It was nice of Hyundai to place the rear spring separate from the shock. Usually its inside and more difficult. This car is pretty easy to work on and much appreciated by the DIY crowd.
These dudes are an absolute Godsend. Doing repair and maintenance on the obscure (compared to your civics and corollas ) Korean brand that is just now becoming much more common and somewhat competitive with bigger brands
Thanks for the vid. I was able to replace them and used the same struts you recommended. The shaking finally stopped and it feels stable. Great job guys
You guys have saved me so much money! The shop time here (small mechanic shop) is 110.00 an hr. With a hoist you can replace rear shocks in 15 minutes. On the ground it takes a little longer. Still worth saving the 110.00. Like paying yourself.
Can you make a video on replacing the front struts on Hyundai Elantra? Thanks to your videos I have DIY'ed so many repairs and maintenance on my 2012 Elantra. Love your channel!!!
Do not use RED thread locker. If you ever need to disassemble those parts again, you will need torch to heat the part to at least 500 degrees F to get them apart again. Those bolts should not need any thread locker if they are torqued correctly, but if you still want to use some, use the BLUE thread locker.
Great video! Thanks for showing how easy the task is. Do you have a video on replacing the front struts for the same car? Thanks very much and Toodles!
Hi Romanita I just purchased this car and want to do the same thing. How did it go for you (if you dont mind me asking)? I hope you have been safe and hopeful during these times. God Bless!

Great video. Helped me replace the rears in my 13 Elantra Limited at 70k miles. Not only did I have the wandering/bouncy/out of control rear in turns like you mention, but the OEM crappy shocks actually cupped my tires severely after only 15K miles from the poor damping. basket ball effect. I hope these shocks (and new tires tomorrow) solve the problem, because I'm not replacing tires every 15k miles. Why would they offer suck crappy shocks from the factory? I used the torque specs for the shock bolts and did not use loctite...kinda useless with all that WD40 over the bolts, and you shouldnt need loctite if you torque them to 87 ft./lb.
I own that same Hyundai Elantra, but a 2013 model. Do you have the video on replacing the front struts?? I already replaced my rear shocks by myself like in that video!
Nice vids bro. I have question I put lowering spring today. And then I realized I put the bump stop upside down on the front driver side. Would this be a problem?
NOTE: Please, DONOT Use to LOSE Tire NUTS with a TORQUE WRENCH. USE, spray lubricant let it set for few minutes. Then lose nuts with a BREAKER BAR. This is a GOOD VIDEO keep it up. Sincerely, Mr. Jaime V.
I do not have a hoist. Can I replace the shocks on my 2010 elantra along with the upper mounts? when I can only raise the car about 12 " off the ground. Other wise I would have to pay someone the labour. The problem is that I may not be able to remove the bolts holding the upper mounts. That is the problem. Any answers? Thanks
I just did it and it took 30-40 minutes tops. Very simple. As far as driving, the car is much more steady and stable on turns. I have been testing it by accelerating rapidly around the u-turns under overpasses near my house. It handles noticeably better. For the price of two shocks and 30-40 minutes, it is well worth it.
Thanks for sharing your videos my friend..I have a question: What would be the proper torque for Sprak Plugs on a 2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring?..Thanks again.
When you pull out the shocks you keep referring to them as struts. Are you accidentally using them interchangeably? I'm trying to figure out if this is a video about changing struts or shocks.
Yeah and they pay some kid 15$ a hour to do it too so sick of shop rates and how they use a computer with loaded hours for charges but not actual time biggest rip off in the world it really doesn’t take that much equipment nor knowledge to do most auto repairs I maintain my elantra and my duramax classic with RUclips and for the most part a socket set….I really don’t understand the rates these shops charge people sometimes it’s a 150-200$ job but of course they wanted 3 and that’s likely American more like 400 Canadian here haha
Yes kyb are better but more stiff. Monroe are the bottom of the barrel but almost every part store has them. If you are looking to save money go with gabriel not monroe.
Looked easy except could not remove top bolt. the rubber bushing would not let the bolt turn and spent almost three hours trying to get it out. Ended up having to take to shop to have it done. Took them two mechanics, melting the bushing off the bolt and vice grips to get it out. Also had to rethread the bolt.
I think he's trolling. He used the TQ wrench to loosen the lug nuts, then used the breaker bar to tighten the shock fastener and never TQ'd it.. haha Doesnt makes sense.
First you don't use a torque wrench in the reverse direction unless it is calibrated for it. The second thing is you don't use a torque wrench for loosing nuts / bolts!!!
@@matthewroseen7453 I broke that weld piece off the back side and air hammer the bolt out then used a 26mm wrench to hold the square nut to tighten the bolt back up
Thanks for posting these, however without the units of measurements these numbers are dangerous. Rear shock bolt to body is 98.1 ~ 117.7N.m (10.0 ~ 12.0kgf.m, 72.3 ~ 86.8lb-ft) Rear shock nut to rear carrier is 98.1 ~ 117.7N.m (10.0 ~ 12.0kgf.m, 72.3 ~ 86.8lb-ft) Here is a link for your own reference...www.hemanual.org/replacement-1719.html
@Jonathan A I know it is, Mr. RUclips engineer. There are shims that you put behind the rear hubs that can change the toe. If you look up rear alignment for 2012 Elantra on Google, there are forums explaining how people have made their own shims or took it to alignment places that have shim kits. If you put enough shims and make the toe bear zero, the rear won't move. However the alignment graph will show red.
@Jonathan A I could have called you worse, but I didn't. I apologize for hurting your feelings. Not cause I mean in it, just cause you're still upset about it.

I agree, the only thing I put red on is the steering joint retaining bolt because they usually call for it.

Hello friend, could you tell me how are those amorous, soft or hard?
Hello from Canada, do you recommend using shock absorber bellows when installing these? Curious if exposure to ice and salt would warrant this?
What is part number of that KYB shock so that i would get the right shock online
What do you prefer for rear shock absorbers- Monroe or KYB

I change it but it didn’t help We have to change the axle bushing this is with the Dealership recommend and they did update for the bushing
Hi, have you had the bushing changed? How much did they charge for that?
Thanks for sharing your videos my friend..I have a question: What would be the proper torque for Sprak Plugs on a 2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring?..Thanks again.
The repair manual says 15-21 ft/lbs. I just did mine recently and split the difference at 18 ft/lbs. Do NOT use anti-seize either.
Sorry, I missed that you have a touring. Mine is a GLS stick...disregard.
Have someone changed rear bushing. On torsion?
I have a 2017 Elantra SE and when I hit the KYB Shock link in the description it says "This part will not fit your 2017 Hyundai Elantra"
connect the top first when reinstalling. Makes life a lot easier =P
Good job, nice and easy 👍
Red loctite seems a lil excessive on the bolts. Blue maybe.

I'm gonna replace mine soon. Just got the 2013 elantra month ago and the rear is really not stable. It's not safe at all
