Don Rickles was a great comedian. The key was he wasn't mean spirited. He was against bigotry and he thought it was all nonsense, so he made fun of it. A great friend of his was a black bartender. He said once he'd become successful, he'll come back and give him a job, and he did. The man was his bodyguard. Rickles made sure to make fun of everyone equally but importantly to get us to laugh at ourselves. (He even made fun of himself.) He never looked at his jokes as "insults". He saw them as giving a put-on, exaggerations, and ribs. He sometimes felt uncomfortable when ppl tried to do what he did, because it has to be part of your personality and sometimes they crossed a line. He apologized to his audiences at the end of his shows just in case he rubbed anyone the wrong way. And his reputation off-stage was being one of the nicest ppl u could ever meet in showbiz. He had a lot of friends and he was a family man. :)
The thing about Don Rickles is he made fun of every group equally.
He ended every one of his stand up comedy shows celebrating diversity and all of humanity.
He was so quick...there was no one like him. Lightning quick.
Don Rickles was the one guy that should roast you at a Friar's Roast. It was a sign that you made it to the big time. Celebrity roasts were never the same since he passed.
It was considered an honor to get roasted by Don Rickles. He insulted everyone by race & by cultural stereotypes equally. No one was safe. Off stage he was a very kind man and very respectful of everyone he met.
Don Rickles is a Legend!!!!
A phenomenal comic…and a very loving, respectful man in his private life!! ❤️
He's the most funniest 😂. He roasts everyone equally 😂. Love him ❤. I hate cancel culture. They're insane.
Don was a crowd work comic. It's an old art of comedy
He loved black people, and Asian people, he always made it known that he went for the joke, not the person. Tough line to try to walk, but for his day and age, and for who he was off stage, too, he did it much better than most
You should watch the movie Kelly's Heroes - Clint Eastwood WW2 film, which features Don Rickles.
It was long considered, that one who was insulted by Don Rickles, was a true blessing and an honor. Although he never meant any insult he made during his routines.
Phyllis Diller (far right on the dais) was actually very nice looking. That crazy hair and makeup were part of her shtick as making fun of her was part of Don's shtick. She was also a powerhouse of a stand-up comic. And a groundbreaker, too, being that there were very few female stand-up comics in those days. Also she was an accomplished painter and pianist. But my favorite thing about Phyllis Diller was her laugh. I've heard a lot of different laughs in my day, and I still think she had the funniest laugh ever in show business. I definitely recommend you check out some Phyllis Diller stand-up. If you're interested, I'll find some links to some of her sets.
His "hostility " was all an act.
Every comedian in the US ached to have Don Rickles give them a snarky remark of some sort. He was the king of the Catskills, the Commodore of insults, and will be greatly missed.
Im not sure if snarky is the right word because he was like a crazy bear attack and you laughed at him like a relative on the loose XD he was a loveable curmudgeon.
The "anger" at being repeated was part of his act. Entertainers jumped at the opportunity to be insulted by Don.
Today’s Don Rickles is Bill Burr. However, Bill rarely interacts with the audience EXCEPT for his famous rant to the audience in Philadelphia. They started booing him after a few minutes and he refused to get off the stage and ranted at the audience for the whole time he was paid for. It was incredible how he kept going and going with one insult after another. Anyway, great reactions 😂😂😂😂😂
close to the 3 min mark with the small black kid. Reason why Don said what he said was that the kid has growth problem, he'll never grow to a normal height
He was a great insult comic.
Jesus Love 2 ya!!! Love!!! ♥
From the 1960s through the 1980s, a common theme in comedy was to openly talk about racial stereotypes. People were aware of these stereotypes but would never discuss them in public, so to hear someone talk about them publicly was shocking. A lot of comedians would play on this shock to get a laugh, and Don Rickles was a master at it. Humor has moved on from that, and simply making a comment involving a racial stereotype today is more likely to provoke anger than shocked laughter.
He always respected everyone while he said this. Now this is considered bad, tough move forward an live. Keep laughing smiling all.
Hey Loud Guys - you should really consider watching a series in Band of Brothers. Just a suggestion and once a week.
Our game of thrones be great also
Please react to Jim Gaffigan
RIP Rickles
Love y'all
Check out the awesome Documentary on Don Rickles SHARE THE WARMTH
I think that really funny things happen when the whole world isn’t watching.
Please react to Jim Gaffigan. He’s a gentleman comedian, polar opposite of Don Rickles.
Id say its Rodney.
😂😂😂
Fight cancel culture if you want to have laughter in your life.
💯
Poor video placement
Greg Giraldo (R.I.P.)roasting everyone Is next level
Greg Giraldo was hilarious! Definitely the funniest on every roast show he was a part of.
