  • The relationship between humans and wolves is prehistoric-- today, they are some of the most highly studied animals on our planet. In this video we look at the history of wolves in the United States, and how recent hybrid events between wolves and coyotes is throwing a big wrench into our understanding of these species and their futures.

I never realized how closely related wolves and coyotes were both genetically and time scale wise, all fascinating stuff.

Interestingly, both wolves and coyotes can and have also mated with dogs.

dave freier Domestic dogs _are_ wolves. Specifically, they're a subspecies of the grey wolf, and have the taxonomic name _C. lupus familiaris_.

I think it’s pbs but there’s a good video on coy wolves that talks about them also having modern dog in them

@@Hobbsthetigeryea, we used to have problems with “wild dog packs” in my area, not in my life tho. Coy-dogs were apparently quite common and thought to be extra problematic tho I suspect they were just as varied as one pack of coyotes from another or from one dog to another.
In my life I learned that killing coyotes actually achieves the opposite of what hunters want… the more you kill them the more there will be, that’s a fact it turns out, but in my experience the more you hunt them, the more “vicious” they will be and they’ll become much smarter and harder to see/hunt.
If you have livestock and the coyotes kill them, the coyote has to go! But if they’re not killing your stock, then don’t kill them, that’s a “good pack”
They’ll teach each other to not hassle cattle. I can atest to that first hand.

@@swayback7375 it’s all super interesting! I just got done reading and watching stuff on hybrid dog/dingos in Australia and how they teach domesticate dingos in the village to not eat cattle, those same dingos often leave after a few years and return to the wild and teach other dingos/wild dogs to avoid the cattle

    I lost my shit at 13:20 - 13:32
All I can think about is Tom Gonoske talking about how big and powerful these animals are and then cut to this image of the wolf howling, pausing, looking down, and eating fuckin snow. What a doof, I love him.
"First I do the howl, then i lick the ground"

I think hybridization is better than inbreeding. As an example look at the Fennoscandian wolf population. If not for new genetic variations from lone Russian wolves our wolves would be suffering from severe inbreeding, and they still are. Here in the north of Europe there are no close relatives for the wolves to interbreed with, and most wolves that make it over our borders are shot.
Hybridization would keep the populations of wolves a lot healthier and increase the genetic diversity.

    • @samrizzardi2213

If findings in Bulgaria are any indication of what to expect, some wolves moving north into Fennoscandia may have jackal blood in them.

    • @EasterWitch
      @EasterWitch 7 лет назад +6

Cool! There might be a while until those wolves get here, but we sorely need some new blood. Now we just need the governments to stop shooting them so that they can recover :-P

Hell yeah... what should they be called though? Coyote-wolf hybrids (those that aren't contested as distinct species) get called coywolves, but what should we call jackal-wolf hybrids? Jack-wolves? Wolfals? Volkals (from Russian: volk = wolf)? Lupals (from Italian: lupo = wolf)?

Why doesn't this channel has 3~5 million subs?
It has more editing, script and camera work than TV nowadays.
It seems biology, to the general public, is like the deep oceans...we know it's there and doesn't quite defy our understanding of earth, but yet we know so little and we could reach our hand to grasp it.... but no, let's dream about black holes and other worlds out there.

I totally agree! most of the time when it involves learning about animals children take more intrest. I really wonder why this changes over time? its too bad we could make much more progress for humans and for animals if the intrest in wildlife was still present in all of adults today.

    Great video Emily and team!,
it had good depth and length, was very well done and with high production quality, it even had some brains on it! just perfect!
I can see how much work has gone into this, just the number of shots from different locations alone is a lot of work, not to mentions all the bits of transition and whatnot. keep it up!

Three years ago I watched your wolf videos and was really surprised by how fascinating I found them. However, every time I attempted dissections in school I got really anxious and wouldn't be able to participate.
I've been in A&P all year and until this week I've been a largely unhelpful lab partner, but yesterday we were dissecting whole rats and seeing all the body systems and how they work together was just *too* cool and it stopped scaring me. My teacher said it was by far my best job.
Anyway, I just really wanted to tell you because you inspired my interest in this sort of thing and I *never* would have held out for the fun part without that.

Not only was hybridization covered, but also what that means for interactions with us humans (legally, physically in the world, etc.). ^genealogist in^ just the other day I have found a couple of burial records for my ancestors (their siblings actually) that had "killed by wolf" as cause of death, apparently it was quite common in the early 17th century in northern italy, and I get why: famine and plague were the norm in those years, horrid times, the wolves had to come down from the mountains and cover more distance trying to find food. Btw, in the last decade, after being driven away from these regions, they have been coming back - thanks to the creations of protected areas and laws - we did not reintroduce them! :) (bears, too!). wohoo! (no more solitary walks in the mountains, I guess!). Great episode, Emily and staff!

I think this is the best episode yet! Loved it.
But the background music for about half the video was seriously distracting :( Could you use something with a bit less change going on? Or mix it lower? It makes it hard for me to focus on the words.

This is a fantastic video. Probably the best I've seen from this already excellent channel. Way to go!
Also, as a student trying to do a study on mammal postcranials, I feel the pain of all those discarded skeletons...

Your day on the No Dumb Questions podcast helped me find you. The wolf is often the center of heated debate here in Alaska.
