Aloha kākou! Mahalo iā ʻolua no kō ʻolua manaʻo e pili ana i ku'u ʻāina hānau! I especially appreciate the segment on the price of living here in Hawaiʻi. It's particularly hard for Kānaka ʻŌiwi (Indigenous Hawaiians) to live in our ancestral home. We are also heavily militarized, specifically here in Waiʻanae - the fifth largest impoverished community in the fake state of Hawaiʻi, which, according to a 2010 U.S. Census, is home to the largest population of Native Hawaiians in the world. With so much discontent, sorrow, and frustration as a result of multiple forced removals and displacement from places like Mākua, a very sacred place for our people, I'm glad good individuals like yourselves found a home here. As for those yet to arrive, please be mindful of the Indigenous population. Wakīkī, as is mentioned in this amazing video, is a tourist destination; however, it was not always so. Many Hawaiians were forcibly removed to make Wakīkī the place it is today. It is where our people and culture have become a mockery, where degradation of people and culture is commonplace. And, sadly, many of our people suffer from decades of displacement and dispossession. Come to Hawaii, but please remember your vacation destination is our ancestral home, one we are still attempting to reclaim for ourselves and our future descendants. A hui hou kākou! :)
Thank you for sharing this, as is it just as important to the Natives that live here as well. So much is to be learned and understood about the Hawaiian Islands. Many people see it as a destination getaway, but lest they forget about the history of this native land. Again, thank you!
you guys saved a life mine This was really good. MOST PEOPLE have this dream of going to Hawaii thank you so much for keeping it real and clear and honest.
Hawaii isn’t for everyone, but it damn sure is for me. I am done with the mainland. Mainland is cheaper, but hey, I can smile and say hi to the police in HI and not think that I’m about to friggin die.
Benito, this is true. According to the 2019 Census, Blacks make up only 4.3% of the population. Pacific Islanders and Native Hawaiians are 25% of the population, and are often arrested as opposed to the black population.
Coming from a local... Yes traffic is really bad. I agree. Yes there is quarantine in Hawaii. The bugs, Yes but that’s the price of living in a tropical climate. Get used to the cockroaches. Real Estate is very high. Cost of Living is high. But Hawaii is home. I love it!
Thanks for the video! Thinking of moving to Oahu with my partner and you definitely gave us more food for thought. In particular, I was glad/relieved to see that you did not think anti-Black racism was a major issue in Hawaii.
Awesome, and thank you for watching. Whatever it is that you both decide is hopefully the right choice. The pandemic has changed the economy drastically to include the housing market. Please do your research, and I'm sure you'll make the best choice. Best of luck to you two.
I really enjoyed your honesty. I'm from California and I was thinking of moving my family to Hawaii. So, now we'll just visit and slowly make up our minds.
Non-military, lived here for 15+ years in total. Also moved here twice as well. I think you two summed it up very well “Keep vacation places for vacation!”
Thank you so much for this video! My husband may be getting stationed in Pearl harbor and I've been looking up information on living in Hawaii. I have a 15-year-old daughter and you touched base on all the questions I had. Very thorough and detailed. Thank you so much.
Living in the D.C. area the prices seem comparable. Housing, groceries, eating out, etc. In Hilo, the median price of a home is 37% lower than in Loudoun/Fairfax counties. A lot depends on where you're moving from.
Thank you for this comment, as I'm currently living in DC and considering a move to "paradise"...Would anyone here happen to know how expensive the local fruit is, at farmer's markets in Hawaii? I am whole food plant based, so I won't be needing milk, meat, processed goods...just fruit and veg
Not sure how I happened across your video but I'm glad I did. As someone who's looking at a possible move to O'ahu, I appreciate the insight you two gave. Definitely good information and mahalo for sharing.
Awesome! You will definitely enjoy your visit. Maui is nothing compared to Ohau. It's tranquil and relaxed. Island hopping is a must. Thanks for watching! ♥️
I love this place, it's my home. But hate it cause it's hard af to live here. Many of us live with family and friends just to have somewhere to eat and shower then back to work we go.
Yes, multigenerational families are all too familiar here, mainly to ease the financial obligation regarding the cost of living in Hawaii. I cannot imagine not being able to have your sense of privacy and a home to call your own.
Warning ⚠️ if doing tourism work. My son worked tourism in Kauai. He never really met any folks from the mainland, but he did meet plenty of homeless people, around Kauai who were not from Hawaii. He said for the most part people were ok, but he stayed in his lane and embraced the experience and rolled with it. He stated he would visit but not do tourism work out there ever again, or even think about living. The mngmt was horrible, $ hungry, employees had to ride a transit bus over an hour ride from employee housing to the resort he worked, there and back while you work 10 hour days, and the fact he said they will hire Americans from other states and house them, before hiring people from the mainland was sad , given the fact , the housing and homelessness situation is not good. Awesome 👍🏽 video. Ty
local, born and raised here, most of the mainlanders I've met eventually feel confined on an Island. I've been to the mainland before and could never live anywhere else but Hawaii.
We LOVE our life in Hawai'i! We move to big island five years ago from Colorado. We prefer Hilo side to hotter and drier Kona side. That said, we've made the BEST friends who we consider ohana! Big island is VERY chill and not nearly as populated as Oahu. Big island is 4,300 sq miles with less than 200,000 people. Compare that to Oahu 597 sq miles and 960,000 people.
We had orders there last year and I had to tell my husband its not going to work. I'm sure he was disappointed but the financial part scared me... the cabin fever, the stuck on a island feeling, not seeing my family. And we are on a debt free journey and moving there wouldn't have allowed us to pay off our student loans as planned!! Thank you for this video!!
Those are all solid concerns. It's definitely beautiful here, but it's a different lifestyle to adapt too. Hopefully, you'll be able to take a trip here instead. I'm glad this video gave you more clarity and that you were able to trust your judgment. ♥️
Stationed on Guam currently, but looking at going to Hawaii next!! I love the island life and not ready to leave it. The pros and cons are very similar to being here on GU, expect it's much smaller here. Thank you for the awesome video!
You're welcome! I've always wanted to visit Guam as well. I heard the island is tiny compared to Oahu. A word of advice, I wouldn't do back-to-back OCONUS tours. I would go to a different assignment, see how you feel after you have been there for a while, then consider a second overseas tour. Good luck with your future endeavors, and thank you for watching.
Excellent video! Thank you so much. So well done. I was doing research because I am wanting to move to an island and saw a job advertised for Honolulu that I was interested in but after watching your video and some others I realize I need to continue my search. I hope you can enjoy it while you are there. : )
Thank you! Sometimes we have to take a step back and consider all options before we make a hasty decision. Some people do well here, and most people struggle. I hope you find your forever home. Thank you for watching ♥️
Yes! The Centipedes in my home CONSTANTLY! I ask my neighbors about how to get rid of them and they just look at me as if I need to get used to it! The ONLY reason I regret moving from an apartment to a house
You can use sticky traps, insecticide, Boric Acid, or just a regular shoe will do the trick. They normally come from outside, but they love a moist environment.
I lived on schofield for 6 years when I was a kid. I saw snow fall once early in the morning one december. Sometimes there was dew and frost on the lawns as we walked to school. It absolutely does get colder than 60 in the winter. We used to turn our oven on and open the door while eating breakfast before school on really cold mornings. It can get down into the high 40s overnight.
Hi we went to Maui this month Dec 2021 for my husband’s birthday . We both fell in love with the environment and tropical breeze . Which is what brought me to your video . I wanted to see what other people if my culture are experiencing from my culture . I could see us living there .
Hi. What a fantastic experience you two had. Maui is such a gorgeous place to visit. Unlike Oahu, it's tranquil and not as touristy. However, I'm glad my video was recommended, and you had the chance to watch it. Good luck to you and your husband.
I have been to Hawaii twice with my family and I’m looking into going to college there and me and my family are looking into living there for a few months to see how we like it and I always wondered how much it would cost to ship pets because well, we own 7 animal excluding fish that we would rehome. We have 2 dogs, 2 cats, a hamster, and 2 frogs and all I can think about is how expensive it’s going to be bringing them with us. But hey, Hawaii is so beautiful and when I am traveling there I am at such peace and I am truly happy so whatever you go to do!
Wow! Yes, I can imagine how expensive it would be to travel with that many pets. I'm sure rehoming them would be a tad bit sad for you. However, I'm sure you will do what your heart desires. Good luck with everything 😊
Thank you so much for this video. I’m in London and always thinking wish I could trade this existence in for the that island life in Hawaii. So, this has shaped up my my thinking! Blessings for sharing. 🙏
@@CherelleVictoria Hi Cherelle, That's cool, so you know London in that sentimental way. Trust my words, you have been fortunate to be ushered into a different viewpoint of life. Life in London makes you transport to anywhere that the sun and blue waters appear. If you do ever feel tempted only do the summer season, the climate has diminished from early seventies to nineties. What would us guys here do without our dream places in this weather … Lol ! I wish you both the best of luck. Keep safe!
Loved all the information.. definitely keep it as a vacation spot , let your next video be about and average day out with the family like clothes and food shopping u know a typical day out. Even a playground at the park
Thank you, Judi, for the suggestion, and I'll consider it. I guess a lot has changed due to COVID, but we are slowly venturing out these days. After my recent hiatus, I have a lot to catch up on. Thank you for watching. 🙂
shave ice is how it is pronounced and written (present tense)..On the Big Island, the locals there call it 'ice shave' (reversed). Unemployment rates in Hawaii for some time has been lower than the national average..less than 3% before the covid-19 quarantine which closed off businesses and brought up the unemployment rate to 37% (in April and was the highest in the country back then). watched from beginning to end in one instance...you kept my interest...!
Hey, Hawaiiguy1! Thank you for the additional information. I really appreciate your insight as well. "Ice shave" huh? That's a unique way of saying it. It still tastes yummy 😋. However, due to COVID-19, I know the rate will continue to decrease, unfortunately. I wish there was a way to increase that burden overall. It's hard to make ends meet these days. Thank you for watching!
Girl, y'all ain't lying about nothing! I was stationed there in the early 2000s, as an 0-3/0-4...thank goodness we lived on Hickam. I worked at the Federal Building, no parking provided; it was cheaper to take your chances on getting a parking ticket than pay for parking...pathetic. And, it's very difficult to break into local culture/circle. I do miss the weather and the breeze though, and Bellows. continued success in your careers and marriage.
Thank you! I'm glad you were able to experience the HI Life. However, it's not for everyone. I'm ready to relocate. I truly miss the road trips, and restaurants.
I dunno if we live on the same island or not. But once you get out of Honolulu and are traveling H1 WB you DEFINITELY see people flyin 80 through traffic going towards Kapolei. Crazy HI drivers! :)
@@CherelleVictoria and you very rarely see people getting pulled over here in general but especially on the freeways. That’s a difference I noticed between the mainland and here.
I agree. It's so strange that you don't see that type of action. You'll see HPD down the interstate, but they all seem to be "off-duty" when their lights are off. However, the accidents are another story....
I forgot to add most local people have military ties my son is in the reserve my dad and and grandfather are all army and somewhat tied to military and not only that working on base gives me stability in work more than what i got from outside barbershops
Nice!! Hickam and Bellows were my favorite beaches also. I also developed island fever for a little while after my second week there. The traffic was terrible. What about the geckos? I had them in my quarters and when I first moved in the giant flying roaches were terrible also. Thank God that the military exterminators got rid of them for me. I never saw a centipede when I lived there. They must be newer to the island. Someone must have moved there and brought them with them...smh. The flies were pretty bad. Hey Cherelle, I lived in Atlanta also, well actually in a little town called McDonough, if you ever heard of it. Most of my ken folks still live in the Atlanta area.
Hey, Stephanie! Yes, I'm familiar with McDonough. I have family that lives nearby as well. I forgot about the geckos and their droppings that they leave behind. We just let them be so they can feast on the bug population here. Centipedes are a thing in Hawaii. Every day or so someone in housing is complaining about them. Yes, island fever is something that you have to deal with. We just try to stay as active as we can until our time is up. But I appreciate your feedback. I really enjoy hearing from you. Thanks for watching, Stephanie ♥️
I have visited my daughter 7 times. She’s on the big island. Everything is soooo pricey there and the locals are not very aloha. The locals are very prejudice. If it weren’t for my daughter and grandkids living there , I would never return to such an unfriendly pricey place.
My son worked tourism in Kauai. He never really met any folks from the mainland, but he did meet plenty of homeless people, around Kauai who were not from Hawaii. Aloha and hello! I am from Hawaii and its a beautiful place compare the Mainland. Hawaii is not Bad and Ugly. Specially the Ocean in Mainland is not clear like Hawaii. Weather is good and don't hang out in Honolulu try to visit another Island in Hawaii. Mahalo
Your hubby has an accent just like my BF…is he from Maryland? Lol He’s about to PCS to Oahu this summer and I’m going with him, working in a hospital. Thanks for this video! It’s helping me mentally prepare!
Lol, Anthony made up his accent. I don't know what you should call it 😂. However, I wish you all well on your next journey, and I hope you two like it here on the island. Best of luck! ♥️
Ohau is overly saturated. Once the family and I took a trip to Maui, it was a completely different scenery. Maui is very quiet, cooler temperatures, more landscaping, and very up-country. It was nice to gain a different experience. I would certainly recommend that you visit Ohau. You will not be disappointed.
Thank you, Anna!! I don't much. However, you must fill out a form 4140 (Letter of Intent) for your homeschool in zoned for your neighborhood. Once submitted, may begin homeschooling at any time. From what I understand from parents who share the same interests as yours, some highschools will not accept homeschool credits. So that's something to look into. However, many parents suggest that you look into Power Homeschool/Acellus (K-12). The program is fully accredited with teachers who can monitor student assignments. I hope this provides you a tad bit of insight. I hope it works out for you, and thank you for watching. ♥️
We came on our honeymoon and so wanted to move there. We found out it is quite expensive, but I guess it is the price of paradise. Where do most people live in Hawaii?
Hi. Yes, the cost of living here is very expensive. Most people who come to live on the island primarily come to Ohau due to the hotels, restaurants, shopping, military presence, etc.
They have affordable apartments through location rental management or Hawaiian properties. They have food stamps and housing programs that's why people can live there and be low income
Seems you have my cousin dance group on your channel 3:33 did u enjoy the show? Well I don’t like the flies either. But I stay in 2500sqft house for 3 yrs on my own. But about to throw a backpack on sell everything and travel. But hey nice channel
Hi, GroovJunk. Thank you! I did enjoy the show. I wish it weren't so crowded so I could have a front-row seat. I always look forward to seeing that particular dance group when I'm on the strip. I'm with you on the backpack mindset. There's so much to see and do. With that said, good luck with your future endeavors, and thank you for stopping by. Safe travels!
We lived in Overland Park Ks traffic is great I’m originally from Chicago so I understand soul snatching traffic ... we live here now and don’t want it to do us in at 56 years of age
I have a question so I’m not In the military and I’m currently saving money to move there one day are there any more tips that could possibly help me in the future.
The only tip that I can provide is for you to do your research about the island itself and what jobs are available. Find out what it will cost to ship your belongings and a vehicle if you have one. I would also recommend visiting the island for at least a week or two to get an actual idea of what it would be like to live there. I hope this helps, and good luck!
Are there farm co-ops? Are Lyft and Uber good side hustle? Or do cabbies rule the tourist traps and airports? Thank you both for your service, I am a Persian Gulf war veteran and am considering working for SSA on Lihue. Do you have any connections on Kauai? Finally, is there a veteran resource network? Best wishes and wellness to you and your family. Peace
Hey Cherrlle. This is a great video for people moving here or wanting to vacation.. And you two are so cute. What have your older children been doing to keep occupied and entertained? We have had 3 centipedes inside the house since we moved here 10 months ago. They were dying so they didn't move as fast. We had one in the light fixture above the island in the kitchen. We have the same house as you. I don't know how in the world that centipede got in there. Lol Thank you for sharing
Hey, Susan. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and I hope it reaches a larger audience as well. We take the kids for walks, hikes, movie nights on weekends, family game nights, and doing the best that we can lol. Seeing a centipede in my light fixture would freak me out too, so I hope I don't ever have that encounter. How are you guys loving the new home to include the community? I hope you guys have settled in well. 🙂
I’m in the Navy I was stationed at Pearl Harbor from 2013-2016 I had a good time there. Never experienced any racism the locals treated me well the police were cool they speak wave unless you speed on H-1 lol. Don’t got to worry about being shot as a black man. I felt safer on Oahu than any state in the USA. I’m thinking about taking a government job out there. Only downfall is the cost of living and traffic on H-1 and KAM Highway 😬😬😬 also black people can go anywhere on the island we are more welcome by the Samoans I know this for a fact (Waianae and Waipahu lived there so I know)
Thank you for your insight. Yes, living here is very relaxing. Less drama, and more Aloha. The cost of living is something everyone should consider. It is very brutal..... Thanks for watching!
To best answer your question, I would advise you to contact the Hawaii Social Security Field Office. As far as rent is concerned, feel free to visit the link below. Thanks for watching. realhawaii.co/blog/cost-of-living-hawaii-2020
Hi, Furtyle. There are plenty of black women who braid hair on the island. I have not had my hair braided by any of them, but I've seen their work, and they do a great job. Braids are more expensive here than the mainland. There is a black-owned hair salon here as well. The salon is called Salon MeAmour, and Ebony is the stylist and owner. I usually see her every six months for maintenance (shampoo & trim). I hope this helps.
Great video and your perspective. When you say $170k annual income to survive are you basing that off of your family size? Also, you mentioned your grocery bill $300-400 a month, did you mean to say week? (because I’m like ummm, yeah that’s impossible..lol.. and if you can feed all of them on $400 a week I’m seriously IMPRESSED) 😲 I missed how long you’ve lived there? (Since you’re ready for your next adventure elsewhere)
Thank you! The annual income of $170k was based on statistics. However, $120k seems ideal. I spend anywhere from $120-180 on groceries bi-weekly. I buy mostly meat and items that can stretch until the next pay period. We also make enough food to have leftovers for the next day. Sometimes you have to make it work without breaking the bank. It's doable 😉 Thank you for watching!
We haven't created one as of yet, but if you're interested I guess we should 🙂. I hope your husband finds the job he is searching for. It's beautiful here!
My husband and I have been looking into moving to Hawaii just not sure of which island ect. especially with us having children so school districts are big for us and is the main determining factor as to which island to move to. I’m an Ultrasound Tech and my husband is a weirder so work as well is big!!
You left out a few important things. I’ve heard repeatedly that of the people who move from the mainland to Hawaii, 95% of those people don’t survive more than 1 to 2 years in Hawaii, and have to return to the mainland, often financially ruined. I heard that there was a lot of corruption in building that elevated mass transit, and the mass transit was started away from the downtown area and built towards the downtown area, so that the system is useless until it’s completed. If they started the mass transit system in the downtown area first, it would be gradually useful to more areas, as the system is being built. The cost of electricity is huge! I think it was about 37 cents per kilowatt hour, which is 2 to 3 times as much as other places. I also heard that when the utilities generate power with wind or solar, they can charge the same as if the power was generated with diesel, even though the cost to the utility is lower, because of the corruption between the utilities and the state legislature. I suggest that you do a video in a grocery store to give your viewers some sticker shock on prices! A dozen eggs cost 68 cents in Florida or Minnesota, compare that to $5 in Hawaii! A gallon of milk is less than $2 in Florida or Minnesota. Even a can of beans, which has a shelf life of years, and can be shipped by sea, the cheapest way to ship anything, costs about 50% more in Hawaii. I’ve also heard that Hawaii has about a one week supply of food. If the shipping lines are cut, then there’s going to be severe problems in Hawaii. So, have a personal supply of food in Hawaii, don’t live hand to mouth! I think you should show how much you’d have to pay in Hawaii for a house similar to a $700K house in Georgia. I bet a similar house in Hawaii would be about $2M to $4M. I also heard that healthcare is horrible in Hawaii! Maybe healthcare is better if you have a military connection. I heard that public education in Hawaii is horrible! A “C” student on the mainland is an “A” student in Hawaii, because they dumb down public education in Hawaii. Private schools cost about $20K per year per student in Hawaii. It’s true, that the climate in Hawaii is nothing short of fantastic! But there are so many negatives in Hawaii, that make Hawaii a better place to visit, than being a resident.
Lol, to be honest, it's not the cost of living so much. Our issues were the distance away from family and the cost to make it happen. We as a family love to travel, and Hawaii has some drastic limitations.
Hello I love love love this video! I am a Georgia native as well.... planning a honeymoon in June to Hawaii due to a passport delay... any recommendations? Any places that we should avoid or gravitate towards being “black” in Hawaii?
Hi, Chastie. Nothing is off-limits here. There are so many places to visit and see. The Four Seasons Hotel in Ko Olina is a great place to stay. As well as Kahala Hotel & Resort and Turtle Bay. Restaurants are plenty: Roy's, 53 by the Sea, La Mer, Morton's Steakhouse. I enjoyed dining at each of the restaurants mentioned, so I highly recommend them. Congratulations on your honeymoon, and good luck with your stay.
Ok, I am watching this and you said you're from Atlanta? Island life would be very hard for you because you have lived in a place with a massive international airport. Atlanta's airport is one of the best in the world with easy access to almost everywhere! Lived in Georgia myself for six years...not Atlanta. Outside of Savannah and then for a year on Jekyll Island.
Yes, city life is a different world-convenient access to just about anywhere. We lived in Pooler before we moved to Hawaii, and that was a hard adjustment as well. Savannah is very charming with rich history. So rich that you could feel some type of presence wherever you go. I enjoyed some aspects of Savannah, but we frequently drove back to Atlanta once or twice a month when need be.
@@CherelleVictoria I miss it down there especially being near the ocean but, you know how it goes. I met a nice Canadian, married him and have been in Kingston, Ontario Canada for years now....all my family is still down there so I feel how it's hard to be far away from loved ones.
Hi, Nathaniel. I'm attached to a unit on Pearl. Hopefully, your Detailer can hook you up with orders back to Oahu. Much has changed since COVID. The island life is not the same. I was stationed in Oahu from 2003-2014 and made my first PCS move to Kingsbay.
It is hard for me to answer that question. We live on a military installation, so there no out-of-pocket expenses in regards to utilities. We only pay for cable, and we use Spectrum for services. That can range anywhere from $100-250.
I moved to Kauai with my family in 1969 when I was 12. We came from Detroit Very different. But as you portrayed, lots of good, lots of challenges. The bugs are not bugs, they are feat...nah they're bugs.
Haha, yes, the bugs here are on steroids, I believe, lol. I wish to visit the other neighboring islands one day. How is Kauai? It looks gorgeous over there.
@@CherelleVictoria I grew up on Kauai and parents lived there until the end of their lives, but I live in Honolulu now. But I have been back many, many times. It is beautiful, and the people are really nice. Living there is like living in any relatively small rural community but definitely worth visiting, Lots of great things to do and see. Food options have gotten so much better than I was a kid.
Thank you for your video I am seriously thinking of moving to Hawaii with my family. The grocery prices are scaring me because I cook a lot and I will be spending a lot on groceries. I also will miss my Mexican food I hope I they sell peruano beans at the stores 😅. As a Mexican I can't live without my beans.
You're welcome. Do all the research that you can. Some people love it, and some people hate it. Yes, groceries are quite expensive here. I would encourage couponing as well. I have never heard of peruano beans lol, but I'm sure you'll find some here. Best of luck with your journey ahead. Thanks for watching!
Hi, Alicia. I am sorry for the late reply. Make sure the decision is right for you and your family. Start planning on where you would like to live and how much it is going to cost. If you are military and use your VA loan, it will be best to learn your pre-approval amount before moving to help you decide your maximum spending ability. The job market is tough as well. Consider all of your costs, including housing, groceries, flights back to the mainland, emergencies, vacations, shipping cost (vehicle, household goods, etc.), and anything else that is important to you. Good luck!

I love it!
Thanks for sharing! I always appreciate hearing from someone who lives on the island.
Thank you for the down to earth real video of yourselves and Hawaii really appreciated. You made it very relatable
You're welcome, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
I really enjoyed your honesty. I'm from California and I was thinking of moving my family to Hawaii. So, now we'll just visit and slowly make up our minds.
Thank you! I was considering moving to Hawaii, but I’m reconsidering after watching this video.
Non-military, lived here for 15+ years in total. Also moved here twice as well. I think you two summed it up very well “Keep vacation places for vacation!”
Absolutely! When you're isolated, things start to get repetitive. Thanks for watching!
This is true. I love the D.C area, but I know the cost of living is outrageous.
Moving to Maui soon and a lot of this was very helpful
Hi Brandon thanks for you honest comment , I live in New York and im not sure if id be able to survive had it not been for affordable housing
Thank you for sharing. You have to be where your most comfortable. Thank you for watching!
I love the Big Island except when you get when you get old and require surgery you have to fly to Oahu.
I feel bad for your husband. You made him miss an opportunity of a lifetime!
Stationed on Guam currently, but looking at going to Hawaii next!! I love the island life and not ready to leave it. The pros and cons are very similar to being here on GU, expect it's much smaller here. Thank you for the awesome video!
Miryam, probably not the best idea. i can see why Hawai'ans are frustrated with all of us .
What a beautiful, precious couple you are! Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
Thank you for watching and your kind words, Doris. ♥️
Nice video! We moved to Oahu about three months ago and I can relate to much you're talking about! And yep, also spotted some flying COCKROACHES!!
Me and my husband is thinking about moving there thank you for this
You're welcome! Good luck on your future endeavors.
This was an excellent video. Thanks so much!!! I have been providing therapy for the past 9 years here. 🌺
That's Awesome, Rhonda. You've been here for a while now. You have more strength than I do, lol.
Thanks for the honest and thorough review! Best wishes to you.
You're welcome, and thank you for watching.
Yes! The Centipedes in my home CONSTANTLY! I ask my neighbors about how to get rid of them and they just look at me as if I need to get used to it! The ONLY reason I regret moving from an apartment to a house
omg what do you use to kill them and where do they come from
We have only had at least three in the home. We called Ecolab to spray the house, and seldomly see them. However, I will never get use to them EVER!!
Oh wow! Times have definitely change. And yes, it certainly gets cooler here at night. Thank you for sharing and thanks for watching!
@@CherelleVictoria No recorded snow falls on O'ahu during the 20th century. But it does hail on very rare occasions.
I'm sure the change in weather would be nice.

SUCH GREAT ADVICE.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video. I’m in London and always thinking wish I could trade this existence in for the that island life in Hawaii. So, this has shaped up my my thinking! Blessings for sharing. 🙏
You're welcome! I lived in England in my younger days. I wouldn't mind trading places with you. It is always nice to travel, and see the world.
@@CherelleVictoria
Hi Cherelle, That's cool, so you know London in that sentimental way.
Keep safe!
This was very informative and gave a lot of information that other videos did not. Thank you for sharing!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching!
I'm pcs'ing to Oahu in 12 days. Very informative video, especially from a military perspective. I appreciate it

Really appreciate your video. Thank you!!
You're welcome! Thank you for watching!
Loved this video, was honest and accurate, mahalo for making it.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, so thank you for watching!
Thanks for making this video. lovely couple.
Our pleasure!
Thank you for your honesty. I am looking forward to a visit with my family.
I'm sure you will enjoy it. Thank you for watching!
I dunno if we live on the same island or not. But once you get out of Honolulu and are traveling H1 WB you DEFINITELY see people flyin 80 through traffic going towards Kapolei. Crazy HI drivers! :)
I've seen it too! Especially people weaving in and out of traffic, smh. I rarely drive in that direction, but when I do I'm always on the lookout.
@@CherelleVictoria yes girl! I used to live in town then moved to makaha. Driving here is like The Hunger Games! :)
😂😂😂 So true! Where is HPD when you need them? They are never in sight.
I love the beach, camping and weather
The monorail “to be continued” 🤣🤣 THAT PART!!
Yes! 🤣🤣🤣
I forgot to add most local people have military ties my son is in the reserve my dad and and grandfather are all army and somewhat tied to military and not only that working on base gives me stability in work more than what i got from outside barbershops
Thanks for the good video! Currently on Guam and headed to Hawaii in a few months!
I have never traveled to Guam. Perhaps one day I could visit. Good luck on your next chapter!
The school part was extremely helpful
Thank you! I'm glad it provided you a tad bit of clarity. Thanks for watching!
“Da bugs!” Lol!!!

I have visited my daughter 7 times. She’s on the big island. Everything is soooo pricey there and the locals are not very aloha. The locals are very prejudice. If it weren’t for my daughter and grandkids living there , I would never return to such an unfriendly pricey place.

We were in Maui, but we definitely would like to visit oahu.
I really appreciate this video! You guys are such a funny and adorable couple! I'm curious do you happen to know more on homeschooling in Hawaii?
Thank you, Anna!! I don't much. However, you must fill out a form 4140 (Letter of Intent) for your homeschool in zoned for your neighborhood. Once submitted, may begin homeschooling at any time. From what I understand from parents who share the same interests as yours, some highschools will not accept homeschool credits. So that's something to look into. However, many parents suggest that you look into Power Homeschool/Acellus (K-12). The program is fully accredited with teachers who can monitor student assignments. I hope this provides you a tad bit of insight. I hope it works out for you, and thank you for watching. ♥️
Loved this video!!
Thank you, Julissa!
Most locals avoid Waikiki like the plague. Locals live everywhere else.
Seems you have my cousin dance group on your channel 3:33 did u enjoy the show? Well I don’t like the flies either. But I stay in 2500sqft house for 3 yrs on my own. But about to throw a backpack on sell everything and travel. But hey nice channel

Yes, most days are horrible. I make sure to be home around 2 PM if I can make it.

Is the Commissary affordable?
I would say so compared to the civilian prices outside the gate. You'll have to learn how to shop around. COSTCO is better for produce in my opinion.
Do they have the same federal benefits there like SSI, or social security? what is the average rent? thank you!
To best answer your question, I would advise you to contact the Hawaii Social Security Field Office. As far as rent is concerned, feel free to visit the link below. Thanks for watching. realhawaii.co/blog/cost-of-living-hawaii-2020

what about black women and hair? natural products, getting your braided, is it possible? what do you do to maintain your crown?
Hi, Furtyle. There are plenty of black women who braid hair on the island. I have not had my hair braided by any of them, but I've seen their work, and they do a great job. Braids are more expensive here than the mainland. There is a black-owned hair salon here as well. The salon is called Salon MeAmour, and Ebony is the stylist and owner. Great video and your perspective. When you say $170k annual income to survive are you basing that off of your family size? Also, you mentioned your grocery bill $300-400 a month, did you mean to say week? (because I’m like ummm, yeah that’s impossible..lol.. and if you can feed all of them on $400 a week I’m seriously IMPRESSED) 😲
I missed how long you’ve lived there? (Since you’re ready for your next adventure elsewhere)
Thank you! The annual income of $170k was based on statistics. However, $120k seems ideal. I spend anywhere from $120-180 on groceries bi-weekly. I buy mostly meat and items that can stretch until the next pay period. We also make enough food to have leftovers for the next day. Sometimes you have to make it work without breaking the bank. It's doable 😉 Thank you for watching!

Please don't come here..locals no need more mainlanders
My husband and I have been looking into moving to Hawaii just not sure of which island ect. especially with us having children so school districts are big for us and is the main determining factor as to which island to move to. I’m an Ultrasound Tech and my husband is a weirder so work as well is big!!
I AGREE WIT DA “AROUND DA ISLAND TRIP” LOL…..IM WAIANAE BORN & RAISED, TIRED OF GOING IN CIRCLES, CANT WAIT TO MOVE TO THE MAINLAND
Haha, I'm glad someone understands. The mainland welcomes you!
Wow! 68 cents for eggs and $2 for milk?! We r in the Midwest and it’s $5 for milk and $4 for eggs. That’s amazing
Haha, I knew those vibes I was seeing was not the I love it here vibe lol. It sounds like it be slightly different if cost of living was reasonable

I moved to Oahu but now I live in Maui. I'm not going back to the mainland🤣
I dont blame you, lol!
I don’t think I missed it but how do utility costs look? Internet/power/water
It is hard for me to answer that question. We live on a military installation, so there no out-of-pocket expenses in regards to utilities. We only pay for cable, and we use Spectrum for services. That can range anywhere from $100-250.
Hmmmmm it’s a lot to think about
I moved to Kauai with my family in 1969 when I was 12.
Thank you for sharing, Brad. It sounds breathtaking, and inviting. Kauai will be on list for sure.
I’m planning to join the Air Force National Guard or Reserve in California, then maybe pcs to Hawaii for a bit
You'll enjoy it! Hickam is a nice base, and has its own beach access.
@@CherelleVictoria awesome!
$170k ? could you break that down a bit please, my brother and I are planning on moving there soon and I’ll love to get the financials right.
It what regard? Housing here in Hawaii? I want to make sure I answer correctly.
Can you give more advice on couples wanting to retire there?
Good luck!
