Also in the final destination 2, the highway drive scene reminds , how a normal drive can end us instantly in a tragedy. It is definitely not possible to stop thinking about the crash when we find us driving alongside a massive truck carrying something heavy.
@@bae8138 You gotta admit the parents being slapped was kind of funny since Sam Raimi uses Slapstick Comedy as an influence for the humor in his movies. So it's no wonder that it can be kind of funny at the same time.
Midsommar's opening filled me with so much dread. Simply because something like that could actually happen in real life and HAS happened. Some people are just born sick, and unfortunately, the family who wants to love them ultimately pays the price. Sinister's opening is the scariest though.
Not gonna lie, when I saw the first promos and learned what the movie was about and then saw the kids, I thought "those kids are gonna get someone killed." I get it, they're kids, but even within the realm of the movie it had been made expressively clear that loud noise was bad. The dad even took the batteries out of the toy to avoid noise. What happens? One of the kids puts the batteries back, the kid plays with the loudest damn thing in the area, made all the louder by the lack of any other noise, and draws the monsters there. Sorry not sorry but that kid could have gotten everyone killed because he failed to follow a simple instruction.
I watched Ghost Ship when I was about 11. That opening scared me for weeks. 20 years later, it only leaves a chill down my spine. And I refuse to ever go on a cruise.
Glad to see Ghost Ship here. Though it wasn't so good but that opening right there deserves the number one spot. As a kid I turned off the TV instantly after seeing that and never went back to complete the DVD.
20 minutes, not an hour. As much as I love the first 20 minutes of the original WASC, I hate the rest of it. Too slow and boring and the killer ends up as just a weird pathetic guy. The newer version is a better movie.
Honestly, even with the janky animatronic shark, Jaws still holds up beautifully to this day. If not for the clothing styles and the fact that everyone is smoking everywhere (seriously, I was born in '94, so I'm not used to seeing people smoke in a hospital) I could easily for get this movie came out in '75
My all time favorite horror movie. One of Sam Ramies best films imo. Pacing, premise, casting and gross! Give the unrated version a watch. Its a perfect movie.

Jada Pinkett Smith’s opening to her demise in the sequel is great as well. The actress in the scream series, um, she was so-so but in 2022’s Scream, I thought she died but she didn’t. Scream 4, definitely my favorite my horror opening. It’s not every day that a horror director would have big list celebrities die off in a movie that’s a movie

The newer version with Camilla Belle is a lot better. The first 20 minutes of the original is great, but the rest of the movie is a snore-fest. The newer version takes that first 20 minutes and makes it a night of terror. Also, Camilla as Jill is a lot tougher than Carol Kane and the stranger is a lot creepier.
The opening of Scream screwed me up when I was younger. The mom crying out and the cut to her daughter butchered and hanged from a tree was so unsettling for me.
The opening scene of the very first Candyman where he gets his arm cut off & is left for dead at a construction site. That was absolutely creepy! Good upload today.
Ghost Ship has arguably one of the best, if not THE BEST opening ever, in a horror movie. Sadly, that is where the magic ends and the rest of the movie, although watchable, is okay at best!
Halloween is still my favorite. There is very little gore in that movie - it is just plain scary. The motiveless and seemingly unkillable Michael is a scary guy.
One of my favorite opening scenes from a horror movie of recent years has to go to The Invisible Man (2020). Such a tense sequence, and Elizabeth Moss sells it so well.
When I first seen the intro to the evil Dead I was blown away by it. I was used the campy vibe from the old evil deads and was definitely scary and it's nice to see it get recognition.
I watch it regularly. I always find something new that I love about it. The fact that it still holds the test of time will always, with utmost respect make it the most underrated horror film of all time. And everyone loves it...daily conversation about it isn't enough 🤣🤣
That character was a key inspiration for Marilyn Manson's first two releases: "Portrait of An American Family" (1994) and "Smells Like Children" (95)...

Even though there's no blood or death in that scene the opening of "Dawn of the Dead" (1978) should be on this list. With the Zombie Apocalypse still in its infancy everybody in an emergency FCC station has a simultaneous nervous breakdown!
I just now noticed that they gave away Betsy Palmer right at the beginning of the film with the guy acting like a child being caught by an adult. It would only leave Betsy to be the killer as she is the oldest in the film next to of course Ralph...
Im still surprised Darkness Falls fails to make an opening list. The pace and creep factor made it amazing. Had it kept that same disturbing pace throughout the movie it would have been amazing. Still liked it but not as unsettling afterwards.
The opening of Scream is amazing. It perfectly captures the feeling of being trapped. It starts out sweet and almost cheesy, but quickly descends into a game of cat and mouse with Casey ultimately losing. Side note: it’s not a movie, but if we want to talk about scary openings in horror entertainment, we need to mention the opening to the Michael Jackson Thriller video. It’s much like the Scream opening, with starting out cheesy and romantic, but slowly becomes terrifying. That scene in my opinion is way more scary than anything else on this list.
28 Weeks Later might deserve the top spot. That stuff is nightmare level. Also weird how it feels like night then you realize they are hiding in the day boarded up. Just a very nerve racking, flat out scary opening scene...
I'll reiterate my previous statement, Wes Craven is my favorite director. He was the best at creating scary opening scenes. Dawn of the Dead (2004) watching the little neighbor girl tear Ana's boyfriend's throat out, watching him bleed to death, seeing him turn & attack Ana.

iconic
I remember after watching the movie we had to take the highway home and everyone was silent lol
Facts
You make good points…but i find the openings of the first and third movies scarier, personally.
Scream, Jaws, and IT definitely deserve their spots given.
You got that right!
The opening scene from 1984's 'A Nightmare on Elm Street ' is definitely one of the scariest.
Indeed. Classic horror movies be having the best opening scenes.
Wes Craven was an absolute power house of scary movie openings!
Its just not scary
And the music ... You know that song anywhere ... It don't matter what you're watching you know that music when you hear it

And I refuse to ever go on a cruise.
Was that the scene with the wire that decapitated everyone
The only good scene in the film. That and the little girl explaining what happened to everyone.
Made me nervous as hell when I went on a cruise almost 5 years ago.
Great list! Glad you remembered Ghost Ship that’s my fave! Also House on Haunted Hill 1999 and Thirteen Ghosts should have been on here!

So many beautiful opening scenes... Usually they are a way of telling you exactly what kind of mess you are about to get into.
Great to see "When a Stranger Calls" getting some love. The first hour is legendary, with some fabulous, unexpected jump scares.

The Invisible Man (2019) and The Grudge (2004) had great scary intros.
The opening scene from 'City of the Living Dead'/'The Gates of Hell' should be on here. Italian horror from the 70s and 80s was on another level.
the opening scene in Jaws(1975) sets the tone for the movie and for the shark
Ghost ship has one of the best opening scene in horror cinema
And is one of the worst horror movies as a whole.
It’s been 5 years since the ‘It’ remake came out.
The opening scene became even darker than the original 1990 version indeed.
not a "remake" new adaptation
it's not original, that actually happened on the book

Final Destination seeing the events of The Plane Exploding in a vision, then watching it play out in real life.
