  • For anyone who is struggling with learning to breathe from their diaphragm, this is for you! It took me years to figure this out and I created a trick from my own journey that completely helped me in an easy, simple way!
Take your time with this--you've never done this before! It took me several weeks to get used to the feeling of breathing this way upright. And it took several months for me to do it standing up without consciously thinking about it. This is a TOTAL muscle thing, and habits (especially muscle habits) simply take time. There's no way around it. Trust the process and you'll be breathing from your diaphragm in no time!
If you need any one-on-one help with singing, I'm always here! Check out my website to get a lesson with me whenever you need one! katecosettevocals.com/schedule-a-consultation
Have fun with this and happy singing!

Doing this actually helped release some tension in my throat. So that’s pretty cool.
I’ve also been doing the “La Ga” exercises I learned from Eric. It definitely helps to keep your jaw still while doing them and it really eases the tension in my throat, as well.
I really appreciate you guys posting this stuff for us. It’s super helpful.

    Hello Kate, from Chicago Illinois
I absolutely love your videos, and I am learning so much; about the vowel system and different breathing techniques. One thing that had been taught to me l, as inhumane as it sounds you slump yourself over a table or a chair & put your hand on your stomach and pant like a dog with your tongue out.
Also, I saw that you had commenter on a subscriber below With a question in terms of vibrato, I saw you had put a link to a video below. I have not looked at that video yet though I’m about too.
    Vibrato exercise # 01
One thing that helped me to unlocked Vibrato is to take both hands, pressed them against your belly button and push out and in out and in.
This alters, the way the air hits the vocal folds creating vibrato affect
    Vibrato technique #02
Bounce yourself up and down the way a grandpa might bounce a baby up and down on their lap. This can also alter the stability of the airflow traveling into the vocal folds.
Example : if you are exercising and jogging you’re on the phone and you hear your voice shimmering up and down same thing

      So happy to help!
Haha yes, I have tried that “bend forward” exercise for diaphragm breathing, however that one never seemed to work for me haha. My breathing journey was a stubborn one 😂
Thanks for sharing that about vibrato! Again it came naturally to me so I have no idea how I managed to learn it. Those are really interesting techniques, thanks so much for sharing!
Keep up the awesome work, and enjoy your journey!! 😄

I don’t feel it is any harder for me to breathe deeply or lying down. I think its because I figured out how to double and triple inhale, and it fill my stomach and chest to the absolute max. So now I can inhale once and get a huge amount of air. My capacity increased. Try breathing as deeply as you can, do not breath out, and breath in again, and again. You will hit a point where you are at max air capacity, where its just not possible to expand any further. Once you learn how that feels like, it becomes a habit. I didn’t do this for singing. I did this because I was learning to meditate and had to get rid of stress. It became a habit for me, because I do breathing exercises every-time I notice any stress. Who knew this was good for singing too!

Ahh unfortunately vibrato is one of the few things I don't teach, because I learned it naturally and don't know how I did haha. But here's a video I usually refer people to for vibrato, and I hope it helps you!! :) ruclips.net/video/d5uWwYOMr4Q/видео.html

How to have a proper breathe support maam? Also do you have facebook page to contact you for a personal voice lesson. Thankyou maam

Hello! The first step in having proper breath support is breathing with your diaphragm/breathing lower so that you’ll have a lot more air to work with (that’s the exercise I explain in the video). However the next step is being able to control your exhale so that you can maintain that air as long as you can. The best exercise for that is to breathe like I described in the video (so that you can feel your hand on your stomach moving outward), and then make a “shh” or a “tss” noise to exhale it all out as slowly as you can. To do this, make sure your teeth are together, and you’ll pretty much be imitating shushing someone “shhh” or the sound we make if we’re imitating a burn “tsss”, the whole way through the exhale. Time yourself to see how slowly you can exhale that breath, and practice being able to go as long as you can without running out of air! The trick is to try to release as little air as possible at a time so that you’re learning to control it.
Absolutely! Here is the link to my website where you can contact me for a voice lesson: www.katecosettevocals.com/schedule-a-consultation . I would be honored to help you with your voice!
If you have any questions on that breathing exercise, let me know!

Yes, that’s a great way to feel those abdominal muscles working - a great way to know where you want to feel your breath! :)
