    This song is NOT political😑🙄
This song is an ode to his parents (he lost both of them within a year when he was 12/13 years old) and an ode to the 90s when our country created the genre Happy Hardcore. You can't go more Dutch than that.
It's ok if you don't like it, but you could've been a bit more respectful.

    @NinaHassan-in1io 2 месяца назад +17

Actually this music style was created in the Netherlands and is one of the biggest export products of the country. So an ode is totally appropriate.
Here’s a fun fact about the gabber culture that is finally getting it’s recognition in a main stream cheasy festival such as Eurovision.
The culture was rooted in multicultural youth in Rotterdam finding a way to expres themself. ‘Gabber’ as you should know means ‘friend’ referring to the unification of community.
However the sun culture was looked upon with arrogance for years by folks well, kind of with an attitude as yourself. But it never stopped them from creating their own sound, which thanks to Paul Elstak (in the video who you missed) founder of the Happy hardcore style that made this sun culture acceptable for the ignorant.
Joost is giving the same message: don’t look down on others, don’t be ignorant, at the end of the day we are all humans in search of the same.
And the gabber culture is redeemed by having a place on the Eurovision stage and we salute it. This is the typical sound of the rise of Europe, and you may be over it. But if I understand correctly you’re not European so this message may not be for you.
My message for you though: get your head out of your own ass and try to be open to new experiences, you’re projecting a vey negative attitude about your personal frustration around political issues the Dutch entry is no part of.

    • @yairmohr

But I can assure you, I would never be saying stuff like ''redeeming'' to others, if again- my country was in that state. Be better, and be ashamed, damn.

@@yairmohr no. It’s actually my profession. This is absolutely social acknowledgment for a sub culture that represented the emancipation of (multi cultural) youth in 90’s yet was suppressed and devaluated. The National and open acknowledgment of the most influential modern day sun culture took long enough. From cultural historical perspective this is a very interesting theme of influence in the perception of generation X and being researched in regards to how this subconsciously played a role in societal attitude and value shaping of this generation in the Netherlands.
You may not understand, observe or think about that, yet that doesn’t make sociology ignorant.

As happy as this song sounds, it's a sad song.
    Actually, he describes his life in a few minutes;
In the first verse, he talks about losing everything. An important part is the death of his parents when he was 12/13 years old.
In the second verse, he talks about how alone and lonely he is. He also says that he needed help because of depression and being homeless and apparently insufficiently helped I don't understand the reference to stromai (bad in french).
The leonardi da vinci (The Last Supper) scene may refer to one of his songs in which he sings that he is god.
If I remember correctly, his father once told him that he should keep writing poetry.
The house with the mill is the place in which he grew up (with all the shit) and possibly burning it down, taking a new step into a new world without borders in which he can do whatever he wants

Here we have an israeli talking about "europapa" as a political song, yet his own country is sending the absolutely most political song this year, a song that got rejected 3 times by EBU and just did some small changes to get accepted. The political message is still there, the writers have said it outload. And, Eden's dress just got banned and cant't be used on Eurovision cause it was too political. How does it feel to be so clueless ? Hmm ?
It's about his father (who died to cancer when he was 12) and mother (who died a year later to a cardiac arrest).
His father (papa) told him to write and perform and see the world (Europe) because there are no borders accept for the human made borders...
So after his parent's died he went to travel and see Europe, that's why he mentions the countries he mentions in the song.
He mentions Stromae (Paul Van Haver) because the song Papaoutai is about living your life without a pappa.
Joost acknowledges the bravery of Stromae to sing about this ( "dat doet ie goed ey !" )
The pretty house with the windmill you see burning at the end is the representation of the end of that part of his life.
Half of his life he tried to cope with the loss of his parents, he feels it's time to move on and start anew.
So, how about the song now ?

There is no grain political in the song he sing about his grief and he travels all around europe and cant find a place to stop griefing about his parents. This music reminds dutchies and other people of the olden days and for the netherlands this is a really big gamble to send in because normally we send in some piece thats either uberpopy and not at all intresting we had some gambles with piano like dunkan a few years ago i think we gotten a good person to represent the netherlands. but music is objective art some might not like it like you. Also he kept contradicting himself in the comments when a lot of people pointed out that he was obviously being biased against Italy saying that he had basically not liked one single entry from Italy. And he plays the expert, too. Very political? What does he know about Europe? Nothing! After all he does not live in Europe ... how could he know what is considered political in Europe? And I am saying this as someone who does not particularly like this song, but would never claim something as disparaging, ignorant and simply false in such a confident way.

You should probably hear it more often. I didn't like it at all the first time but after the second or third day I couldn't get it out of my head. I have seen like about a hundred positive and enthousiastic RUclips reactions to this song and you are probably the only one who doesn't get it. It's much more profound than you would think; it's Joosts journey to let go of the loss of both his parents as a child. Hence the burning building in the end. It represents closure. And last but not least: it takes guts to send in a song that a lot of young people (who might vote) these days may not understand (because they never lived in the nineties) but we did it anyway. No run of the mill Swedish pre-fabricated year-in year out same old drivel (with a few exceptions of course) but a song that will surprise many. And of course there are the bookmakers. Over the past decade they were almost never wrong, maybe by a few places up or down, and Joost Klein is at this moment placed number 3. So inform yourself before giving your judgment.

But I believe that precisely because of the work as a whole, and due to the weaker scenario at Eurovision this year, Europapa should reach the top 5 without much effort.

I haven't read all the comments but it seems like nobody bothered to explain the actual meaning to you. This song is about an orphaned child traveling to try and run from the pain ("I lost everything except time". But he can't run from it. He's in Germany, but still alone. He's in Italy, still feels the pain. He's also trying to get help with his grief and pain, but it's hard to get help (pressure on the healthcare system making it hard to get therapy). Joost Klein himself lost his parents at a young age (12/13). He used to watch Eurovision with his parents and told them he'd be on that stage one day. His dad told him it is a world without borders/limits. So the EU is not the subject of the song, but it is the backdrop of the song. At the end, there is a picture of him and his parents on fire, as well as the building, aka his foundation. As he wants to use this song to finally move on from the grief that he has been carrying. It's a form of therapy for him. The kid in the room is him at a young age, the old man is what he thinks he will become if he doesn't let go of the grief. The music style and a lot of other things (the gameboy, the posters in the room etcetera) are a throwback to his youth as well. I hope this helps to better understand why this song is not political. Whether you like the music or not is obviously not up for debate 😁

Sorry but this reaction video should’ve been disqualified.
A this song is not political, it’s about his very personal journey after his parents died.
When Joost was 12 his dad died of cancer and 8 months later his mother passed away from a cardiac arrest.
When they still lived his Dad told him to have a very expensive view of the world, like he says in the last part. “In the end were all humans.”
He’s singing about himself traveling all over Europe to find someone who will comfort him while he’s fighting with his grief. But as much as he is partying and meeting people in the end he’s still alone.
The end of this song is him concluding that it’s okay to be missing his parents and him finally finding closure letting go of his past yet keeping the good memories.
