Great episode. Glad you picked up that chair and lugged it home - quite a find. A few years ago either the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal had a great article on the inventor who invented and initially marketed the portable work bench you mentioned. The marketing was the hardest part for the inventor, until he was finally able to sell the invention to a large manufacturer. This occurred after it became very clear that a lucrative market existed for such a device among DIYers in Great Britain, where he lived and worked. He retired to one of the Channel Islands, where I believe he died about ten or more years ago. The article I saw may have been an extended obituary for this mechanical genius who invented this portable work bench, which was designed so that it could be folded up and stored in a relatively small closet until needed.

The workmate is a great tool. My father in law gave me one the year I was married in 1989 and I still have it and still use it. It’s a great portable work bench.
The snap on pliers look as if they were made somewhere way way east of Kenosha and laser etched poorly. German tools are hard to fault, except for the premium price of most of them the one’s I use from Knipex, NWS, and Gedore are perfect. Maybe not to the finish on vintage USA brands but very hard to beat, especially in a market flooded with junk. Klenk makes superior aviation snips and though I don’t use my pairs as much as I used to, if anyone asks to borrow them I hand them some Wiss, which are nothing like they were. As usual, great info!
Loved the video! I saw snoopy on the shelf. I was very dissapointed in the pliers. German made stuff is really nice. The Klenk was cool. Funny, I always do the same thing with my spray cans. I learn alot from your videos. Possums are cool
The Workmates are a great addition to any shop. Dad gave me one with the aluminum frame many years ago. I put a new top on it and have used it for all kinds of jobs away from the shop. I put it in the truck and took it everywhere. I have at least one in every workspace now. I gave one to Ryan too. That way I don't have to load one up if I'm going there to help on a project. Good tips on the paint. I will have to try warming the paint and parts. When I was painting motorcycles I would pull the nozzle and drop it in a jar of laquer thinner after painting. The next time I painted I would put the nozzle back in. That had another advantage some cans had different shaped spray patterns and I could swap nozzles. Fan spray for larger area and spot for frames and narrow sections. I have a knock off Klenk screwdriver. The flip joint is broken, but it still is a great design. It will be a challenge to try and make a new flip joint section. Another great mosh. Thanks John. 😎😎

Haha I’ve had the same exact feelings when buying snap on pliers. I even tried to warranty the rough forging marks, with no luck. Don’t even start on their too tight to open functionality. Ha. Great mosh. Thanks John.

'Gedore' is a brand I have held in esteem. My dad's workshop was tooled with Gedore and Hazett, the other very good German tool maker. The Snap-On pliers is a shame, it probably is from an out sourced factory overseas as they do nowadays. I have a Black&Decker Workmate, which I bought 8 years ago for just NZ $10 from someone who was cleaning out. I have not had a chance to use it and this spring I too am cleaning out, so there goes!
I think you gotta go over and knock on their door and introduce yourself. Maybe they'll let you walk around the house and pick some stuff out before it hits the curb.

Good episode today I really enjoyed it. I've had two workmates my whole life, wore the first one out and I've had the second one 22 years. As far as the Snap-on pliers I would take them back to the Snap-on truck and get a new set. That is well below the Snap-on standards that we are used to!
Hey John, great video. I still have the Workmate I bought in 1979. Everything still works great due to my yearly cleaning. It’s one of the best tools I ever bought. I was disappointed with the Snap On tool. The Snap On company used to stand for quality! I love the Wilton vise. Great function and I love the color!!! Have a good week!
I have 2 sizes of the older Black and Decker Workmates that came from my uncles garage. They have already come in handy and I have had them less than a month. Mine still have the orange pieces on the top used to help clamp things in place.

Couldn't agree more on the pliers. Japanese & German are nearly always significantly better. With Amazon and other online retailers they're often at or below comparable domestic brands. I recently bought a pair of Channellock dikes & needlenose locally & they're both just bad. I can't get the dikes to loosen up, I thoroughly washed/oiled them with a few different products, while working the action hard... & they're still very stiff. The Needlenose hatching/knurling has worn smooth very quickly as well as the cutters showing really significant wear. I've used them a fair bit, but only home use tinkering & no abuse. I really want to buy U.S. made, and I've always considered Channellock to be about the minimum quality plier I want to buy, but very acceptable given their price point. I still really like their XL & XXL Tongue & Grooves but I don't think I'd buy any of their other products. I've always had very good experiences with Klein but I've heard guys complaining of very stiff actions too. Ah well.
Adam- A while back I did a video on loosening up a pair of pliers, I used Lapping compound and it worked however getting all of it out once it is loose is another problem! LOL
@@ScoutCrafter That sounds like a good idea. Unfortunately I don't have any. I do have some heavy duty rubbing compound though. Probably a bit light but I'll mix up a slurry of it and a bit of silicone & see how it goes. Thanks for the tip!
Unbelieveable snap on finish .... Love that screwdriver John , thought went into that design , can we really compare anything against German made ? It's always top quality ... I'm thinking about candying a pipe wrench handle recess you'll see shortly if I do or not ...... Great show !!
Jim- The best part of competition is keeping manufacturers on their toes. If I am spending top dollar on a tool I don't want any manufacturing steps skipped! =D
I used to buy Snap On, but I felt the quality of the tool did not come close to the price they asking, so I drifted away from them and most of the, what I call, truck vendors and really started to look at flea market and garage sale tools and have had decent luck with that approach, of course sometimes you have no choice but to go to a vendor because of the need for a specialized tool. As of late I have purchased a few tools from Harbor freight and have been, for the most part, pleasantly surprised by durability and finish of the tools. I am going to give your paint method a try, it looks great. Thanks for the video sir.
Hi Mr. John! The red on the vise was the right choice after seeing the green... the green looks good..but that red just pops.. the snap on is a nuts... and sad. You pay that kind of money...quality should never come to question much less be questioned...smh.... good stuff!
I picked up an early original silver collapsible B&D Workmate for £15 and a local junk shop and was thrilled with my purchase. I'll have to give it a Scoutmaster refurb on it one day, maybe give all the aluminium (not aluminum) a nice shine.

It was a bit confusing as the paint was shown as an anodized. I figured it was just a descriptive name. Did you girlfriend claim the chair?? Very nice chair. I had a first generation Workmate. Can kick myself. When we left CT, I gave mine to my neighbor because we were moving into a condo. Cool screwdriver especially your HHeros reference. Your references may go over many peoples heads. Unfortunately Snap-On has out sourced a majority of its tool manufacturing. I retired in 1996 my last purchases from Snap-On where still made in USA. Though they are true to their lifetime guarantee. My tools where mostly the Industrial finish though I would have to say almost half where chrome finish as well. Their Industrial finish was black and light casting surface still nice to hold in your hands. Those pliers I would have refused to purchase from the dealer.
I wonder if that snap on tool was kicked around in the delivery truck. I remember snap on being sold out of a special van/truck. I don't even know if they sell them out of trucks anymore. Also, Werner Klemperer had an orchestra conductor father (Otto Klemperer) and an opera singer mother (Johanna Geisler) . Besides his other credits, he sang at the Metropolitan Opera for many seasons. Hi Scoutcrafter those Snap On plyers are kind of ruff. I used to buy a lot of Snap On tools and they were always great quality but I see their screw drivers now have those rubber handles that are always dirty and split the old ones were way better.

The other top quality pliers to check out if you don't already have any are from Sweden - Lindstrom - they only make small pliers as far as I know, for electronics and that kind of thing.
Before I go on with the rest of the video I'll tell you exactly what I think. If I bought an overpriced pair of Snap-on pliers that looked like that I would return them and never buy from them again......I gotta admit that I've never been a Snap-on fan though.
I wonder if “Made in US” will ever be what it once was? I have a sad feeling that big corporations trying to drive profit would not allow for the level of quality we used to expect. Nice find on the Workmate. I have three of them and I love them.
Totally agree with you. That’s why I shop for tools in thrift stores, looking for USA made tools from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s. They were made with pride in mind, not profit.

It's sad that a top quality UStool should be this way.ive noticed that even used Snap on tools are expensive. Your paint tips are useful. I've wondered about Duplicolor paint use besides their automotive uses. Thanks for saving the nice chair. I know one guy can only so much to save valuable stuff at the poor man's flea market, and appreciate what you do. Good idea to use it upstate. A 425 workmates would really be helpful in my shop. Keeping my eyes open for one.

I think that laser etched lettering is now endemic in the tool industry for a lot of tools but for a $70 pair of pliers I would at least like to see some properly engraved lettering...l know I ask for too much lol
They started making paint cans that “spray at any angle” so you can’t turn them upside down to clean them anymore. I always spray the tip with carb cleaner and it works great. Haven’t had one clog on me since. That Metalcast paint is pretty cool, so was that Klenk screwdriver. I love finding obscure things like that. OMG that is the healthiest looking possum I’ve ever seen! Looks like he just got back from the groomers. They always look like dirty drowned rats here. 😆🤣😂 Take care
Thanks so much for all the tips and tricks to salvage and restore hand tools and equipment. Everyone should go full "ScoutCrafter" on at least one tool. It will help you spot a tool worth saving at a garage sale, estate sale, or auction. You will have a good idea as to the amount of work it will take to make it a "user" or a "show tool". After watching the channel for a while you'll gain the knowledge to spot the quality tools on a table full of mystery made tools. There's nothing like the ability to discuss the finer points of screwdriver construction.
That Wilton vise tho. Too nice I'd never use it after that resto! I have many of my dad's Snap-on tools and I myself have been buying them for 30 years. But as of the last 10 or so I've stopped. Their brand quality has definitely dropped off and I'm disappointed. Even their toolboxes have been compromised; their sheetmetal and hardware are junk. But you can bet their prices are still outrageous. Nope. No more. And Their competition is getting better and better.
You know Mike, I grew up with Craftsman and it was fine for my abilities but you are right, the new Snap-On isn't like the old Snap-On. Matco, BlackHawk and other companies kept them honest!

If purchased on line is it possible they’re a fake or knock off? If someone was going to have their tools copied then S-O would have to be a prime candidate. I buy Knippex tools new when I can afford them and to me they’re worth the money but I also get them used and it’s rare to find them damaged or unrepairable. They usually just need a good clean. Hi Stuart- I've heard of Snap-On electronics getting copied but never their pliers... I don't know. A few subscribers chimed in that they have had bad fit and finish experiences with Snap-On also. Snap On tools have always been out of my price range and even when I see them at steam shows I leave them for the collectors. =D
That vise looks great, but you gotta fix the jaw damage. If you don’t want to make new ones, what about milling a V in the damage (if the jaw sticks out far enough from the body) and then put one on the opposing jaw to hold round vertically. Cheers

I think snap on these days is overhyped, they used to be good, but over the years their quality has gone downhill. It’s a shame. I had a friend who knew a guy who warranted a snap on breaker bar 3 times on the same project, then he picked up a craftsman breaker bar and it did the trick.
The Klenk is Cool, I particularly like the Locking and not just some Spring Detent that doesn't hold its position........Warming the paint & part will change one's life forever (or at least make for a better paint job).
I bought the same SO pair about 8 years ago and bought several other types since from SO. THAT pair is NOT representative! For most things I use SO and Knipex both.
Wow! Those Snap-on pliers are pathetic. They should never have made it past QA/QC. I love my workmate. I have an old countertop clamped in it and that's my daily use workbench. I've got a couple shades of Wingnut Blue I use, but now you're gonna force me to get that Duplicolor Blue
Thanks so much for that spray nozzle tip with the thinner I used to do the upside down thing but man does it waste a lot of paint and I always thought that snap on tools are kind of a waste of money too I mean if you can get a good deal on them at Jacktown or your tool meets go for it but I would never pay full retail for sure 👌
If those are new pliers and I paid that much and I received that pair I would return them as used. To me that’s unacceptable. Even buying cheap stuff from Harbor Freight does not look as bad as the pictures you showed. In fact their higher end stuff is pretty good (mostly).

The Snap-On pliers are surprisingly bad looking. I wonder if they were a factory second that was smuggled out of the factory. Or maybe they are knockoffs?
The snap on pliers fit and finish isn’t very nice, the modern snap on pliers are laser cut steel and there is little to no finishing work done sadly. At least the steel and warranty is top notch.
I had an early model Workmate. Loved it. Had to leave it when I moved last time(along with my shop crane and several shop stationary tools, bummer). Hated that. Have to get another one sometime. Great work.

Great show tonight, the snapon pliers are a disgrace especially for what they cost, but just to say I like the tip of cleaning the spray can nozzle after use but here in England Q Tips,plastic straws and plastic drink stirrers are all banned by the government to aid the fight against single use plastic waste, it was estimated that in this country alone 1.8 billion plastic stemmed cotton buds were used each year so the ban was put in place to protect the environment and oceans, we also most unfortunately don't have possums in England so I love watching the one you show at the end.
When you're buying Snap On you expect the best quality. I don't understand how they can allow that to happen. those pliers look like the were stamped out and never finished. Unacceptable. I have had a pair of Workmate 125 I have had for 30 years and they are excelent.
Hello Puneet- Gedore has been headquartered in Germany for over 230 years and over the last few decades have opened plants in other parts of the world like UK, South Africa and other locations. You are absolutely right as I believe all their pliers and cutters are made in Austria. As of yet I have never heard any complaints about the quality of Austria produced tools. Thanks!!!!!

I still really like their XL & XXL Tongue & Grooves but I don't think I'd buy any of their other products. I've always had very good experiences with Klein but I've heard guys complaining of very stiff actions too.

Adam- A while back I did a video on loosening up a pair of pliers, I used Lapping compound and it worked however getting all of it out once it is loose is another problem! LOL

Unfortunately I don't have any. I do have some heavy duty rubbing compound though. Probably a bit light but I'll mix up a slurry of it and a bit of silicone & see how it goes.

Jim- The best part of competition is keeping manufacturers on their toes. If I am spending top dollar on a tool I don't want any manufacturing steps skipped! =D
I was given a work mate for Christmas the first year they came out. It weighs a ton. Nice instructions on the paint.
LOL- It IS heavy! This one is over 40 pounds! My shoulder was killing me after the first three blocks! LOL
I used to buy Snap On, but I felt the quality of the tool did not come close to the price they asking, so I drifted away from them and most of the, what I call, truck vendors and really started to look at flea market and garage sale tools and have had decent luck with that approach, of course sometimes you have no choice but to go to a vendor because of the need for a specialized tool. As of late I have purchased a few tools from Harbor freight and have been, for the most part, pleasantly surprised by durability and finish of the tools. I am going to give your paint method a try, it looks great. Thanks for the video sir.
Terry- I never bought truck tools because I wanted to be able to replace the tool if it broke at a store. The old Craftsman days spoiled me. =D
Hi Mr. John! The red on the vise was the right choice after seeing the green... the green looks good..but that red just pops.. the snap on is a nuts... and sad. You pay that kind of money...quality should never come to question much less be questioned...smh.... good stuff!

I picked up an early original silver collapsible B&D Workmate for £15 and a local junk shop and was thrilled with my purchase. I'll have to give it a Scoutmaster refurb on it one day, maybe give all the aluminium (not aluminum) a nice shine.
All Snap on tools really should look the part . For what they cost , They should shine like a diamond in a goats a#@

John, very interesting discussion. No excuse for this especially from SnapOn at their prices. Thanks for the review of the paint. I really liked the vise color so looked up the paint. It was a bit confusing as the paint was shown as an anodized. I figured it was just a descriptive name. Did you girlfriend claim the chair?? Very nice chair. I had a first generation Workmate. Can kick myself. When we left CT, I gave mine to my neighbor because we were moving into a condo. Cool screwdriver especially your HHeros reference. Your references may go over many peoples heads. A few video’s ago you mentioned the pucker factor. Boy I got a good chuckle. I’m sure many didn’t even catch it. Great video as usual.

You and me both. I bought a folding Northern Tool portable bench. Not so heavy and very sturdy.
Unfortunately Snap-On has out sourced a majority of its tool manufacturing. I retired in 1996 my last purchases from Snap-On where still made in USA. Though they are true to their lifetime guarantee. My tools where mostly the Industrial finish though I would have to say almost half where chrome finish as well. Their Industrial finish was black and light casting surface still nice to hold in your hands. Those pliers I would have refused to purchase from the dealer.
Snap on: instead of saying, "made in the USA" it should say, " Obviously not made in Taiwan". Great video!!

I wonder if that snap on tool was kicked around in the delivery truck. I remember snap on being sold out of a special van/truck. I don't even know if they sell them out of trucks anymore. Also, Werner Klemperer had an orchestra conductor father (Otto Klemperer) and an opera singer mother (Johanna Geisler) . Besides his other credits, he sang at the Metropolitan Opera for many seasons. Anyway...great screwdriver and excellent painting tips! Love that possum! Thanks, John!

Hi Scoutcrafter those Snap On plyers are kind of ruff. I used to buy a lot of Snap On tools and they were always great quality but I see their screw drivers now have those rubber handles that are always dirty and split the old ones were way better.

The other top quality pliers to check out if you don't already have any are from Sweden - Lindstrom - they only make small pliers as far as I know, for electronics and that kind of thing.
Before I go on with the rest of the video I'll tell you exactly what I think. If I bought an overpriced pair of Snap-on pliers that looked like that I would return them and never buy from them again......I gotta admit that I've never been a Snap-on fan though.
My sentiments exactly. I have never bought Snap-On because of the price. That tool gives "Made in USA" z bad name.

Totally agree with you. That’s why I shop for tools in thrift stores, looking for USA made tools from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s. They were made with pride in mind, not profit.
Thanks for your diplomatic comment about Snap on pliers. This is the kind of attention getting commentary they need to make improvements. It's sad that a top quality UStool should be this way.ive noticed that even used Snap on tools are expensive. Your paint tips are useful. I've wondered about Duplicolor paint use besides their automotive uses. Thanks for saving the nice chair. I know one guy can only so much to save valuable stuff at the poor man's flea market, and appreciate what you do. Good idea to use it upstate. A 425 workmates would really be helpful in my shop. Keeping my eyes open for one.

OMG!! Snap-on has become a disgrace. I prefer HF tools. At least you are not overpaying for crap and my expectations are not very high. Thanks for the Metalcast demo. Does it help durability by spraying a clear coat or does it harm the finish? Jim
I think that laser etched lettering is now endemic in the tool industry for a lot of tools but for a $70 pair of pliers I would at least like to see some properly engraved lettering...l know I ask for too much lol

They started making paint cans that “spray at any angle” so you can’t turn them upside down to clean them anymore. I always spray the tip with carb cleaner and it works great. Haven’t had one clog on me since. That Metalcast paint is pretty cool, so was that Klenk screwdriver. I love finding obscure things like that.

Thanks so much for all the tips and tricks to salvage and restore hand tools and equipment. Everyone should go full "ScoutCrafter" on at least one tool. It will help you spot a tool worth saving at a garage sale, estate sale, or auction. You will have a good idea as to the amount of work it will take to make it a "user" or a "show tool".
After watching the channel for a while you'll gain the knowledge to spot the quality tools on a table full of mystery made tools. There's nothing like the ability to discuss the finer points of screwdriver construction.
That Wilton vise tho. Too nice I'd never use it after that resto!
I have many of my dad's Snap-on tools and I myself have been buying them for 30 years. But as of the last 10 or so I've stopped. Their brand quality has definitely dropped off and I'm disappointed. Even their toolboxes have been compromised; their sheetmetal and hardware are junk. But you can bet their prices are still outrageous. Nope. No more. And Their competition is getting better and better.
You know Mike, I grew up with Craftsman and it was fine for my abilities but you are right, the new Snap-On isn't like the old Snap-On. Matco, BlackHawk and other companies kept them honest!

Love that NY “Haa” at 14:03 Scout😂. I’m curious to know where your friend bought his Snap-on pliers because I really can’t see Snap-on letting something that poorly made past QC. If purchased on line is it possible they’re a fake or knock off? If someone was going to have their tools copied then S-O would have to be a prime candidate. I buy Knippex tools new when I can afford them and to me they’re worth the money but I also get them used and it’s rare to find them damaged or unrepairable. They usually just need a good clean. Hi Stuart- I've heard of Snap-On electronics getting copied but never their pliers... I don't know. A few subscribers chimed in that they have had bad fit and finish experiences with Snap-On also. Snap On tools have always been out of my price range and even when I see them at steam shows I leave them for the collectors. =D

That vise looks great, but you gotta fix the jaw damage. If you don’t want to make new ones, what about milling a V in the damage (if the jaw sticks out far enough from the body) and then put one on the opposing jaw to hold round vertically. Cheers
The chip is right above the screw hole, an unfortunate design weakness. I don't have the brass stock but will come across some shortly for new jaws!

I think snap on these days is overhyped, they used to be good, but over the years their quality has gone downhill. It’s a shame. I had a friend who knew a guy who warranted a snap on breaker bar 3 times on the same project, then he picked up a craftsman breaker bar and it did the trick.
The Klenk is Cool, I particularly like the Locking and not just some Spring Detent that doesn't hold its position........Warming the paint & part will change one's life forever (or at least make for a better paint job).
I'm surprised they don't add that to the label of the paint! =D

You do not weld? The vise has a small hole and I can stand it! It is so easy to weld it! I never see you use a welder?
That chip is right above the screw hole (a weak spot) I don't have a welder, I used to have access to one at work but that was years ago. =D
I bought the same SO pair about 8 years ago and bought several other types since from SO. THAT pair is NOT representative! For most things I use SO and Knipex both.

I love my workmate. I have an old countertop clamped in it and that's my daily use workbench.

Thanks so much for that spray nozzle tip with the thinner I used to do the upside down thing but man does it waste a lot of paint and I always thought that snap on tools are kind of a waste of money too I mean if you can get a good deal on them at Jacktown or your tool meets go for it but I would never pay full retail for sure 👌
If those are new pliers and I paid that much and I received that pair I would return them as used. To me that’s unacceptable. Even buying cheap stuff from Harbor Freight does not look as bad as the pictures you showed. In fact their higher end stuff is pretty good (mostly).

The snap on pliers fit and finish isn’t very nice, the modern snap on pliers are laser cut steel and there is little to no finishing work done sadly. At least the steel and warranty is top notch.

Great show tonight, the snapon pliers are a disgrace especially for what they cost, but just to say I like the tip of cleaning the spray can nozzle after use but here in England Q Tips,plastic straws and plastic drink stirrers are all banned by the government to aid the fight against single use plastic waste, it was estimated that in this country alone 1.8 billion plastic stemmed cotton buds were used each year so the ban was put in place to protect the environment and oceans, we also most unfortunately don't have possums in England so I love watching the one you show at the end.
I've been using your hot water tip for spray paint cans myself for years, works great less clogging too.
The flow is so much better, they really should ad that to the instructions on the can. =D
When you're buying Snap On you expect the best quality. I don't understand how they can allow that to happen. those pliers look like the were stamped out and never finished.

Just received a SnapOn ratchet and it is perfect.

You are absolutely right as I believe all their pliers and cutters are made in Austria. As of yet I have never heard any complaints about the quality of Austria produced tools. Thanks!!!!!
