The homeless problem definitely worsened since covid. There were about 10 camps around the city in 2019, now there are about 100! Shelter capacity dropped, services cut.... But.. the city is making huge investments in fixing the issue. A recent $45 million surplus is all going towards new shelters, a doubling of outreach workers, cleanup etc. And we passed metro wide a tax in 2019 that will build affordable housing and even pay homeless $20/ hr to help clean up the camps. lol I completely hear that. I miss the convenience of NY but don’t miss all that comes with it…. Although Portland at times seems like the craziest place I’ve ever lived
I'm really sad there aren't many poc in Portland as well. It creates so much more diversity and creativity. I hope these videos will help! Seems to be working, a lot of the comments are talking about moving there now. 😊 If you're worried about there being not a lot of POC, start a trend, the more that move there, the more will come. ❤️❤️ I'm thinking of moving there myself, and that's one of the things I look for in a place to live is diversity.
Portland is cheap compared to other big cities but expensive compared to how it used to be - in 2010 I had a 2 bedroom apartment in NE Portland for $600 a month, that same apartment with no upgrades is now $1500. The lack of sales tax was definitely the big money saver there, when I moved back to New Orleans (also affordable compared to big cities but much more expensive than a decade ago) the sales tax hit hard, everything was so much more expensive.
Love the video, I've been thinking of moving to Portland, do you know what areas are good to live in? And how was the long distance travel, I'm from Chicago so it's kinda of the similar distance.
Thanks for tuning in! Northwest Portland and Hillsboro are great areas to live in. And the travel was great for me. It was around a 6 hour flight. I just kicked back, listened to some KiD CuDi and watched a couple movies
Thank you so very much for your experience of Portland, and what you feel is important for poc. I just watched a 20 min video of someone being very negative about people of color and people who struggle with drug addiction and it really made me hesitant on moving to Portland. I’m doing my research for the near future so that my partner and I know if this will be a great fit and where we can be comfortable as queer poc. Thanks so much for being you!!!
Thank you for watching William! I always say, the best way to make that decision is coming out to visit and seeing what it’s like. Portland definitely isn’t for everyone but I think there are some really cool things here. Wish you and your partner the best in your decision
Lived in Oregon from 2014-2022, moved to AZ but hoping to live in OR during the summers only. You got a lot right, hopefully by summer time, you will have went to the coast, hiked and gone to some of the rivers, I would add: Food: There's too many to name but you're off to a great start, I'd throw in Mama Chow's, Eem, Tropicale, Hat Yai, Chicken & Guns. Nightlife: Depending on your age, you may gravitate towards certain neighborhoods. One of my favorite spots in the last three years is called Jackie's, arena style sports bar that turns into a lounge with a dancefloor. Weather: Yeah it rains, it can also get pretty warm in the summer. If you can get passed the 9 months of grey, you'll be fine. Homelessness: Yeah it's a problem, a lot of screaming at night, loitering, if you move from out of state, change your license plates asap, they seem to be a target for break ins. Note on Black Barbers: Before I started cutting my own hair in 2020, I would go to Kingdom Kuts, before that I went to TES. I'd recommend using StyleSeat since a lot of black barbers tend to move around.
Thank you so much for this! I went hiking recently at Angel’s Rest and I can see myself getting into it. Definitely going to try out all of these places you named. Really appreciate you tuning in
Pretty accurate assessment. I do feel that the positives outweigh the negatives by quite a lot though. And, yes, there is SOOOOOO much good food here. For a city this size, it's crazy how much good food there is and much of it can be found at food carts and food cart pods.
I’m in love with the food cart culture here. Back home we just had hot dog and halaal stands but it’s so cool to see these carts playing such a big part in the fabric of Portland
Great Vid I grew up in Portland and you got a lot right. Although I live in the Piedmont neighborhood near Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. (like you said) in Northeast Portland and I've found it's a pretty diverse neighborhood. There's definitely some black barber shops in this area near MLK if you really need a quality barber. I just went to NY for the first time last summer and loved it, I wish it wasn't so expensive to live there!
Thank you for tuning in! You’re absolutely right. There are some black barbershops on MLK but they feel a bit different here. Glad to hear you got to visit NY. It is an amazing city when you’re just visiting
For pizza, there are good places in Portland, but they're pretty expensive sometimes. For good new york/east coast style, try Scotties or Apizza Scholls. For neapolitan, try Lovelys fifty fifty, pyro pizza or oven and shaker. For detroit style, try Ranch pizza. And for a wild card, try Bari Food Truck (fried pizza food truck)
Jordan! Thank you for watching. Congrats on the move. Hoping you enjoy Portland. I used to live in the south a while back and honestly, Portland has a lot of that southern hospitality/charm to it
Awesome! Welcome to Portland. Just be open to meeting new people and you’ll get some great people around you. It’s very easy to meet and make new friends here. Feels like a southern city in that respect. Are you moving here or just visiting?
@@alexenchanter92 I’ve been meeting a lot of ppl coming from Cali. Think there’s a lot of things you’ll enjoy out here but definitely some things will take some getting used to. It’s certainly a different pace from a big city like LA
@@MouseOnFeet I can only imagine King. Real talk, I’m up for it though cuz I need/want to embrace something unfamiliar to me & I feel like my time in CA has come to an end. Lol I wanna stay in a blue state, just not this one lol
Coming from the bay area (sf & oakland). Homeless count does not compare. Keep in mind the homeless is not scary unlike the bay. I been to Portland many times recently and all over. Any major city has homeless.
Blood....I'm from the Bay Area....the homeless situation is worse in Portland....they were even on the side of the freeway up there....we don't have that in the Bay.
I've been thinking about transferring out there for school, and for the most part it sounds like my kind of city. (The homelessness doesn't really phase me unfortunately it's bad everywhere and Ohio specifically has a lot of drug issues with a lack of rehabilitation.) But the lack of specifically black diversity is wild to me, especially since like you said I've heard it's a very progressive town/state. As someone coming from Columbus where we have a nearly 30% African American population I feel like that will be quite a shock. Do you have an idea about why that is/could be?
if move to numbers or st johns u should b good when it comes to diversity! also give holladay park a visit! its a very beautiful park and is a great place to watch the sunset and walk around at night in :)
@Finessnu2 wow, I never knew that, that's horrifying :( are there still parts of Oregon that are considered "sundown?" I'm not a poc but i have a lot of poc friends and would love for them to visit, but if it's going to be dangerous/unwelcoming for them,,,,perhaps Oregon isn't the spot to move to
New York is really expensive so I wanted to find a place that was cheaper and would allow me to put my money to better use than rent. Portland is the cheapest option on the West Coast. Honestly never even looked into Las Vegas because it seems more like a tourist destination than a place that people live
@@MouseOnFeet heck naw portland is expensive as heck.. not as NY.. but it’s expensive. Compared to other city on the west. And Las Vegas is way cheaper. I mean way cheaper. What they’re offering in portland. Or even the Portland metro area to live. You can get a house. Like literally a house. And no not in the hood either…. Lol. I been in Vegas all my life. And stayed in portland for 10 years st8. On and off for 4.. but yea. You should look into vegas
People have been suggesting Kingdom Kuts so I have to check them out. Things are cool here but not sure how long I’ll stay in Portland. Thanks for asking. And I’m hoping to have another video for you guys pretty soon
Yeah, Portland is pretty small and you can get all around just as easy as NY without a car. I will say though, having a car unlocks a whole different experience of the city. So if you don’t have a car, the Portland you come to know is not the same as the Portland that ppl driving know
It depends on what industry you’re looking to get into. In most cases, there are opportunities but I would try to land a job here first. Employers that I’ve spoken to here were eager to get me on board being from out of town and they were more than willing to work with my timeline as I was in the search for an apartment. I have noticed that companies here certainly aren’t paying as much as companies in NY but i suppose that comes with the territory
@@MouseOnFeet thanks for the feedback. I’m looking to do any job that pays the bills tbh I do not aspire to be employed lol I have previous experience in customer service and food service I just don’t think I would be able to get those kinda jobs from all the way over here
I totally hear that. Not a fan of working for others myself. But you’d be surprised with some of these jobs. They’ll give you a video interview and if they like your personality enough, they’ll be willing to work with you. Just make sure once you get the job, that you’re doing what you have to do to build up your own business in the hours you’re not working. Then before you know it, you’ll be able to support yourself off of your talents
@@MouseOnFeet it’s interesting for sure. Coming from Michigan… housing is more expensive and the people are not as nice. But it’s been ok so far. I’m further south outside of Portland.

I’m from NJ- south jersey. I just did a 48hr trip out there for an interview and I couldn’t believe how crappy downtown looked especially all the homeless people. I loved their Zara tho lol it was definitely a sketchy looking place but I rode around MLK area and it was decent. I liked all the artwork, Whole Foods private free parking, and the food trucks lol I definitely wasn’t compelled to move there when I visited but I may just try it out for a year just for the experience, still deciding
lol it is crazy to me how bad downtown is. The crack problem out here is horrible and then there’s a mall with such fancy stores like Gucci smack dab in the middle of it. Most Portland natives say they stay away from Downtown. MLK has some cool spots though.
I am from NYC and want to move to Oregon. The Landscape sold me. I do have a few concerns one being that I am mixed. Half Hispanic and Half Middle Eastern. Not sure how the demographics is.
Alex! Thanks for the sub man. I’ve met a lot of cool creators since moving here. Hasn’t been too hard finding community. Just put yourself out there and it’ll attract the right ppl
I am african american as well. I visited Portland, but did not see any black people. I think that is the big problem brother. Love your video it is clutch
@@beautifulsoul6535 idk what this guy is talking about but this is a super racist place toward anyone who isnt white. You’ll see it if you move here. Also the local portlanders hate transplants. Not a joke my first 6 months here I had Michigan plates and was almost ran off the road on a weekly basis people telling me to go home no one want you hear among other things.
Thanks for the pros and cons. My family is relocating there next year. One thing you mentioned that I also noticed was their mention of “traffic.” I was like what? I’m from Texas so everything takes forever to get to, and there is always traffic in the major cities.
I assume that by now you have found North Portland and the MLK / Alameda area, traditionally the more black area of Portland, for those black barber shops you were looking for. I have been overseas for several years, but I assume that old historic neighborhood line hasn't disappeared entirely. Hehehe...people think I'm crazy when I tell them things in my metropolitan city close around 8:30- 9 PM! Yup, food desert at night, save for a few old mainstay hangs.
There’s a few Black ppl that live in those areas for sure but doesn’t feel like Black neighborhoods. And I’ll never get used to these early closings. These businesses could be making a lot more if they stayed open later
Measure 11 is what the “great people of Portland” voted for ? It basically decriminalized use and possession of all “user quantity” of drugs, so that’s why you see rampant drug use in open areas. Also the “unwritten curfew” is don’t be outside when it’s dark, you will catch a round. Also if you are from NY ( like me ) you have to try Escape From NY pizza on NW21st it’s actually very very good.
Hey Mouse, wife and I moved here from NYC a few months ago. Best pizza discovered so far are Ken’s and Cafe Olli (get the pomodoro with the fresh mozz). But yeah, haven’t hit up a slice place yet. …cuz they’re not on every other block as they should be. Did you have a social circle out here before you moved? And if not, how’re you making friends? We’re trying to meet people, but hasn’t happened too quickly. …be my friend? 😆
Definitely need some slice spots to be more frequently placed out here. Maybe even dollar slices 😇 But no, I didn’t know anyone here before moving. Just kinda dove in. And yeah! Totally, I already consider you a friend of you took the time to tune in
Yes! Glad someone caught that reference lol This is where it’s at for sneakers. You got Nike and Adidas employee stores out here so you can get kicks for 50 percent off. There’s a lot of collectors here And pickup games are slim pickings unless you know a connect at a gym because the outdoor courts are usually empty due to rain. But there are some hoopers here
I was able to find 1 black barber shop called Kindom Cuts. And yeah, everything closes pretty early. Toward the end of the night, you’re mostly relying on bars and food trucks for food
Super helpful video! Those food spots look rad. Are the homeless mostly just centered around Old Town/downtown? Or are they also prevalent in the residential areas on the Eastside (like NE, SE west of the 205)?
Thanks for the info. Did you find it difficult to find housing when apartment hunting? We're moving there this summer and I've seen a few sources say that the housing is really difficult to get into.
I had a bit of difficulty getting into my current apartment but other places seem very eager to get their units filled so it shouldn’t always be such a challenge
Not at all. It’s always good to experience new things. I’ve grown a lot since coming here and I’ve been able to connect with some cool ppl here in Portland as well as ppl online looking to come here. So it’s been a blessing
Thank you for the video, super helpful info! My spouse and I are moving to Portland in May and looking at living on Division in the Richmond neighborhood... is this a cool area? We are moving from out of state. Thank you for your help!!
Yeah, I’ve come across some halal food trucks but honestly haven’t tried any. Currently, I don’t have a car but i fee like it’s becoming a necessity. There are many street parking options (especially compared to NY)
I live in Texas and it’s great state, I just don’t like hot weather so I was thinking of moving to Portland Oregon, can you post a video about jobs in Portland Oregon? Thanks
I love Texas. Spent a day there in 2021 and could definitely see myself going there in the future. But yeah, I can definitely do a deep dive on jobs in Portland, wages and all that and include it in the next update
lol there’s one called Kingdom Cuts. They’re Black and can cut for sure but still didn’t feel like the barbershops I’m used to. Closest thing out here though
Way to go man! I moved here 8 years ago from NYC. I love being here but yes, the pizza game here is pathetic. Apizza Scholls on Hawthorne is proper though
Hello bro I saw your video on RUclips and I will love to move to Oregon coming next year to open a carpet and infectious disease program there I don’t know if we can’t talk about this I do really want to know how the life and the relationship with the growth of such business can work out there, I also will like to know if the house expensiveness is everywhere or just on particular areas or cities, My name is Revpa from Dallas Texas
There’s Black barbers but I’m talking about Black Barbershops with a culture. A place for Black people to chop it up. If you do find a Black barbershop here, it’s a minstrel show inside or they still have white barbers cutting in the next seat (no offense to them) but that’s no longer a Black shop
I appreciate hearing about Portland from a POC. I'll likely be moving there next week on kind of a whim, but I got a job and a place to stay! The curfew thing is scaring me because I'm coming from New Orleans where a bunch of stuff is 24/7, but summers here are usually dead and hot as all hell, so I'm looking forward to a change of scenery!
You had me feeling Portland for a minute but the homeless doing the smash-and-grab thing to people's cars just turned me off from even wanting to visit Portland, let alone actually relocating there. It's a dag on shame! smh
I've been here for 6 months. First 3 months my wife and I lived in the Sellwood Moreland area and now we live on the Vancouver Washington side. Outside of Portland city proper area there is limited diversity. Awkward stirs at blacks especially in the rural areas and driving the coastal areas to see the ocean sites. Homeless is a issue but not as bad as the subtle racism. Outside of the main Portland city, this is a red state.
@@hamzasinanaj9132 true but the beauty of the Pacific northwest is in the rural areas, so to really enjoy the natural beauty of the mountains and coastal you have to visit. Which in turn makes the experience uneasy. You cant spend all your time in Portland. We just lived 3 months in Eugene and now we are staying is Astoria and its more if the same. Traveling healthcare professionals so we are doing the whole state so I am speaking from a personal prospective.

Im 54, and Ive done a lot of traveling, both in the military's dime as well as my own. So, trust me when I tell you, Ive been to cities that claim to be progressive but didnt or dont, do a good job of encouraging people of color to move to that city. Believe it or not, doing that. and being positive about a desire for more of a presence of color, is helpful...IF YOU'RE REACHING OUT TO THE RIGHT FOLKS. Hving visited Portland a few times, as recent as 2013/'14, I left feeling that Portland is going to rebound as a more diverse city, once they figure out how to help the homeless population and get them situated in rehabs and/or long term housing. It sounds impossible. And as a former resident of San Diego, where homelessness is absolutely INSANE, I did see moticeable improvement with the homeless situation, in a pretty short period of time...they still have work to do, however. So, yea...Im thinking about giving Portland a shot...living there, I mean. But another visit is definitely in the cards before I do. Im very intrigued with how affordable the housing is there. Im in DC, my hometown...and rent in Portland, looks like pocket change, in comparison to the 1100.00, Im paying for a fuckin' studio. I also have a car...but Im beginning to think that having one in Portland?...would be a definite no-go.

Thank you for the update! I was in Portland 2 weeks ago and loved it but was sad there weren’t many POC there. I am thinking of moving there but I am also from NY so I love the convenience of having everything at anytime but the city is so crazy now and I’m over it lol
lol I completely hear that.
Yeah, the housing cost increase in this country is criminal. Crazy to think how cheap these apartments used to be
Moving to Portland in July from Utah....its got to be better than here!!
Is Utah bad?

Love the video, I've been thinking of moving to Portland, do you know what areas are good to live in? And how was the long distance travel, I'm from Chicago so it's kinda of the similar distance.
Thanks for tuning in! Northwest Portland and Hillsboro are great areas to live in. And the travel was great for me. It was around a 6 hour flight. I just kicked back, listened to some KiD CuDi and watched a couple movies
Let's go
I 2nd Hillsboro, specifically Tanasbourne area

I’m really, really glad someone else mentioned the unofficial curfew.
lol it so weird. The places could be making a lot more money at night
Lived in Oregon from 2014-2022, moved to AZ but hoping to live in OR during the summers only. You got a lot right, hopefully by summer time, you will have went to the coast, hiked and gone to some of the rivers, I would add:
Food: There's too many to name but you're off to a great start, I'd throw in Mama Chow's, Eem, Tropicale, Hat Yai, Chicken & Guns.
Thanks for the update. I watched both your videos. I just came out to Portland on a work travel assignment.
Hey Justin! Thanks for tuning in. Hope you’ve been enjoying Portland so far
@@MouseOnFeet Today is about to be my first day getting out in the city and I really don't know where to start. But I got all day
For pizza, there are good places in Portland, but they're pretty expensive sometimes.
Thanks for watching! I did a video on the best pizza in Portland. Some okay places here but it’s just different after you’ve lived in NY

5 years! Congrats man. And shoutout to Detroit
Coming from the bay area (sf & oakland). Homeless count does not compare. Keep in mind the homeless is not scary unlike the bay. I been to Portland many times recently and all over. Any major city has homeless.
Yeah, I guess that’s the reality we have to deal with in any major city 😔
I’m not sure what’s caused black ppl to stay away from Portland other than visiting and seeing the lack of their own. It is surprising though
@@MouseOnFeet Yeah that makes sense 😩 Hopefully the diversity grows and becomes a lot more varied over time.
Oregon was a whites-only state until 1922. The state Constitution banned Black people. Y'all embarrassing. Google it.

@Finessnu2 wow, I never knew that, that's horrifying :( are there still parts of Oregon that are considered "sundown?" I'm not a poc but i have a lot of poc friends and would love for them to visit, but if it's going to be dangerous/unwelcoming for them,,,,perhaps Oregon isn't the spot to move to
Hispanic barbers have been getting me right since I’ve moved to Portland. Shoutout Manuelito & Francisco.
“That’s like a 25 minute walk” - said by Mouse with a straight face

Portland is a walkable city. So walking 25 min. You don’t even think about it
Love seeing influencers here in Portland Im from here!!!
😊 Yeah! I’m having a blast out here. Got some more Portland content coming this weeekend
I have a serious question. What made you decide to move to portland? By you being from the big apple. I don’t understand why you didn’t move to Vegas
What part of vegas ? And is it diversed
Did you use a moving company to move your stuff?
No, I just packed up a few suitcases and then shipped the other stuff in boxes to my new address
Did you ever find a barber? How are things going for you currently? When will you drop another video?
People have been suggesting Kingdom Kuts so I have to check them out. Things are cool here but not sure how long I’ll stay in Portland. Thanks for asking. And I’m hoping to have another video for you guys pretty soon
Can I live there without a car coming from nyc? Which part of Portland is close to the trains and buses
Yeah, Portland is pretty small and you can get all around just as easy as NY without a car. I will say though, having a car unlocks a whole different experience of the city. So if you don’t have a car, the Portland you come to know is not the same as the Portland that ppl driving know
@@MouseOnFeet gotchu. Would you say it’s calmer than nyc you don’t have to be street smart every minute as much as nyc? Know what I mean?

Great video thanks for the update I’m tryna move from Arizona ASAP just wanted to know what the job opportunities are like?
Stay in Arizona. Portland is a shit-hole. Right up there with the other 3 west coast cities (LA, San Francisco, and Seattle)

Thanks for the pros and cons. My family is relocating there next year. One thing you mentioned that I also noticed was their mention of “traffic.” I was like what? I’m from Texas so everything takes forever to get to, and there is always traffic in the major cities.
Hey Rocky! Thanks for watching. Wishing your fam all the best on their move. I think they’ll enjoy Portland’s version of traffic
Thanks for tuning in! Escape from NY is cool and yeah, all that has made Portland a different type of weird than I was expecting
Hey Mouse, wife and I moved here from NYC a few months ago. Best pizza discovered so far are Ken’s and Cafe Olli (get the pomodoro with the fresh mozz). Wait…closes at 7:00 pm???
I was able to find 1 black barber shop called Kindom Cuts. And yeah, everything closes pretty early. Toward the end of the night, you’re mostly relying on bars and food trucks for food

I've lived in The Valley and for me Portland is
Super helpful video! Those food spots look rad. Are the homeless mostly just centered around Old Town/downtown? Or are they also prevalent in the residential areas on the Eastside (like NE, SE west of the 205)?

I've been here for 6 months. First 3 months my wife and I lived in the Sellwood Moreland area and now we live on the Vancouver Washington side. Outside of Portland city proper area there is limited diversity. Awkward stirs at blacks especially in the rural areas and driving the coastal areas to see the ocean sites. Homeless is a issue but not as bad as the subtle racism. Outside of the main Portland city, this is a red state.
That’s interesting to hear. I’ve been wondering what Vancouver is like

Damn that con about your car getting broken into isn't very inspiring. He kinda made it sound like I would have to deal with that yearly if I live in an apartment and don't have a garage. Somehow I find that doubtful, but I guess I will find out.
It happens pretty frequently out here but I’m sure you can find ways to prevent it
