    Enjoying this video now in 2022 and reading the comments I have nothing more to add except to say that I am grateful that this wonderful performance is still available for us to enjoy nine years afterwards and hopefully into the future. It is especially encouraging that the best European classical music has captured the hearts and minds of people everywhere.

    • @Alex-uy7pc
      @Alex-uy7pc Год назад +2

      European isnt the classification that matters here, this wouldn't have ever happened without Christianity. The best artwork of every genre is only achievable though Christ.
      I realize how cringe this may sound to some, but it's actually true if you have the ability to be honest, and a soul that's not degenerated enough to still see it.

    • @williamstringer6519
      @williamstringer6519 Год назад +2

      @@Alex-uy7pc Whereas I can appreciate the connection between this beautiful music and the prayerful lyrics, nevertheless the music was written by a European, and so to classify it as European music is valid. Incidentally, Wagner himself was atheist and also anti-Jewish, so his personal connection with the religious theme here is problematic to say the least. There is an enormous amount of beautiful music with absolutely no connection with religious thought, so your view is quite subjective.

      @@williamstringer6519 I have to agree with Mr. Alex. Wagner may not have been a Catholic churchgoer, but he comes from a Christian upbringing and society, he comes from the heartland of the Christian West. This is also shown by the text, which is about the pilgrimage to the eternal, spiritual homeland in accordance with God, and that was understood in the Christian Occident to Jesus Christ.
      As an adult, many become atheists in the meantime, including Richard Wagner, because the church, when things are going well, only gives spiritual nourishment from its mother's milk. However, his music shows that he must have been given heavenly fare.

    • @williamstringer6519
      @williamstringer6519 Год назад +4

      @@hermannblock4597 Of course to add to the mix, most of Wagner's operas were based on a search for the sacred through tales involving ancient Germanic gods, so although his works have strong spiritual themes, they were not exclusively Christian.

    • @hermannblock4597
      @hermannblock4597 Год назад

      @@williamstringer6519 I agree with you unreservedly. It was and is unfortunately the case that the Christian doctrine of love was only imparted to a small extent by the official churches and therefore Wagner and many other people sought their salvation in the old Germanic gods. As a result, he had little luck in his worldly affairs

Pilgrim's Chorus almost always brings a tear to my eye when I hear it performed live (and I also happen to be Jewish). Raw music itself cannot be antisemitic. I'm not devaluing his creation or talent, I'm simply making a comment on his moral character and how our modern view on race and musical ability has shifted. It's pretty hard to defend Wagner as a "good person" by today's standards considering the antisemitic themes throughout his operas and fervent desire to stomp out Jewish musicians, even if he attempted to "purify" a close Jewish friend through a forced baptism. That is my belief, but that doesn't change the power of Wagner's music or its value. Please avoid creating assumptions about others without engaging in some sort of dialogue, we're all just trying to share and enjoy beautiful music :).

    Choral intonation and tone occasionally suffer, but normally this work is quite well-performed. The conductor is excellent. All aspects are under him and it all shines. I also love all the conducting gestures he employs. His conducting patterns and gestures remind me of myself somewhat, but also those of Linda R. Hall and especially those of The Maestro Eugene Ormandy. Bravo!

    Спето великолепно. Единственное, что смущает - численность хора паломников. Почти корпус, в любом случае - несколько батальонов.

    - Coro dos peregrinos -
    Através de penitência e arrependimento que eu tenho propiciou
    O senhor, a quem meu coração serve,
