GOP war on drag? CNN meets those caught in the crosshairs of America's latest civil rights movement

Tennessee became the first US state to restrict drag performances, putting it at the forefront of a Republican-led effort to ban drag in at least 18 states. Sponsors of the bill claim they're trying to protect minors, falsely equating sometimes bawdy events in adult-only venues with family-friendly performances at libraries. But critics say it is an attempt by conservatives to generate public fear, which is then leveraged to enact legal restrictions on the LGBTQ community, pointing to more than 400 republican-sponsored anti LGBTQ+ bills introduced in state legislatures in 2023, many of which seek to strip the rights of transgender Americans.
