Excellent video. I had no idea canned air can be used as a refrigerant. Thanks a lot.

from all the videos i have seen people found that everything on modern made in china junk is cheapened so the coils fail from being too thin the circuit boards have bad solder joints or parts burn out seems like they are just made to last till warranty runs out. so did this Frankenstein model hold up is it still running?

@@ranger178 Yes, it’s still running! However, the original evaporator coil did finally start leaking bad enough to really be an issue. I sprayed soapy water on it and it looked like a dog foaming at the mouth. It had probably a dozen leaks. Fortunately I was able to source a coil of very similar size to replace it that works well enough but is just a bit short on BTU capacity as it has less fins per inch so it’ll freeze up if the basement gets below about 64.
The original coil was complete garbage. The copper was so thin you could easily squeeze the tubing shut with your fingers. I kid you not. Just total junk.

Very nice! That runs very well and it does look like you got the charge spot-on. The Embraco unit you have there is going to have a long life lightly loaded. Those are good compressors in general.
It's amazing how much water is in the air, when you think about it.
The issues with flooding back can be helped with a small suction accumulator, if that had been a serious problem.
Thanks for sharing this with us!

Thank you for the comment, David. I was about to make up an accumulator but after adjusting cap tube length and going up in diameter from .049 to .052 I realized that I just had too much displacement and not enough heat transfer for the R290. The data proves you can’t stuff 6000 btu through a 4000 btu coil.
The initial R152A test was just a whim before I added the accumulator and the system performance just dropped right into line. Obviously it’s not ideal but I’m amazed it works as well as it does.

I have had EVERY Dehumidifier purchased from Costco in the last 10 years fail. None have lasted more than 2 seasons. Recently, 2 Midea 50 pint cube dehumidifiers purchased in 2022 have failed within 2 weeks of each other. One was completely icing up and the other simply stopped dehumidifying no matter what setting was selected. The only saving grace was that Costco accepted both returns and refunded the purchase price.

@@reedgrele6673 They are ALL junk these days. The copper tubing in the coils is literally paper thin and of poor quality. It takes very little for filiform corrosion to set in and turn the coil into Swiss cheese. Google “filiform corrosion copper” and you’ll learn a lot. That’s why the old school dehumidifiers with the smooth aluminum tubing coils lasted forever. The aluminum isn’t subject to that type of corrosion.

You seem very knowledgeable with these things, What will happen if I put a normal dehumidifier in a hot 60 degrees Celsius room with about 80% humidity, do you know what will fail and why will it fail, I cannot find an answer anywhere on the net. Will the evaporator get too hot? Maybe the pipes will have over pressure? What do you think might be done to a dehumidifier in order to work at 60 deg effectively?

So in essence you made a dehumidifier that was as good as a 70's one, maybe better.
