  • Two steam charter trains came to Cumbria today.
    The Settle Carlisle Thunderer 1 came from Peterborough to Carlisle, with LMS Stanier Class 8F 48151 being the steam power between Hellifield and Carlisle north and south.
    The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express came from London to Carlisle, north via Shap, then south along the Settle line, with SR Merchant Navy Class 35018 British India Line being the steam power between Carnforth and Carlisle, then returning between Carlisle and Preston.
    48151 was filmed travelling north through Ribblehead Station, then later 35018 was filmed (in rain) passing south just south of Langwathby.

      Thanks Jeff - I love a challenge - but not rain/wind/people in the way!

    Beauty, poetry and raw power in locomotion. Still let's all worship a vacuous i-Phone instead.

      Thanks Nick. The i-phone brigade have no regard for those of us trying to make a good job of our recordings!

    I'd have loved it if you'd been able to capture the Thunderer going over the viaduct.

    Pulling a long train and no diesel at the back - excellent.

    Great stuff, Julian. I'm watching from my new farming channel so you get an extra subscriber! Looks to me like it was raining at Langwathby? It did at Birkett, too - sideways!

      Thanks Alan - it was rather unpleasant at Langwathby - and the train was 20 minutes late.

    Could someone get much closer to a platform edge???!!!

    • @JulianThurgood
      @JulianThurgood  5 лет назад +1

      Sadly no! I try to keep away from the edge but that makes filming difficult as many selfish people do go too near to the edge!

    Has the 8f got a new boiler ticket anybody know thanks

    What a day! You got some useful footage, however, and it shows the completely selfish attitude of those who park themselves in the front of everybody on the whole platform!

    • @JulianThurgood
      @JulianThurgood  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks Alan. For the first shot I was at the viaduct end of the platform with a reasonable view, then someone came and stood near the edge not far in front of me, destroying any ability to record anything worthwhile. So I moved in front of him, but far enough back so it didn't ruin his effort! I much prefer remote locations without people, but didn't really have time for a long walk!

      Yes, stations can be a pain. Are you able to walk these days?

    • @JulianThurgood
      @JulianThurgood  5 лет назад +1

      Yes Alan - I should be ok - just waiting for better weather when the walk will be enjoyable!

    Great video with fab sound but those idots really should not be that close. They make me nervous in case something else came the other way.

    • @JulianThurgood
      @JulianThurgood  5 лет назад

      a train had just gone the other way just a few minutes before, so presumably they thought they were ok - or else they were just stupid!

      @@JulianThurgood while I agree, it is single line over the viaduct itself so unless the special stops at Ribblehead, nothing can come the other way.

    Great shots but a pity the resolution was so poor - couldn't read the number either on the front or even the side!
