  • Showing off the box joint jig that used to be for sale at woodgears.ca/bo.... Selling these jigs was an experiment between John Heisz and myself, but there wasn't a price that was both right for the consumer and reasonable for making them. Read more about it at the link.

    I've seen this jig many times, but never knew how it was used until now. Pure genius from the mind of Matthias..

    This is probably the best instructional video on how to use Matthias' amazing, but complex jig. I'm compiling some setup notes/guide for me to remember what I've learned from watching each video a half dozen times or more if anyone wants a copy.

    I totally understand not being able to make enough for the amount of work that goes into building it. I would buy one because I don't have the time to build one myself and the small amount of time in my shop is precious. Great work.

    Can you please do a video on how you built your out feed table and wing extension on your delta table saw? Really looks awesome!

  • @froglives
    @froglives 12 лет назад +2

    By my rough calculations it would take me two weekends to build this, at my minimum cash labor rate, (you would have to twist my arm pretty hard, and I would have to love the project to work that cheap) this would cost me about $800.00 before plans and materials. The $300.00 that was charged for a hand crafted piece or art like this would of been a steal.
    If they go up for sale again I want one.

  • @stepheny33

    Talking about glueing... Lee Valley recommends putting the box together perfectly square as a dry fit and squeezing their Chair Doctor glue into the joint. The runny nature of that glue fills the joints and creates a strong bond. The advantages are obvious. You can take your time with the assembly and still have a nice tight fit like your first attempt on this video.

  • @matthiaswandel

    There wasn't a price that allowed John to make a decent income at it yet still be a price that was reasonable for such a jig. You pretty much have to manufacture stuff in low wage countries to hit the price point that people expect.

    Matthias, first off, I love your videos and projects. Never miss one! It's also super cool to see clips of the growing family.
    I bought the plans for this and built it this week. The jig is beautiful and the plans were very well put together. My only right now is that the main gear seems to flex a bit and slips sometimes. I think the likely issue is tooth fit and I'm going to take the drive gears off and refine the teeth a bit more, but Matthias, if you have suggestions for improving the ride of the gears other than filing the gear teeth down, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

    If it was me I would be happy to pay between £70- £100 for a well made jig like that. Sorry if that seems low - I don't know how long these take to make. Considering the time it would take me to make it, the materials and tools I would need to buy etc. Very very nice piece of kit.

  • @bogus_not_me
    @bogus_not_me 5 лет назад

    It looks to me like you should move the saw blade down a bit to make the fingers shorter, so they fit more closely. If they overlap even 1/16 inch your box would shrink. You would have to cut every piece long, make the joint, trim to fit, then cut every piece to length after fitting the joint together. Nice idea for a jig but a bit more work than needed. ..

    Sorry to post on this old video, I was wondering though are the plans for this particular Jig? I see the plans for your other Jig and I checked out the plans from John's site for his jig. I'm curious though if this joint effort is sort of a best of both worlds thing, or if it was just designed simpler for mass production.
    I do like the idea of building it out of plywood since it seems thicknesses would be more consistent, not sure if that's at all an issue anyway though.

  • @MikeGusFifteen
    @MikeGusFifteen 9 лет назад +4

    So I just had an idea; what if instead of using electrical tape to mark where to stop on the gear, you drilled small holes lining up on and between each tooth and used a small piece of dowel to indicate the locations to stop? It's a lot of holes but it feels like a more permanent solution.

  • @ClownWhisper

    I have been thinking about building this. I actually made something similar without the gears All of the cranking with no gear reduction is a pain so I really dont use it.
    This is a far better design with the gear reduction.

  • @sb-1

    Hi Matthias, I bought your plans, and I'm starting to make the parts, but I'm using baltic birch, like john heisz did. It looks like he mounted his t-nut directly on the stock holding box, without making a plywood piece to be properly located later. Is there any downside to that? Also are there any problems you can see with using plywood - my front & back rail and stock holding box base thickness is more like 3.75 cm instead of 3.6cm.
    It seems like john heisz used box joints for his stock holding box. I was going to use rabbets and splines like you...any problems with that plan (using the baltic birch)? Thank you, and thanks for all your interesting work!

    I tested your demo version of the gear generator and I'm thinking about buying it. Creating gears in 3dsmax on my own didn't really go smooth enough and it was distracting from the actual project. Cheers.

    I'm really thinking about buying the plans for this awesome jig, however there is no chance that I will be using an Imperial threaded rod 'cause I'm used to working in metric and imperial sized stuff is hard to get around here.
    What are the consequences for the design if i use a metric rod? Will I need other sprockets? I'm thinking I don't but would like to be sure :'D

    • @matthiaswandel
      @matthiaswandel  8 лет назад +11

      If you use a metric threaded rod, then it's better to work in metric. The spacing table generator works in metric and in inches.

    I wonder: How reliably could these box joints be held together without any glue, by simply driving a long dowel (or 1-2 finish nails) from top to bottom? If so, would speed things up!

    • @womaninwood9177
      @womaninwood9177 4 года назад

      That makes no sense! Box joints are so strong because they glue-join the length-grain (maybe I don't know the right word for it) of both pieces together.
