Hello again Vicky from Bonnie Scotland. That guitar tone is the result of the band's inspiration coming from Scottish folk music. It's the folk tones of violin and accordion that we all grew up hearing here adapted into the rock music style of BC. People often mistake it for bagpipes which it DEFINITELY is NOT. Here in Scotland bagpipes are purely an instrument of our military, effectively a weapon of war. For centuries Scots armies have marched into battle behind a lone piper. The lead singer Stuart Adamson was the main songwriter in the band and knowing him for as many years as I did I can tell you he is the most anti war human being I have ever met in my life. Glad you liked this track too Vicky we will make a fan of you in no time lol. If you want a giant list of more recommendations then just let me know 😀❤🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿❤😀

Hello! It's wonderful to hear from you again! I love how you explained the Scottish folk influence behind the guitar tone-it really helps to understand the sound of Big Country better. It's clear how much thought and meaning went into the music, especially with Stuart Adamson’s anti-war message. Thank you so much for sharing these insights! I’d absolutely love to hear more recommendations-don’t hesitate to send them my way! Cheers to more great music discoveries! 😊🎸

@vp8reacts There is East of Eden from the 2nd album which has my favourite lines Stuart ever wrote. From the 3rd album there is One Great Thing, aptly named and Eiledon (eye-lee-don) which has backing vocals from legendary singer Kate Bush. Check her song Wuthering Heights if you don't know her yet please. Finally back to the first album there is a ballad, Chance which is the song that will play when I go into the fire because if that's playing and I'm not singing in that box then I'm definitely dead lol it's my final double check 😆

The band is from Scotland and they made their guitars sound like bagpipes...that's the unique guitar sound you hear.

It’s one of the things that sets them apart in the rock world. Thanks for sharing that!

No it isn't bagpipes. I am a friend of the band and know this for a fact. See the main comment I post for the actual explanation. 😀

Cool! The audience was really getting into the song. Looks like it was a great show. The martial flavor of the song suggests that "fields of fire" might refer to a battlefield, but the ambiguous lyrics raise other metaphorical possibilities. The music from 1983 is better known today for its synth-pop, but there were several bands back then making strident music filled with hard pounding drums and ringing guitar licks and earnest vocals. 1983 is the year U2 released their breakthrough album, War, an album filled with songs exemplifying the trend, including "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Two Hearts Beat As One", and "Drowning Man". Other songs in that general style from back then to also check out are The Alarm "The Stand", Modern English "I Melt With You", The Icicle Works "Whisper to a Scream (Birds Fly)", and Elvis Costello "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding". And for another top Scottish band from that era, also check out The Waterboys "The Whole Of The Moon".

What an insightful and passionate take on the music of 1983! It’s incredible how that year blended synth-pop with bands that brought a raw, powerful energy through pounding drums, resonant guitars, and heartfelt lyrics. Your recommendations are fantastic , We’ll definitely be diving deeper into these suggestions. Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful perspective! 🎶
