Huston created film noir with this masterwork and then delivered it to it's final evolution with his magnificent "The Asphalt Jungle" in 1950.

Repeatedly watchable, always something new hiding in its dark corners.

The more I hear from this guy (Leonard Maltin) the more I respect his opinions.

@VisiBone Yeah, he's been around for a long time, and I've always felt he's more of a film historian than a critic, because he really has a respectful approach and deep understanding of films (and not just the new ones). I always love hearing him describe films, because he does it so beautifully. He seems to really love and admire great film-making.

The movie has such a psychological depth particular at the ending.
When she is trying to manipulation Bogart there is a look in his
eyes that is so deep and troubling that you forget that you are watching a movie. You can see him for an instance debating whether he should keep her or send her to jail.
    AMAZING!!!!

you're right! SAM IS debating that's why he says to her that's she's takin g the fall because everything inside of him wants to do the opposite! and be wise she counted on that. it's so cool that he used his heD and realized that if he'd lied for her she'd always have that to use against him

One example of how the movie dodged the censors is Spade calling Wilmer a "gunsel." The censors okayed the word because they thought it meant "gunman." It's actually slang from the San Francisco milieu where Dashiell Hammett had plied the detective trade, and it means a gay man's younger partner!

I'd sure like to see a remake of Maltese Falcon, just to pick apart the fool who would play Bogart's part. I really can't see anyone in film history up to this point who is up to the challenge. Bogart has that Sam Spade wired! Wayne Arthur

I miss old school movie critics like Leonard Maltin. Today every idiot with a RUclips account does movie reviews of basically only blockbuster tent pole movies/superhero movies and they yell their review into the camera. Screw that, I like educated film historians that teach you something with their reviews.

He liked Batman & Robin better than The Dark Knight and Crystal Skull better than Last Crusade.
But I respect his opinions too.
