Look for the lightest bits of the area that you are drawing. The colour you see there will help you with your choice for a base layer. When working on hot press paper (as I did here), we work from light to dark so the base layer is usually going to be a light colour. Go with the closest colour that you can see in the light areas. :)

I create the line art to go with all of my tutorials on Patreon or in my Art Membership. 😊
