And this is why no other actor can even come close to Michael Crawford's magnificent, majestic Phantom. It's as if he was describing a real, living being. And so he was, because Mr. Crawford brought the Phantom to life every single time he portrayed him.

Others have played the Phantom of the Opera on stage. Michael Crawford not only created him, he LIVED him - and that's the difference.

I must admit I have a newfound respect for michael crawford by watching some of his interviews. He really is a great actor.

The man never fails to amaze me with how much he does his research - regarding the characters he plays. And in "The Phantom of the Opera", I know he may not have an operatic voice (although certain aspects of Michael's voice, no one has ever been able to touch. That gentleness and "angelic"-like quality to it) but the way he played the character and describes it - he brings the character to life in a way no one, except for Lon Chaney, has before. Both brought both sides of the character to life.

I am almost always moved to tears by his rendition of Reprise - All I ask of you.... where he’s pleading, where he’s expressing his longing.
It always tugs at my heart and I can totally relate to his portrayal of his character.
I guess nearly 3 years of doing that night in and out was tiring, and to put yourself through that roller coaster of emotion can wear you down. His interviews through the beginning to his final - you can see the wear in his eyes.
    Consummate performer. ❤️.
Love this man unabashedly. His work ethic, his commitment. I wished he did the movie.
I’d ask him how difficult it was to be typecasted, since his portrayal has taken a life of its own? That it’s almost not just his anymore it’s everyone he’s touched?
I get the impression that he had to work hard to leave a typecast only to find himself in another? How does he manage his own personal expectations about how his audience prefers to see him!!!! Wow that would be a question!

Thank you for the post. What a great actor and vocalist! How sad he never knew his father. What a hero his dad was, dying in WW2 for his country. 🥰

His 'father', his mothers first husband died a lot longer before he was born! His mother was a young widow, no kids, and had a one night stand with a flyer and never told him he had a son.

Gosh, the poor Phantom is entitled to the Big O after so many loveless years! If I were directing the scene, I'd have him drop to his knees, kiss Christine's palm while embracing her hips as she cradles his head in her hands. More passion could be wrung from this moment.....

At 2:20, there was more to the statement ".. you will be . . . The Phantom of the Opera". What Bob Costas actually says in the interview was "Does it bother you that you will be known from now on until the end of time you will be..".

Haha, I know. When I first heard that, I was like, "Whoa, okay, that . . . that's a little TMI", but at the same time, I was like, "Well no WONDER he's always trembling so much in the bootlegs!" LOL.

I'm fairly new to all this but it reminds me of the Star Trek phenomenon. Shatner and Crawford should team up and do something on their common experience of being trapped in a character decades after their careers have moved on.
I chuckled at the white stockings, but after reading in his bio that he had varicose vein surgery, they may be necessary for such an active person.

The poor Phantom is entitled to a Big O after waiting decades for any kind touch. I love the scene, you can feel him overwhelmed by that kiss. I would have directed it differently though, I would have had him drop to his knees and kiss Christine's palm in gratitude while clutching her hips as she embraces his head. Way more sexy!
