  • @Thyrwyn

They are the definition of presence, attitude, and charisma. Even in their debut songs "Boombayah" and "Whistle" they just demand attention.
And nobody expects Blackpink the first time. Nobody. They were the group that got me into Kpop.
(The attitude is staged - they are absolute sweethearts IRL - they trained for 4-5 years before their debut in 2016. But they've been in the spotlight since their debut. )

    • @Thyrwyn
      @Thyrwyn 2 года назад +3

If you don't start with their debut songs, I'd recommend "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du", "How You Like That", "Lovesick Girls", "Kill This Love", or "As If It's Your Last". They will also be performing at this year's Video Music Awards - so keep an eye out for that.
Research? A good place to start is the Netflix Documentary "Light Up The Sky"

Blackpink is not just a 'tinie, tiny lil group' because they are THE BIGGEST GIRLGROUP in the world. They own and have been given by that TITLE by Grammys, Variety, TIme magazine, BIllboard, Rollingstones and other world renown music magazines. They are also the MOST SUBSCRIBED 'ARTIST' in RUclips. They also are THE QUEENS OF KPOP. They've been breaking records, winning awards, and topping charts here and there with their songs. They also hold records with fastest MV to reach certain views in 24 hrs. They also have Billions and billions of views too :)) PLS react more to their stuff :) they are so good and multitalented. :)

To echo your comments, I was a rock/rap guy, always had the preconceived notion that K-Pop would be cutesy girls all dressed alike singing in high voices. BLACKPINK was the first K-Pop artist I saw and my mind was literally blown. Like you, I had to re-evaluate everything that I thought I knew. It was like discovering that there was a new flavor or color that I never knew existed. Since then I've been hooked on the group as well as a few other K-Pop artists. Many others are good but none have the "X Factor" and Western appeal that BLACKPINK has.

The musical references here are pretty extensive, Jennie starts out with a reference to Biggie's famous line "kick in the door, wavin the 44"(Jennie says Coco). Next Lisa references Rhianna's "Pon de Replay" with "One by one then two by two" and also 50 Cent's P.I.M.P. with "you couldn't get a dollar outta me". Rosé and Jisoo both reference Taylor Swift with "look what you made us do". Finally, the Jennie/Lisa rap verse is backed by a sample of Ice Cube/Easy-E's part of "Gangster Gangster" by N.W.A. They(Teddy and the girls) definitely weren't shy about shouting out their inspirations/favorite artists in this song.

I found BlackPink about 3 years ago. My favorite songs so far are Whistle and Pretty Savage. Given your reaction to Pink Venom, I'd suggest you start with Ddu Ddu Du (sp). I like their attitude and their confidence but most of all, I just like their music.

Okay, since you asked, the BLACKPINK "kinda long elevator pitch":
Four girls, all raised in different countries, signed with one of the biggest K-Pop agencies in S. Korea when they were 14-16 years old. They then lived in the dorms of the company building (affectionately known as "The Dungeon" as it was in one of the sub-levels) where they trained fourteen hours a day, seven days a week for six years until they debuted in August 2016. Both of their debut songs were hits, they broke the record for the fastest that a new artist hit Number One in the charts (after only 13 days). Since then almost every song they've released has been a hit. They are known for their VERY limited discography (only 23 original songs, not counting covers, collabs and solos) and they have huge gaps (by K-Pop standards) in between comebacks. They are the most subscribed artist on RUclips with over 78 million subs and over 25 billion views on their RUclips channel. Through it all the girls have remained sweet, humble and "adorkable", surprised at their success and thankful and accessible to BLINKS (their fandom). I saw them in New York during their 2019 World Tour, at the Sound Check I was able to give one of the members (Rosé, the blonde in this video) a gift, she thanked me during the Sound Check then again before she left the stage. Also fun to watch (besides their Netflix doc) is BLACKPINK DIARIES, their backstage vlog of their 2019-2020 World Tour.

  • @prmtv
    @prmtv 2 года назад +18

And they don't use green screens either so you can imagine how expensive this was.
The main reason we love these girls is because of their duality. On stage they are badasses but off stage they are adorable, down to earth goofballs.
They are all fluent in 4 to 5 languages.
Jennie (rapper in red at beginning) was born in S Korea but spent five years in New Zealand so she has an accent.
Lisa (red head) is Thai, born and raised in Thailand. She is arguably the best female dancer in Kpop.
Rosè (silver hair) was born in New Zealand but grew up in Australia so she has an aussie accent.
Jisoo (in the cage) born and raised in S Korea.

Biggest group on earth right now. Blackpink showed up during the pandemic dropping the most iconic music videos and personal performances EVER!!! Their fan base worldwide is FAR too big to even try this world tour they are about to embark upon. The last one they did already used THE largest stadiums on EARTH. They are OUTRAGEOUSLY talented in so many ways, you will be shocked over and over by what you see them doing.

  • @aaronwong1977
    @aaronwong1977 2 года назад +17

The group is made up of four complete aces. Each excelling in different areas, but blending together very well. As others have mentioned, they play a lot with their duality. Showing their pretty/sweet/soft/cute sides (pink), and their amazing/powerful/swaggy/intense/fierce/talented sides (black) in equal measures. Watching their antics off stage is just as entertaining as watching their performances and music videos.
Definitely check out How You Like That, Kill This Love, Pretty Savage (I always suggest the lyric video for this one), and DDU-DU DDU-DU, then take a listen to Stay, Hope Not, and You Never Know. As If It's Your Last and Lovesick Girls are also great for their cuter side. For live perforances, I always recommend DDU-DU DDU-DU Remix Encore at Tokyo Dome, and their Cover of Miguel's song Sure Thing. The Miguel cover in particular because it's one of the few very stripped back performances where you get to hear them with no backing track.
Lazerx1 mentioned the BLACKPINK Diaries, I'll also mention that BLACKPINK House was great fun to watch.
They are also models and global ambassadors for big fashion brands. You can check out some of that by following them on IG.
    Jisoo: sooyaaa_
    Jennie: jennierubyjane
    Rosé: roses_are_rosie

I know you from your Coutney Hadwin reactions, but I am also a blink (Blackpink fans). These girls are a Kpop group under YG entertainment. They were assembled from thousands of auditions in a few different countries. They became trainees as teenagers and spent years in training before their debut. There is a lot more detail I could go into but I'm sure there will be plenty more in these comments. I'll just leave you with my favorite song from their last album, which was nothing but hit after hit by the way, "Love to Hate Me". You really can't go wrong wherever you go with Blackpink their live performance may be even more fire than their videos. Peace and long life.

    Role of each member

    - JISOO : VOCAL
    - JENNIE : RAP/VOCAL
    - ROSÉ : VOCAL
    - LISA : DANCER/RAP
    IMPORTANT NOTE :
Those are the real official role that were given by their record label back in the old days but those roles doesn't necessarily means they can't change their role because all 4 of them actively remains as an all-rounder artist who kept improving themselves everytime they came out with a new project, so basically they can always blend themselves into any kind of role/position depends what type of creative concept that they'd be put into their song/album...

    NEXT SONG'S SUGGESTION
If we gonna go to the edgier side of their music then these 2 up-beat tracks would definitely be a good starter :
    - HOW YOU LIKE THAT : ruclips.net/video/ioNng23DkIM/видео.html
    - DDU-DU-DDU-DU : ruclips.net/video/IHNzOHi8sJs/видео.html
and then these particular 2 different tracks much likely will give you a good glimpse on how they embody the softier side of their discography :
    - LOVESICK GIRLS : ruclips.net/video/dyRsYk0LyA8/видео.html
    - READY FOR LOVE : ruclips.net/video/7WyHtSlvHD4s/видео.html
    REMINDER
Always dont forget to make sure to use the captions/CC/subtitles for a better understanding to their lyricism (especially since they mainly singing in Korean)... ENJOY

Great reaction. Blackpink is a deep deep rabbit hole to fall into. Four legitimate superstars in one group combined with the greatest producer in Kpop, Teddy Park (former rap star in Korea). Lisa's (the Celine rapper) MV Lalisa came out last year and broke the 24-hour view record by a solo artist (74 million vs. Talyor's Swift's 63 million), and that isn't even her best solo song, which is Money (all English all wrap, 650 million views in 10 months). Lisa, who is actually Thai, is considered the best female rapper and best dancer in Kpop and has more IG followers than any Kpop star, male or female (80 million). She is typically included in the most beautiful women in the world lists, named the third most beautiful woman by British magazine Nubia. Jisoo, the regal looking one in the blue scenes, was named by Nubia as the Most Beautiful Woman in the World for 2022, and long been considered the epitome of Korean beauty standards. Jisoo reps Dior and Cartier. She has a unique deep singing voice, second best in the group. Jisoo is also a highly acclaimed actress, who was the star of a 13-episode Kdrama last year. She is a heavily sought-after actress for movies and dramas, so she doesn't need this Blackpink gig. You would think with all that talent and beauty and coming from wealth that she would be arrogant, she is actually the comic relief of the group in real life and has a very humble personality. Rose, the blonde, who is actually Australian, is the Taylor Swift of Kpop, singer/songwriter/guitar-piano player with the best voice in the group. Her covers of songs are highly acclaimed, even by the original artists, including songs from Coldplay, the Killers, Oasis, and John Mayer. She has 2 all English solos that were very successful, critically acclaimed and broke many records. Jennie opened the song with her rap and rocked the ManU shirt, and is often rated as the most popular female kpop artist in South Korea (outside of South Korea it is Lisa). Jennie has her own solo project called "Solo" that has over 800 million RUclips views. She reps Chanel (the brand), ergo the opening line "Waiving the Coco" as in founder Coco Chanel. Even though Lisa is considered to be the best rapper in all female Kpop, Jennie is actually the Main Rapper in Blackpink. All the girls are very humble and down to earth which is why they have such a devoted fanbase.

BP was my introduction to KPop and I too wasn't sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't what they gave me, and have been givingn me for about 3 years now. There are so many great KPop groups, from every genre of music really, often people think of KPop as a genre, but really it's just music in 1 or more languages, and often with many subgenres tossed into 1 song. It also brought me to your channel (subbed now) and I can't wait to see what else you have reacted to and where you go from here. I do think you'd like watching their Dance Practice video - so much of it is also about attitude/delivery/acting

All of them trained in some kind of academy. Kpop agencies are a thing in Korea, there are a lot! They take auditions, and accept people who show some talent and potential to be an idol. Then, they become "trainees" of the agency, they move into the building and start to take lessons non-stop. It's HARD as hell, there are testimony of how hard and stressful is. Some of them can't resist and quit, but the stronger, most talented ones make it into their debut as a group (or solo artist, that's also a thing in Kpop). Blackpink girls trained for periods from 4 to 6 years, and we SEE why they are successful, they're just amazing.

Alot of the Rap reference comes from the awesome Producer, Teddy Park. He was a rapper in the 2000s and has won awards for his word. His moved from America to Korea to get involved in the music scene. The two rappers, Jennie (1st member) and Lisa (2nd). The vampier scene was Jisoo and Rock, Rose (accent over e) who actually plays the guitar and piano. I found them not even a month ago and their whole catalog is on repeat. They have 5-8yrs of experience prior to debuting.. .this is why they are fantastic. I look forward to seeing other reviews from you regarding Blackpink.

I discovered Blackpink 2 years ago and I have become a Blink (Blackpink fandom) since then. I really enjoyed Pink Venom, it is their comeback after 2 years so everyone was really exited about it!
Here are some facts Blackpink 😄
Blackpink is a kpop girl group, they debuted in 2016 and there are now the biggest girl group. Blackpink consists of four members (in order of appearance in the MV):
    - Jisoo lead vocalist (she is the one playing the string instrument in the pink cage)
    - Jennie rapper and vocalist (she opens the song with her rap part)
    - Lisa rapper and main dancer of the group (she raps just after Jennie)
    - Rosé main vocalist (Rosé is the first girl who sings in the dark water scene)
Jisoo was borned and raised in South Korea, Jennie was borned is SK but she lived in New Zealand for a good part of her life, Rosé is korean but was borned in New Zealand but lived most of her life in Australia and finally Lisa is from Thailand!
I personally really love Blackpink because they portray a fierce and confident image and I really enjoy all of their songs. I would recommand you to react to Du ddu du ddu, How you like that , Pretty Savage and Whistle which are my personal favorites.
If you want to get to know each of the girls better I recommand you react/watch a guide to Blackpink like THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO BLACKPINK 2022 (ruclips.net/video/h0wjVh1U8qk/видео.html)!

BlackPink is both Pretty and Savage... there is a duality to them.
Most of their songs have a mixture of Korean and English; however, their collab Ice-Cream with Selena Gomez is all English.

    Thanks for the video !
Blink here (name of Blackpink's fan), although probably one of the casual ones. From the Kpop songs I've heard, it's pretty usual to have Rap with signing and dancing in a song. Members are Jennie, Rosé, Lisa, Jisoo.
Each of them have their strong points, and I think they're really well balanced overall. This song was their comeback after a really looong stop so their fans have been waiting for a long time.
I would certainly watch if you decided to react to other songs, my favorites are Ddu du ddu du, Boombayah and How you like that.

As far as their training approximately 5 years of 13 - 12 hour days on and 1 day off, followed by 6 years of performing and owning the world of music. That is why they are so good. I suggest starting at watching Ddu Du Ddu Du Tokyo Dome Remix followed by the entire Tokyo Dome live concert.

Great reaction. As Blackpink goes, this one has a gentler kinder slower chorus as compared to their debut (Boombayah) and other comeback songs (Kill This Love, DDu Du DDu Du, How You Like That), all of which have over 1 billion views each (DDDD has 1.8 billion), and which have far more aggressive and memorable in your face choruses. Also gentler and kinder than Lisa's "Money" MV, all English all rap (the Celine rapper in this song), that has over 650 million views in 10 months. Lisa's other song "LaLisa" broke the 24 hour view record by a solo artist formerly held by Taylor Swift (73 million vs. Taylor's 64 million). Lisa is the most popular Kpop star on earth (with more IG followers than any male or female Kpop idol, 80 plus million), but surrounded by 3 other equally talented and equally beautiful superstars (ranked 2, 3, and 4 in IG followers for Kpop Idols).

Nice first reaction. Others will provide a basic education, what I want to add is that BP is not really representative of what most people think of when they think kpop. As you discovered in this one track alone they span pop/hiphop/edm/trap, etc.. Personally I don't believe there has ever been a group, male or female that does it so well and I go back to the 60's. Their skills are undeniable. The dance practice vid for this was just released. It too is a treat.

I found your channel because of your reaction to Balckpink's Pink Venom. Subscribed, liked, notifications on, and commenting for Blackpink 😁🖤💗 I like your reaction channel! It's the right amount of pausing and commenting moments.
When you said you never listened or heard of Blackpink, I was thinking oh oh he is going to freak out once he hit play 😂 and after, you said you are rethinking your entire world, I'm m not so sure if you should listen to them again, you may not be able to stop ✌️😁 But if you feel like you want to, watch How You Like That or what us Blinks call HYLT for short. You can't miss it, it has more than a Billion views. Or "Kill This Love"/ KTL or "Lovesick Girls" - there's lots of acting on that MV 😍🖤💗

BP is no joke. The Grammys, Billboard, Rolling stone, and many more have officially labeled BLACKPINK as the world's biggest girl group right now, yes now way surpassing Little Mix and Fifth Harmony (I love them all 3 though).
BP is also the world's #1 most subscribed artist on RUclips, surpassing Justin Bieber last year.
Pls react to more by them 😭

Yep a lot of Westerners have ingrained preconceived notions with Kpop. Yes the cutesy very poppy groups still exist but you're only really scratching the surface since Kpop while it may suggest to mean "Korean pop", it's actually Highly experimental and is typical to mix elements from other genres of music. So you can see A LOT of Kpop groups that do more hip-hop like BLACKPINK, or more vocal-heavy R&B ones like MAMAMOO... or more pop rock like DREAMCATCHER... and many more...
That said, I still want you to react to the "traditional Kpop" groups, you might surprise yourself and end up loving it..
An example would be "TWICE- FEEL SPECIAL".
