Ian Fleming's Initial Resistance to Sean Connery as James Bond

- Apparently, Ian Fleming didn’t approve of Sir Sean Connery playing James Bond in the first movie, Dr. No. The reason? Connery was, in many ways, the complete opposite to Fleming’s vision of Bond. He was Scottish, while Bond was British, working class instead of upper class, and rugged instead of refined. However, Connery’s portrayal of the agent definitely won over Fleming. The author even added Scottish ancestry to Bond’s character in a later novel. Unfortunately though, Fleming didn’t have nice things to say about the rest of the movie. He felt extremely disappointed by the overall film version of Dr. No. He called it, “Dreadful. Simply Dreadful.”

Babe Scotland is in Britain, you mean ‘he wasn’t English’ x
Not Londonian citizen, apparently. But the movie trailer is matching. The episode when they came rampage his family house,in the campain; This was happening in some kind of Scottish landscape, right?🤔

After sixty years he's still the greatest James Bond ever.
I'd have to say Craig stole the show with a fantastic 5 film run but Seannery was my favorite up to that point, even more so than Brosnan which was the era I grew up watching.
@@scorpionwins6378no. Most of Craig's were not great. Casino Royale was decent. Haven't seen No Time to Die yet, but the other two I saw and they were not good.
Scottish is British . Scottish isn't English but he's a British agent so it's fine.
The voiceover is British so how are they getting that.
Its funny because James Bond is based on the 22nd SAS (hence the love of expensive watches) and the 22nd SAS is Scottish from its founder all the way down.
As if Britain's Elite have ever been anything but Scottish lmao...who the fuck do these upper class english snobs from the south (limp wristed trust fund kids) think they're fucking kidding?.
American 007 soon, please. stole every American superhero role, so it's only fair.
It's funny how there have been several attempts to do an American version of a James Bond type super spy . And of course there's lots of parodies. But notging has managed to emulate the success of 007. It's one of those weird things. Even Rambo and Mission Impossible is lagging well behind. And there's the trick of changing the lead actor too. I don't think any film franchise has handled that trick so perfectly?
The majority of Scots don't class themselves as British.
Sean was the best Bond.
I had a girlfriend at 30 yrs age. She said she would do Sean Connery or Clint Eastwood of they were 90.
@@shawnmclean7932that's awesome as an older gentleman gives me hope 😂😂😂
Yeah and Sean Connery was the only one with actual military experience , he actually served in the royal navy.
David Niven played Bond once, and Niven was a Lt Colonel and saw active service.
I'm pretty sure Roger Moore served in the royal navy too.
Connery dropped out very early due to stomach ulcers.
Roger Moore was an army captain.
@@tc98826 that’s the cover story , but we all know he got recruited by mi6.
You need to check your facts. Roger Moore was an officer in Germany. And George Lazenby was in the Australian Army. However, Connery and Moore were both conscripted, while Lazenby Enlisted, mskine him the only Bond who was a soldier by chosen profession.
Sean Connery is my favorite Bond.
Sean Connery WAS BOND!!!!
Absolutely 💯

Our passports definitely still say, 'British' 😂
I actually liked Dr. No, it’s my personal fav of Connery run as Bond

Ian Fleming may not have been over-enthusiastic about Sean Connery or the first movie but I'm sure he was more than generously compensated...
That said, I am extremely grateful to Ian Fleming for his timeless creation...
And this is why Terence Young was so crucial to those early movies. He took Sean under his belt to make suave as hell.
In the Bond books, James Bond was six foot, 145 pounds, Black hair, with grey-blue eyes. The Bond actor that fits closet to Fleming’s description was Pierce Brosnan, down to the grey-blue eyes.
Probably the most polished bond. Too bad the studio decisions killed his timing as James bond.
I think Dalton looked more like Bond.
145 pounds??? Well he wasnt a brawler with that weight
Bond also had a distinctive scar in the books.
@@ricardocantoral7672You're not wrong. Dalton has blue eyes as well
Connery was great as Bond. Classy but at home in the woods or a bad neighborhood.
It only lasted a moment, In tribute to Connery he made Bond's father Scottish in his novel OHMSS
Fleming was writing OHMSS novel at his residence in Jamaica while Dr. No was being filmed there
Fleming also has Scottish ancestry
How ironic that OHMSS was the first mainline film to not have Connery as Bond.
Worked out well for years later skyfall house based in Scotland was perfect location setting
Wrong book. It was in You Only Live Twice that Bond's Scottish link was revealed. In the book's storyline it is believed, erroneously, that Bond has been killed. An obituary is published in The Times which tells readers that Bond's father was from Glencoe, worked for Vickers, the small arms manufacturer and that he was named Andrew Bond and that James Bond's mother was Swiss. So,in fact Bond had no English blood in him at all! @@luka-ty3hr
He is a real james bond
Sean Connery was the quintessential blue color man who is James Bond. It's not though what Ian Fleming intended but it was perfect at the time.
With out Sean Connery - James bond would not be what it is today! Sean Connery and Daniel Craig are my favorite bonds.....because they are rugged, and well, Manly!!!
With the last bond film, it made me appreciate Brosnan bond more, he really was pretty cool and kick ass as bond.
Video maker: "He was Scottish rather than British."
Reality: Scots are Brits. British is a nationality.
Rightly, Connery was Scottish and not ENGLISH.
Ian Fleming was a hypocrite considering one of the main inspirations for his James Bond novels was Duško Popov.
He's actually Irish by default
To me he is the one and only!❤
Imagine what he'd think about Lazemby Dalton Brosnan or Craig .
Sean Connery got Ian Fleming opinion surprisingly wrong. It was a very right choice!
A real man knows how to clean up nicely while never minding getting his hands dirty. Sir Sean Connery's James Bond is indeed quite manly and something all gentlemen should be.
Wouldn't you expect an agent of the Secret Intelligence Service to be "manly"?
Scotland makes up part of the British Isles, so he was as British as anyone from any other part of Britain.
"Dreadful, simply dreadful"
I can at least understand how an author would take umbrage to the vast differences of the movie to the novel. . . But come on, Dr.No is such a landmark film. It sets up Bond, Mi6, Spectre, the women, and exotic locations. It's also smoothly paced and edited interestingly. A true classic
Fleming's novels meticulously describe James Bond's Scottish-Swiss background. They reveal that his father, Andrew Bond, was from Glencoe, Scotland, and his mother, Monique Delacroix, hailed from the Canton of Vaud, Switzerland.
It always makes me laugh when people actually suggest Idris Elba for the role of Bond.
Scottish is British!!! ...Doh !
The title sequence is worth the ticket entry alone.
What's wrong with a rugged bond?
The Newspaper Comics of James Bond looked remarkably like Sean Connery before even getting cast as 007.
Fleming was annoyed by the humor of the movies.
I read iin a biography of Fleming that a woman friend told him "This is your James Bond," looking at a picture of Connery.
TRUE FACT: It was Cubby Brocolli's wife.
All one has to do is read the book to see why Fleming was disenchanted with the film version. (But few movies do justice to good books.)
Dr. No was actually very faithful to the Source Material, A lot more than other Bond Adaptations.
In Fact, In some ways It's an Improvement. They left out a few Silly Elements from the Novel, Including a Scene where Bond battles an Octopus.
I don't get why people always have to state who they think is the best Bond. I mean they all have their individual charms.... IMO
Sean Connery was the best James Bond forever.
when sean let his eyebrows grow naturally, he looked 100% north italian like in the thumbnail
The one and only!!!!
Ian Flemming's favorite actor was Cary Grant which was Albert (cubby) Broccoli's as well. The problem was Grant was far too older, he passed on the part because he had previously played similar characters in "to catch a thief "and "North by Northwest." Connery actually learned from Grant who helped him prepare for the role.
Sean Connery was brilliant , but I see Fleming's point. It wasn't until Timothy Dalton came on the scene that we saw the book Bond on the screen. He is seriously undervalued as Bond, simply because few people who watch the films have actually read the Fleming books.
I think it's really important to respect the writers of something we all love and and enjoy
It’s amazing how much of what we associate with Bond came not from Ian Fleming, but from Sean Connery. It’s no wonder he was unhappy with the financial arrangements.
Clear case of a legendary writer not having the vision to translate his character or story into a movie people actually wanted to see.
I sure approved of Sean Connery😅😅
This is actually not entirely accurate through the actual reason why in Fleming was not sure about Sean Connery, is because Connery was not an established actor at the time. Connor is bond is meant to be a more rugged character addresses entirely for comfort and function rather than fashion. Even his car is almost 20 years old in Casino Royale his watch only cost about 150 bucks at the time, his clothes are very well worn ext. Ian Fleming’s original choice for the character was actually David Niven.
Very true, however the car IS still a Bentley (albeit Bond could only afford it because it was previously a write-off and he spent all his money on the repairs and running costs) and the watch is a Rolex. However at the time they weren't that expensive. They became more expensive partly due to Bond wearing one (life imitating art). The books make it clear Bond has Champagne taste but unfortunately not the wallet to match, however as he assumes he'll die in the line if duty he never thinks more than 6 months ahead.
@@sdfilmproductions4193 i’m not entirely sure about that. Yes it is true. A lot of the brands became significantly more expensive, like the Rolex, a mariner, being the equivalent of $1200 in 1954 versus $10,000 today. But part of that I believe is actually because of the materials that go into making the watch, your mountain, Rolex submariner uses white gold, and every single model in the line, so yeah, it is going to be more expensive. Well, the James Bond of the novels does drive a Bentley, the bond of the films only is seen with a Bentley one time, in 1963 is from Russia with love. I’m not sure that’s the only reason why a bond could afford the car, but granted it has been a little while since I’ve read Casino Royale so that may be a part I’m just forgetting.
@@warrenrhinerson6373 it mentions this about the car in the novel Moonraker.....As for the Rolex, I have a Su mariner and yes you are right about the white gold being in the hour markers and hands, but Rolex actually make 1,200,000 watches a year. (Compared to Pateks 35,000 or IWC 70,000) they are mass produced and cost about $500 to make each....They just market them as rare....they're not.
Might I add how nice it is to have a civilised conversation on RUclips for once.....(How very Bond)🤵
@@sdfilmproductions4193 Hey, sorry I did noy see this until now. I do not remember that part about Moonraker, but it has been a while since I read that one as well. I will agree that Rolex watches are not are rare as people often think. However, they are still in very high demand. For reference I live near the masters golf tournament is held, arguably the biggest marketing week for Rolex since Bond stopped wearing a rolex in the 70's. The local dealer, who is a good friend of mine, even told me that Rolex watches are in such high demand that it took a minimum of seven months to get even their least popular model. Pateks and IWC do make their watches in much smaller batches but they are also much less well known. So I dont know.
I do appreciate the civilized conversation as well. It seems to be a lost art.

I passed by shoulder to shoulder in a small hallway at Technicolor Lab in NYC. Me, a typical New Yorker, I didn't even say hello. He is/was a tall fellow. He must have been coming from looking at daily takes of one of his movies. I didn't ask. 75-78. I should have said hello. Anything.
But Scottland is a part of Britain, right?
It sure is
Scottland? Where's that? You mean Scotland (one"t").
@@davidlauder-qi5zv Yes, that is what I meant.
He likened Connery to a lorry driver. Bond was from upper class English ancestry in the books whereas Connery was a rough commoner.
The producers did not know if there as going to be another Bond film. The first one was a bit of risk for the studio.
Fleming was a right twat to think that way. Connery fitted the Bond personality hundred times over. ❤❤❤
In fairness, Ian Fleming largely based Bond off his cousin.
His cousin happened to be Christopher Lee.
For all those commenting on here with surprise: Flemming wanted somebody like David Niven to play bond. It was a suave sophisticated image, and world, like is later embodied in the pink panther somewhat. Dr. No brought the series more into science fiction and of course Connery both fit that and was the greatest Bond. Though this was not I believe Flemming's intention.

If you didn’t know one of the main reason it’s popular is because From Russia with Love was President Kennedys favorite book
Fleming described Bond as looking like Hoagy Camichael😮 Wouldn't of worked. Look him up.😅
Can you elaborate?
I believe he was a Singer.
Hardly a Rugged, Good Looking Man.
Fleming was a great character developing writer, but a "dreadful" judge of good actors.
same. it felt like an old American cowboy movie half the time in Sean's movies
Scottish vs. British (English):
One of my favourite scenes of the early bond films is in ‘From Russia with Love’ where Bond and Red Grant as Nash interact at and on the train. It’s fun to watch Connery and Robert Shaw, two Scottish actors, conversing with posh English accents.
As a more or less an unknown actor Connery WAS James Bond.
The others were Roger Moore playing Bond, Daniel Craig playing James Bond, etc.
Scots are British, Sparky.
Fleming also called Connery an "overgrown stuntman," which is kind of funny even if it's not a very fair description of Sir Sean.
im reinforcing British. if it wasn't for scots youd be history.
Sean was , in my view, the most gorgeous Male who walked this earth. He just did it for me!. ❤
As a writer, I think I would simply be intrigued at someone else's notions about my work and be curious to see their interpretation, I couldn't ever believe a character from my own imagination was "sacred" in some way.
Bond in the books was way different than Bond in the movies
The best opening bullet hole sequence isn't even Sean Connery. It's Timothy Dalton(seclusive badass) Pierce Brosnan(classic Ian Flemming by the way) and Daniel Craig(most realistic) Sean Connery still best first portrail though for sure!❤❤❤
Obviously he was wrong. Sean Connery, the best James Bond ever.
Bond was based on the career of Fleming's cousin actor Christopher Lee. Had Lee not been so "unusual" looking he probably would have been the first movie Bond as well.
If he didn’t like Connery he would have hated all the others after him. Sean Connery was the best
Barry Nelson was the original James Bond and he was AMERICAN.
He played Bond on an episode of Climax where they did an Adaptation of Casino Royale.
Connery was already bald at this time so most of his movies he wore a wig. THATS A WIG! In the 60! And it’s amazing!
Imagine Flemming's reaction to Moonraker.

Connery middle class??? He was nothing of the kind! He was as working class as they come. And the character of Bond was never upper class. Where on earth did you get that idea from?

I wonder what Fleming thought of the movies being filmed in a different order from the books. And also how the early movies connected all those early villains to SPECTRE.
The only three books about SPECTRE were Thunderball, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and You Only Live Twice.
Yeah, but he was delighted with Lesenby...

Fleming was embittered because he sold the royalties to his Bond novels for a song before the movie versions took off. After Fleming’s death his widow tried for years to get a cut of the profits but failed.
