  • Practicing upset stall/spin recovery in the 172. Good stuff to know how to do!

Very cool. Trying to schedule my own spin training down at RHV. C172 is a good idea since most people aren't flying aerobatic planes. Had a good chuckle hearing your initial reaction. And boy ...once spin developed you were losing 500ft in about 3 seconds. wow.
    Thanks for sharing, Will.

I got so comfortable with spins and 500ft decent a turn that the thought of how much easier it would be for decent to land to just pull over the numbers at altitude and let her spin....lol...not an approved established approach, I guess

Finally, another pilot in a RUclips video saying exactly what I would be saying in my first spin. This is great. I botched a power on stall in training once and the resulting wingover/incipient spin still has me questioning my existence.

It’s an eye opening experience to say the least

Only once while some else was flying from the right seat I have experienced a full power on accelerated spin from cruise speed. If not for my resuming control & thorough spin avoidance and recovery training, we'd be dead and the tail would of snapped for sure.

It is extremely unwise to use a 172 for spin training....I wouldn't fly it on a bet.....unseen stress damage could very well ompromise structural integrity....USE a 152 or an aerobat

An aerobatic plane would probably spin better, but this 172 is approved for spins in the utility category, and since that's the plane I was planning to do a lot of instructing in, it made the most sense to spin it instead of something else.

@@WillThePilot if Cessna says it's okay, it's okay...that's what I love about aviation... never ending training and learning. I've flown near perfect flights from start to finish, but there is always far more than enough room for improvement

After further consideration, I'll still stand by my assertion that international spins in a 172 is not within my perimeters of "good judgment" They can be used for intentional spins within its UTILITY designation, but it is conditional as to fuel loads and C/G considerations. Ergo, I presume you are meeting those criteria and all is well. But to do so in a rental or in an aircraft beyond one's control ... who is to say that the aircraft was flown in or out of the criteria, and thus possibly not within the boundaries and limitations of a UTILITY Catorization. Undetected weakening of critical elements of construction.and control surfaces is highly possible.
