    Watching these dream builds made me train up to be a mechanic. So I did all the Cytech courses. Any tips for someone just starting out?

    • @judechandler5102

      Shop mech here. Get as much experience as you can. Push yourself to do new, more challenging services and rebuilds, don't turn opportunities down unless you think you might screw up the part(s), and if you do turn one down, shadow the guy/lady who does it instead. Take notes on tricky procedures, there's no shame in consulting instructions. Be friendly to your fellow mechs and customers. Keep the workshop tidy. Admit your mistakes and fix them immediately at your own cost if necessary, and don't be afraid to make them, we all do! Do your research is one of the biggest tips I can give. The nerdier you are the better mechanic you will be. That means not just sticking to modern stuff. Learn the obscure vintage standards, imperial and metric stuff, you never know when it might come in handy. Never visibly display an adjustable wrench, you don't want to be seen using one, until you absolutely need one, then it will be a lifesaver. Oh, and don't loose all the 10mm wrenches! I wish you a happy career!

      @@judechandler5102 I worked in a bike shop in the mid to late 90's and the 10 mm spanners going missing was a thing back then as well. I thought they wouldn't be needed now with the modern stuff.

    • @judechandler5102
      @judechandler5102 2 года назад

      @@garethhelliwell9736 you won't be seeing any 10mm anything on a decent modern bike, but most low end bikes still use them, and 9 and 8mm bolts, and of course anything vintage. How often you need one depends on the establishment you work at, and what sort of bikes you work on there, but boy oh boy do they still go missing! I really should've said 5mm allen key too, but I was making that age old joke...sigh

      I think they are called rim protectors. This are tubeless wheels, so you can add this rubber that acts as a bumper against rough trails.

    What's the point of using a torque wrench when all bolts on the handlebar clamp are overtightened anyway?

      Sorry I must've missed it where did he over tighten the stem bolts?

    • @mopedvieh
      @mopedvieh 2 года назад +1

      @@jorgscz9175 around 5:30. He uses an allen key to assemble the clamps, then switches to the torque wrench, presumably to get to the correct torque. However, the torque wrench instantly engages on all bolts, i.e. they are all too tight.

      @jorgscz9175 2 года назад +10

      @@mopedvieh ooohhh I see what you're saying. Ok as a bike tech here I have to say that over torquing stem bolts is not that big of a deal. I'm sure he's using the torque wrench to make sure that they're at least 5 nm, and knowing that this guy has built probably hundreds if not thousands of bikes I'm sure he's got a pretty good feel as to how tight stem bolts should be
