  • 2 things are very important when harvesting the fish.
    First we want the fish to die quickly without suffering.
    Secondly we want to preserve the fish quality.
    In this video I present a technique to dispose the fish very quickly and humanely.
    You will also learn how to clean and consume the delicious aquaponics fish.
    If you share the desire to grow sustainable, healthy and tasty food in your backyard thank to aquaponics, feel free to join the aquaponics revolution movement there: aquaponic.subscribemenow.com/

    I really enjoy your channel. I live in Chile but I am from the former USA.
    We have a lot of fish production here in Chile. Mostly Salmon.
    I would like to do Trout here for my own consumption. So I am learning from your Channel .
    I have been farming all my life and here it is a natural process.
    Thanks. Jim

    you have a really great channel for aquaponics, I have learnt a great deal. Modeled my settlers from your videos. Im further north than you however Im going to try Murry cod in my system, My fish pond is quite a bit larger than yours but only because I have large acreage. Your ideas are great, for example as you said in this video Im going to be growing the soldier fly larva to feed back to the fish with scraps. Thank you.
    absolutely great channel.

    I am very curious about your Fish Tank/Pond Temperature variation around the year. Would you care to share the information along with size (especially depth (1.8m just watched another video of yours)) of the Pond?

      Hi M&M, the temperature goes from 8 to 24 on the surface. volume is not exact but probably around 5m3

    Love your channel mate but as a fisherman that is not the most human way to kill them the best way in my and most people I knows opinion is called Ikejime. In this method the fish has a metal skewer inserted into the brain which is just behind the eye (you will know you have hit the brain because the fish will spasm and the fins will all stick out) the fish is now brain dead which means it cannot feel any pain then you simply cut its throat to bleed it out and THEN put it in an ice bucket. There are more complicated steps in this method but this simplified way is still more human and preserves the meats better then an ice slurry 👍

      Nop! if grown in the same pond they taste the same. It's literally impossible to tell the difference by taste and texture.

    on the way to 5 minutes?! Thats not killing it quickly in any sense but saving yourself the unpleasent task of having to hit it over the head or IkeJime it (the second of which seems like a good option to me but im not sure i could do it enmass to a tank full of fish).
    (not judging as such, i pussied out and thats how we killed sick goldfish but to claim its fast is wrong).
    Love the channel and the content (i watch all your vids, great info!).

      Hi Mike, Yes you are right, the preparation is longer than other methods. I should probably not say "Quick" 😅. This method is quick when you harvest several fish at once but in this case it was not quick. The point is it's "Humane" and it preserve the flesh quality. 😀

    • @tegannottelling
      @tegannottelling 2 года назад +1

      basically its slowing down the metabolism of the fish. Basically the fish goes to sleep before it dies. Hence why it takes a while, their metabolic rate has to slow down . I don't personally like killing things but it is necessary if someone eats meat. I cut the heads off with a sharp knife, quickly and cleanly I don't imagine the fish feels anything for long as you sever the spine, but I guess a bigger bucket with more of an ice slurry would be ideal?

      @@tegannottelling Fish still survives without their body, it's amazing to think, but they don't die quickly. The only humane way to kill them is Ikejime, a sharp spike through their brain.

    Why wouldn’t you just use a larger bucket? I could see how the cold water would slow them down until they die, but it seems inhumane to cram them upside down into a tiny bucket of salt water and put an ice pack on top of them also.

    • @AquaponicsRevolution
      @AquaponicsRevolution  2 года назад

      Hi Paul, yes you are right. The limit I had here was the ice supply to I privileged a small volume but it would be much better to use a larger bucket, more ice and handle all fish in one go.

  • @AnonUser18

    Just use a knife, why overcomplicate things

    • @AquaponicsRevolution
      @AquaponicsRevolution  3 месяца назад

      Yes you can. The ice will cool the fish flesh and slow down enzymes and bacteria action, keeping the fish fresh during the cleaning process. This technique is very useful in summer.

  • @SilverforceX

    This is not the most pain free way to kill fish. It's just most pleasant for YOU, the kind human who wants to eat fish. Putting them on ice causes them to go into shock, it's stress on the fish as they slowly die.
    Look up the Ikejime method, it's instant and as best as we can determine, painless since it destroys the brain immediately.
