Great explanation about what Steering Committees do. I think I've been on a few projects that didn't have steering committees so nobody designated there to remove those roadblocks or make those higher level decisions. Definitely makes the process less efficient and slower.
@kmah31ify in order to eliminate status meetings or at least minimize them (they do have a time a place) you need to replace the meeting with another outlet. This could be a newsletter, common project site or a simple comment column in a project action plan. Making the switch needs a bit of planning and building of replacement concepts so you can use meetings for what they really need to be used for...approvals, issue resolution, brainstorming, concept creation and training.
