We arrange him in Moscow for the 3rd year on the High Holidays. And I must admit this year it was absolutely wonderful. He has very warm voice and amazing artistic expression that differs him from all other cantors. This is really a chazan that makes you feel the kdushas of the day during Yom Qippur 10-hours non-stop day service and not being bored
An amazing chazan who will probably never be equalled. Yes, he had his share of vocal problems, maybe more than most chazanim, but what an artist and what a singer. I can imagine who he had in mind at 6:35.
@TOPCANTOR No need to be disrespectful to the man. If you happen not to like him as a person that's a different story. But I don't think anyone feels his voice is not nice. The most common complaint his that he can no longer go high (never a strong point of his). He certainly puts on a more professional performance than a good many of the cantors today.
Like a sports players, a chazzan may continue even if he is not as good as he was in his prime. However, once the dropoff is drastic, he only ruins his name by continuing to perform. True, Hershtik was only 61 years old here, but he has no voice left, let alone one fit for such a great position. Adler was 7 years older than him when he took over, but Adler is still as good as ever bla"h at 74. Hershtik lost his voice very early and should not have waited till he was forced out. A real pity.

Great chazzan (out of today's crop). Has more polish than anyone I've heard. He has nicer low notes and falsetto as well than anyone today.
Retire or not - I believe he is done at the Great Synagogue. Time will tell who the final replacement is.
He wasnt thrown out, he retired.
