  • In this video, I break down the art of interpretation (hermeneutics) and make a case for why not everything a poet says should be trusted.

I feel like poetry and art are made to be interpreted by different people. Novels, for example, give us a full story, but I think what's so beautiful about art and poetry is how much is left unsaid, allowing each person to interpret it in their own way. What's even more beautiful is that us as human beings have different perceptions of the world, our experiences shape us and how we think, our experiences being collective yet so unique, and therefore leading to different understandings. I always argue this about art but it goes the same for poetry that it is never one-dimensional-artists and poets invite us to find our own meanings and relive the work through personal interpretation.
    Great video!

"میں" نہیں مجھ میں بچا اب "تو" ہی "تو" ہے

An extremely interesting perspective presented so well, thanks. However, wouldn't it be a bit unjust to the poet to misinterpret (or 'misinterpret') their work rather than finding a meaning as close as can be to theirrr actual and implied meaning? I mean wouldn't someone as a poet feel a bit negative about it? 🤔🤔🤔

Thank you! You raise a very important point. Critics like Shamsur Rahman Faruqi argue (and I agree with them) that the when it comes to interpreting a verse, a reader or an interpreter only owes a debt to the poem and not to the poet. This doesn't mean that they should not be grateful to the poet for producing such brilliance but rather it is to say that when it comes to deriving meaning, there is no "implied" meaning in a verse. All those meanings are equally legitimate that can come out of that poem whether the poet meant them or not (given that they do not defy the logic of the poem/verse itself). The underlying premise here is that a verse (once written) does not belong to the poet (or anyone) so when the poet interprets their own work, they too are merely a reader like us. ❤
