able to cope 😂
Im loving these last few nostalgia based videos youve shared with us . They got me back to thinking about my childhood. Times messing around with models trains and scalextric with my Dad in the 70s. And again with my own children in the 90s. I smiled through the whole video, but the bigggest one came when I saw your Dad almost jump to the edge of his seat when he realised what you had. 😂 Brilliant.
Thank you so much! haha, I'm a terribly nostalgic person, always looking at days gone by, its like time travel and takes me away from the day to day 😂 I am genuinely pleased these little videos also bring back fantastic and similar memories for you too! that's fantastic! 😂😂😂I'm really pleased you were able to notice my dads reaction, he was honestly just as excited as me! 😂
Nice set also reminds me of my train stuff at that time sold all my models in 1995 had a big layout in my mum and dad's loft never thought I would ever get back in to it then in 2017 bought my first items of ebay and the rest is history as they say anyway all the best 👍
Thank you Michael, Ah good old Ebay eh! i find Ebay very dangerous😂 I only go on there for a look.... next thing I know the postman has arrived ! 😂 Thanks again , all the best to you 👍
i need to get myself one of these, great starter set for a child as there’s plenty of rolling stock and a siding which is hard to come across in starter sets now
such a wonderful video , such happy memories and seeing them flow down the generations , wonder if Evie will do the same to you when you are a pensioner 🤣🤣🤣🤣 great video put a different spin on our hobby was an enjoyable watch
I think Thomas has done more for the UK model train hobby than anything, and I would assume just about all UK folks of an age had a connection to Thomas. It's great to still have an original toy from childhood.
I took the decision to use my first set, midland belle which i got as a present in thr 90s as my donor for first layout build. I toyed with the idea of leaving it in the box like you have done. It was nice to reuse a piece of nostalgia for learning new skills.
Ah the Midland Belle set, was that the LMS 0-4-0 pug set? Brilliant. Its great that you used it to build up a bigger layout, exactly as Hornby intended. Thank you for watching our video. All the very best. Martin
@@shedmouthjunction yep LMS, done a light weathering to her. Looks great. I've just used the set itself to build the layout, just to learn the skills. My son loves it.
I wish I have the old Thomas set like yours, but to be honest Hornby did stop doing Thomas and friends back in 2018 something like that which is 5 years now, I was in the 2000’s when they use to do Hornby Thomas and friends range
Hi David ! ah so Hornby stopped Thomas quite a few years back then! I didn't realize that to be honest, I knew Bachmann had kind of taken on the franchise as such but I didn't know when Hornby actually stopped. Thanks for watching the video ! All the best, Martin
It's Weird to think that in the 80s the Thomas Set was Bigger than Percy's Set with a larger layout with siding and the adition of Troublesome trucks and brakevan. But in 1990 Thomas had the Smaller set with Just Annie and Clarable and Percy had the Larger set.
Funny that... i noticed that too looking back through older catalogues. Litterally, its as if they simply swapped the locos around in the sets as you say.
Interesting recollections of the 80s. Got my first set in about ‘87, a used black Jinty and some wagons. And I had that catalogue too! I’d also agree that the original TTTE series was brilliantly done. The CGI version today is nowhere near as charming.
Hello Greg! Thanks for watching the video, there is definitely something very special about that first set or loco that started us off. Do you still have the Jinty out of interest? Ahhhh the original series of TTTE, now then, I have been busted a number of times by the missus watching those early episodes on RUclips! 😂😂
@@shedmouthjunction After our first was born I got the full run on DVD… for the kids you know! Don’t have the Jinty sadly. Looking back on it, it was a bit rough but it had great pulling power.
Worth remembering that as kids time seems longer, your hours and hours was probably in reality 30 mins 😂 hahah I think to add, Thomas... The original series... Still engages my 6yo and 2yo more than the modern ones do. Something about the use of models, just like Thunderbirds originals are way better
😂😂 So the length of time is a very similar illusion to the size of the layout 😂😂 That's a very good point! Definitely the older episodes are far better in my opinion, the last 'modern' animated one I watched the all the locos had gained some absolutely amazing suspension on the axles by the way they were bouncing around😂 .... the sort of thing that wouldn't look out of place on the Paris - Dakar rally! 😂 Ah yes Thunderbirds was EPIC!

Nice one mate; I'm a child of the 90s, used to enjoy watching Thomas the Tank Engine & friends when I was young.
Hello, thank you for watching and commenting! 👍 A little trip down memory lane for sure! 🙂
Suggestion:
We need another live!!
😂😂 it may well happen. Definitely if we ever get to the big 1k subs.. #dreaming 😂😂
@@shedmouthjunction well we shall hope it’s soon 😂😂

Haha, cheers bossman. Shame you cant make it this weekend champ
