    In this video I show you how to get started with the Arduino R4 Wifi. I am designing this class for absolute beginners. My assumption is that you will work hard and pay attention, but I do not assume you are already an expert. In this lesson you will write your first few programs. I will show you a project that I have done with the new R4 Wifi, and the Sunfounder Elite kit. I have decided to make a new Arduino class, based on the R4Wifi and the sunfounder kit, and hope you guys will join me on this journey.

    The SunFounder Kit costs $96 and will be very useful for Paul's lessons, however I have the Elegoo MEGA 2560 Project Starter Kit used for Paul's R3 lessons. Since many of the components are duplicated in the SunFounder kit, I simply ordered the Arduino Uno R4 WiFI board for $27. I will order, individually, the sensors that interest me associated with Paul's lessons. Typically these sensors cost between $5-$15. For those having trouble getting the SunFounder kit or if you already have many of the components/sensors found in the SunFounder kit, this many be a more cost effective option.

    I am brand new and can't wait to get started! I come from a pure hardware environment, and I basically need a way to make some output decisions based on some inputs. I realized I needed some "smarts" and not just relay logic. I all but scrapped the idea, but someone told me about Arduino, and here I am. A cursory dive in has me completely fascinated!! It was like when I got an erector set as a kid. This particular video helped me a lot! It convinced me that the Uno R4 Wi-Fi with the kit is a good starting point. I really like the way Paul explains things, because when it comes to the software side, I need someone who can "put the cookies on the bottom shelf". Can't wait to get my hardware and start learning. I've just got one issue... I will drink my coffee hot 😁

    I am almost finished the Uno R3 lessons (64 of 68). The code and software for the IR library for the versions you were using for IR is no longer supported. Ironically this happened the same day I watched your R4 intro, so it drove home the point about keeping up with the latest technology including Arduino's. Looking forward to your new R4 Wifi series. Paul where is the best place to see some directory or starting point to find all of your lessons on specific topics? I was thinking about GPS. I found some older GPS tutorials of yours I didn't know existed but wonder if there are some newer ones and possibly newer components. I am also looking for hardware and methodology for measuring angles between lines or planes that are remote from my vantage point. For example how could I measure the height of a building or tree with an UNO and some kind of sensor(s)? If I could measure a couple of distances and angles I could do the trig. to calculate the results OR maybe components exist already do that for me!

    As a complete newb (I’m not a stranger to software developing, but never tinkered with Arduino, I’m just about to order my first Arduino and start learning), I’m a bit confused about the WiFi limitation:
    1. I thought the WiFi limitation would be the easiest one to get by, expecting that there are WiFi chips/modules whatever they might be called that you could just hook up to your Arduino board on some pins and have WiFi. As for memory and cpu, seems a lot harder to go around the limit - I mean, once your code and libraries are optimized as much as possible, and that’s still not enough, then there’s probably nothing more you could do…
    2. Looking to order the R4, I was thinking it would be best if I get the non-WiFi version, and separately get some sort of WiFi module (if something like that exists? Haven’t looked much into it yet)… my logic is: if I want to create a product that needs WiFi, it would need to use some sort of WiFi chip/module on the final product. And I’m thinking that maybe working with a separate/external connected module could be different than working with the built-in one? In terms of code and libraries? Plus, maybe for a final product I would need to learn how to connect a WiFi module anyway? Like wiring and/or the transistors involved (if any) and such? Because, as far as I know, you wouldn’t use the Arduino board on the final product, but need to create a pcb design and have a PCB manufacturer to manufacture the board. Am I wrong in my logic? (I hope I am)
    Don’t know anything for sure, just thinking out-loud, asking… Like I said, I’m a complete newb, looking to get into Arduino.
    P.S. also saw some video mentioning the 8mA limitation on the gpio pins on the R4, compared to 20mA on the R3 (maybe you will mention it too later in the video, don’t know yet, I paused to write this comment. I have no clue what that means. To me, it sounds like a big limitation, like “you will not be able to use things (sensors, modules etc.) that require more than 8mA”? And would most ”things” require more than 8mA? Or not? I don’t even know if the question is stupid or not, I have absolutely no electrical background :)

    I already have the Arduino R4 WiFi, but the kit is sold out on Amazon and isn’t available at Micro Center either. Any other solutions with or without the Arduino itself?

    I'd love for you to do an update on this. The fact is that R4 is all but DEAD. I have one, and you can not find libraries for most hardware, such as shields. Shields are mostly still incompatible, and the fact is that no one wants to update their libraries. It has basically become like other discontinued 32bit arduinos... a dead end.

    Will the course start next week without the kit being available? Amazon has UNO R4 WiFi in stock and can be had for $28.50. Should I buy one now?

    • @paulmcwhorter

      I would wait for the kits. The first lessons will be review and could be dont on an R3. More advanced concepts using the R4 unique features will come later.

      I don't know if the kit on sunfounder is the same as the one on Amazon, the sunfounder price is $95.99 USD with free shipping. Should I buy from sunfounder or wait for Amazon? Should I buy an acrylic case or is a case included?

    Hi Paul, I see that you have worked with BeagleBone before in your previous lectures. Are you able to do a tutorial on how to use the BeagleBone Servo cape and BeagleBone Black and BeagleBone AI64?

    • @paulmcwhorter
      @paulmcwhorter  8 месяцев назад

      No, there is really no user base for the beaglebone platform. I invested a lot in making that first set of videos on it, and no one ever engaged, so dont plan to work on that platform any more.

    Paul, The Arduino UNO R4 WiFi board is available stand-alone on Amazon. Since the Sunfounder kit is sold out, is it possible to get a parts list for the new series so we can buy the UNO R4 WiFi board and components separately? Thank you very much in any case! Michael

      More kits should be available soon. The kit I am using does not come without the R4, so might have to wait a bit for it.

    😫 from beginner again? Well, that will give me time to get all the stuff together again 😅
    Any chance we can program with more functions and go a little more in depth into object oriented programming this time around?
    And more interrupt stuff too 🎉

    • @paulmcwhorter
      @paulmcwhorter  8 месяцев назад

      Yes, I like to go back to the start so we never leave the new guys behind. This series will go much further than the earlier arduino class, and we will be looking at more of the hardware features of the board. So be patient, we will get to the cool stuff soon enough

      @@paulmcwhorter Thank you very much, I also think that some I2C section with sensors in a buss would be good as this was not shown in the original and is not that complicated, we used plenty of serial but nothing like 485 buss protocols that I still find in Hydraulic valve packs in my industry.
      I went ahead and did some HMI development and design with the NEXTION screens as they seem to be popular but because of limitations of image manipulation moved to the STONE HMI and finally landing on the raspberry zero 2 w and KIVY...
      All thanks to you SIR.

    Do they have a kit without the R4? If so, what is it? I want to have a kit, but do not need a second R4 at this time. The kit is also on backorder, most likely due to R4 supply chain.

    • @paulmcwhorter
      @paulmcwhorter  8 месяцев назад

      There is a shortage of R4 Arduinos, that is what is holding up kit deliveries. I would wait until the kit is avaiable. The first lessons are going to be review and could be done on the R3 as we wait on the R4's

    I enjoy these series. One itsy bitsy aggravating thing, though. You are repeating yourself. If you want FULL attention, your audience will hear and understand you the first time. If they didn't, another round won't help.

    The kit is currently unavailable at Amazon! I know you have tried your best but commerce doesn't play fair! I tried to do your robotics course but the ONLY newer model available on Amazon wasn't compatible with your lessons. I also tried the color display that also didn't work so well. It is not YOUR fault. The newer version of the SAME robot from Amazon should have been backwards compatible and the color display newer libraries should also have been backwards compatible. They just discontinued the older versions entirely with NO hope of support for their previous software / models! POOH POOH to all those companies that just release new items with NO backwards compatibility to their earlier versions, except Arduino, which IS BACKWARDS compatible as you state in this video!

      When my review dropped, the sunfounder kit sold out very quickly. The issue in the supply chain is availability of the Arduino R4's. They are not easy to buy in quantity right now. Hopefully the supply chain will free up soon.
