No. It is Sony's attempt of an Americanized Batman Ninja movie minus the gigantic mechs and other things while being too similar. Nonetheless, I liked it a lot. Emoji movie is nowhere as shitty as Ralph Wrecked His Nuts movie from last year.
I love the main three characters for different reasons. Gwen's combat and overall presentation was great, her back story was short but impactful, and I want to see more of her. Peter B. Parker made me cry for the first time in years and he embodied the fears I have as a young adult starting my life: "How do I know I won't mess it up again." And Miles was also incredibly relatable, feeling like there was so much expected of him, what if what made him happy meant he didn't live up to the "Great expectations." This movie is the toy story of it's time. No movie comes close to what this movie did and it's going to influence Animation and media for decades to come
I absolutely love the animation of spider verse for just more than the reasons you mentioned, like: - the differing art styles between the different spider... people? Peni and porker have cel shading, noir consistently has dotted screentones for his shading and usually relies on highlights rather than shadows to define his shape (adding to the overall moodiness of his character design), etc. - the chromatic aberration, especially when playing with camera focus and how it differs in color for the characters (ex. As someone that dreams to become an animator, you have no idea how much I fell in LOVE with this movie, I screamed "IT SO PRETTY" At the top of my lungs one hundred times, THIS is what I want to create as a future animator and I want to live up to this animators, story board artist and everyone involved in this movie.
Just a friendly reminder that Peni, in fact, has heelys (the shoes with the wheels on the bottom). Look no further than the scene in Aunt May's house where she hands the finished "Goober" to Gwen. Peni is the BEST
i remember one of the animator(?) said on twitter the reason she got heelys is because there wasnt enough time for her to walk from the back to the front so they just added heelys for her to slide accross the kitchen... which i think it is much more perfect LMAO
Spider-Gwen, she's the best. To paraphrase CinemaWins; the imperfections of the art style make the movie feel real, it's the perfect balance of cartoony and realistic.
That ending quote really finished it off so nicely. "Stop living in the past, Make the most of the present. Make friends with your room-mate, Try hard in school, even when it sucks, Hang out with your dad, and most importantly, Accept the gifts and unique talents you've been given, and take responsibility to use them to help other people." Beautiful.
The movie improved Miles as a character and inproved his origin story. Along with giving him a different personality. In the comics he was just black Peter Parker. Im glad they improved his character along with his uncle, his uncle was straight up hateful and you feel nothing when he dies in the comics.
Someone, I can't remember who, did a video explaining why spiderverse Miles is so different from comic Miles, and it's basically because Tom Holland's Peter Parker was designed using basically all of Miles surface level character traits , so rather than be accused of riffing off of Holland's performance and the MCU's interpretation (despite the fact that that Peter Parker was riffing off of comic Miles (Nothing wrong with that, you mind)), the Spiderverse team dipped down and reworked miles's character from scratch. If only I could remember which spiderverse video it was.
I feel it's important to note that the voice actors were given scripts, but were also encouraged to improvise and add their own little touches and flairs. Really makes the characters feel like actually people talking
Great video, but just a small note: every movie production style animation will have their animators act out their scenes and use it as reference for the scenes they work on, it's not exclusive to Spider-Verse. We did it a lot in school for projects when we were doing action shots or lip-syncs, or even simpler scenes.
A few people have mentioned this! Interesting. I always knew it was standard practice for hand-drawn animation especially decades ago, but assumed it had gone out of style with 3D-animation. Checked out your channel, by the way; really good stuff!
@@houston-coley Thanks man! Yep it's still common, I worked in TV animation and we don't really do it there most of the time because of time constraints and the animation looks bad anyway, but movies have more time to finesse stuff.
The way you described animated naturalism reminded me a lot of old school anime, from your Miyazaki's or Takahata's. They would spent an enormous amount of time having their animated characters do little gestures of humanity to make them feel real.
Yessss. In general animation from eastern countries is far more naturalistic because their sensibilities are far less concerned with plot and more with the beauty found in mundanity and quiet moments. I love it.
ah, someone else who can appreciate good work. although they weren't alone in that regard. most older (and some newer) anime are excellent at it. the writing tends to swing across the spectrum, but you can count on the animation team to make things seem a bit more real (although few would go as far as the likes of those two).
@@BitchChill I honestly don't know. Look at anime or adult cartoons for a second. Some anime can be directed at kids, but most of them aren't. And adult cartoons are just that. Cartoons for adults.
DragonGold For this to animation to have one an Oscar, it’s certainly more than meant for just older kids and teens. Even the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man references and jokes prove that. Those movies came out in the early 2000’s. Any person that would get those jokes and references wouldn’t be teens and older kids, it’d be adults and late late teens
I've been saying it for years, animated films are NOT just for kids. And there's so much they can do that live-action movies just can't. Thank you for broadly proving my point!!
10:19 We were watching Megamind as a family a few days ago, and while I enjoy that film I actually pointed out at the end, "the city in this film feels to lifeless. Crowd scenes seem to end 30 feet away from the action, and it doesn't feel like a real place." Your explanation on making a background world feel lived in summed up what I was trying to say.
What Megamind lacks in visual background makes up for the script, jokes, and masterful story-telling tho. Just reading the word Megamind makes me want to rewatch.... again.
@@masonlong6514 not really, that lived-in feeling isn’t only present in anime, but it’s something that a lot of animated kids movies frequently wrong. What’s important is that spider-verse defies the genre in a great way. It’s a kids movie that’s watchable for everyone because it’s so good
Noir is just a fun fish out of water character he's amused by everything around him. I am also just biased towards the 30s hard boiled style. Just found you channel and I have never clicked the sub button so fast.
_"Animated Naturalism"_ That should totally be an official term. Favorite Spider-Man in the movie? Gonna have to go with Peter B. because of his character/story and Peni because she's cute
Excuse the language but holy shit. I’ve always loved these movie analyses but this is by far the best one I’ve seen, it has broken down every single reason that I love this movie even the ones I couldn’t explain myself. And that final quote man, just *chef’s kiss*. You have absolutely earned this sub.
I particularly enjoyed the portrayal of Peni Parker. The re-designing of the character was well-done, on top of the integration of the anime style into the 3D world. She was given a personality and a depth that makes me want to see more of her and the other minor characters.
@@Peppermon22 Dude, compared to what Noir and Ham did, Peni was far more crucial to the plot than they were, as Noir and Ham barely contributed anything. And this is coming from someone who still really enjoys those characters and want to see more of them. Honestly, Peni being able to majorly contribute was highly generous, all things considered. And all the better for me since she's by far my favourite.
Legit I can relate to spider Gwen’s struggles on a spiritual level. Distancing yourself from people so you won’t get hurt again is a habit that has ruined me mentally. Great to see someone like that since you never see those type of characters, especially in a kids movie.
I just realized, when Miles gets spider sense together with Spiderman, his background is pink and green, while Spidermans background is blue and red. As Miles understands that they are both getting the same sensation, his background also turns red and blue! I have no idea if that was intended or not, but it sure is clever
@@ahmed4363 In the comics, miles follows his uncle and becomes another prowler but that scene symbolizes when he met Peter his pathway changed to becoming spiderman
i cant imagine picking a favorite character other than Miles. He is the heart and soul of the movie and everything about him is so real. His moment of triumph in the leap of faith gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.
Wow, its June 2019 and we still are getting spiderverse videos? Theres still hope in humanity. Edit: Wow, thanks so much for 500 likes! Edit 2: And now more then 1k likes? This is insane.
I haven't watched it yet but it looks incredible and I love animation/art so I want to see it so badly. Thank God it's going to be on Netflix in June 24th
Wow. I really love this analysis. And great job for pointing out Older Peter's struggle - he was depressed, stuck and basically willing to die/sacrifice himself, but he chose to continue living and face his demons. That is a very vERY mature lesson to be portrayed in any movie, especially an animated one. And I didn't even really grasp the impact of it until you pointed it out. Kudos!
Not only was this an amazingly well done movie, but the character development was insanely incredible as well. Even the characters that we didn’t get to really meet, like an old friend of miles, or even Aaron (who we didn’t really get to know), it’s almost like we met the character, it’s like we knew them like miles did. And the characters that we did get to meet, we knew them, they were our friends. The way all of the characters are portrayed is just amazing. They all act their age as well, which is a very important factor. And on top of that, the storyline is literal gold. I really love this movie.
best Spider-Verse video, thanks for all the effort you put in. Fav Spider-Verse scene is still the first scene of Miles singing, and tapping his throat when he goes off key, acting cool. It's so human, and kicks off that feeling of being in film with real and relate-able story moments.
Well... yes and no. The thing with anime is, it doesnt offer much, except color, music and bad movements. They dont really have creativity or good animation or anything, you can literally see the manga panels while watching an episode /when a character talks, the only thing that's moving is his lips, etc/. Of course, there are exceptions, beautifully animated movies and shows - like Studio ghibli, Makoto Shinkai, etc.
@@spntageous5249 watch mob psycho 100 and get back to me on that lol. but yeah i do agree most anime these days is very sterile, reused, and bland. occasionally there will be gems like mp100 or uhh keep your hands off eizouken is another one i can think of, but what with the 800 different isekais we get every year its starting to get ridiculous
Honestly, I cried when I saw the movie. Miles is my favorite character because I see so many of my own struggles in him. Strained relationships, feeling in your element one minute and then feeling out of place the next, everything being too much and too fast, your own thoughts at a such a high volume you're not sure what you've said out loud or not. This young man, who is spider-man, is also just that - a young man. And to see a movie that was so visually beautiful but so extremely human... I can't describe it without my own video! I used to have a solid top three movie list for a decade, and this kicked one of them off. It's special and no one should miss out on it.
I'm rather photosensitive, and this movie gave me a horrible headache and almost a seizure with its bright colours and flashing lights. I'm going to watch it again soon because it's so worth it.
I have to say, that I do have trouble choosing a spider. Nick Cage surprised me, Ham cracked me up, and I like just enough anime to like Penny. Every one was memorable. Awesome review!!
Animators filming themselves as reference material is the 101 of animation. References and real life are everything 😊 And for myself, I would love to see more of Spider Gwen ❤️
The saddest thing is the fact that when this movie came out, I invited my dad to come see it with me and he dismissed it because it was an animated film. Its really a shame he missed out on one of the greatest animated films I’ve ever seen and one of the best films of 2018 AND one of my favorite superhero films of all time.
Great video! As a huge fan of John Mulaney’s comedy sketches, it was amazing seeing him cast so perfectly as spider ham. Same goes for the entire cast.
Great video, you made me appreciate this movie even more than I thought was possible! One note though, using reference footage is actually commonplace for animators since classic Disney, what makes Spiderverse characters feel more natural compared to other movies is more a choice of writing and direction. And my favorite is Spider Ham!
This movie helped remind me why I'm in college, why I pull all nighters, and why I love it when my art projects are done. Seeing the all the work and effort come to fruition.... it's a crazy thing man.
I've seen a lot f the concept art for the different rooms and settings for the movie and you can feel the love and care that went into making them feel lived in. The opening scene really gets me because you can see all the things Miles is passionate about, but you can also so that his family supports him in pursuing those passions (i.e. the easel and high-quality markers) and that they love him so much - idk I tear up just thinking about it x')
Years later and I’m still watching new takes and perspectives on this movie. Ironically that also reflects the different takes on Spiderman that ITSV builds on
I remember I first saw the trailer in an ad before a video. And just the first sequence of frames had me engulfed in the world and was just gushing at the art. I had never even heard anyone talk about it before, so this was pretty unique to see for me. And I don't know what it is, but when I'm about to watch a movie I'll love, I get this feeling from the trailer. You ever get that? Like, you get a feeling that this is going to be a great movie, and it fills you with excitement, and sometimes you don't know what about it excites you? Heck! I had no interest in Spiderman before. I've never watched a live action Marvel movie or read any comics before, so why I wanted to watch this movie so much confused me. So sadly I didn't get to see it in theatres soon enough, but boy! Am I glad I have it on DVD!
Man talk about a video analysis, i watched spider verse many times, and never i actually sat down and looked at the masterpiece that is this movies frames. My brain always tells me that this is the most vibe heavy movie from the locations, lighting, and animation but i will have never noticed these had i not seen this video. Beautiful job here!
AMAZING analysis of an AMAZING movie..... Great job yet again, Houston! 👏🏼 Your content gets better and better! Peter B. Parker is the most interesting character in this movie for me. The worn, world-weary depiction felt fresh and surprising as an iteration we had yet to see of this particular character. That it took a 13-year old kid to help him rediscover his purpose and direction was a nice dissection of how the road of life curiously converges us with the right people along our journey even if they often come packaged in unexpected ways. 😇 Can you imagine the pressure on this team for the sequel though?!?!? 😬😓
In my opinion animation is far better than Live Action in many aspects (not all though) story is better (Fullmetal Alchemist) the fights are more dynamic (Spiderverse and Clone Wars animated) visuals are more breathtaking (Any Makato Shinkai film) the world's feel more alive (again Spiderverse and Ghibli) There's a reason out of my top 5 films are animated.
It was such a refreshingly new and unique message from a movie. The art style also stood out being so bold and cinematic while still paying attention to the details to keep it grounded in realism. My favorite Spider-Verse Spider Person would have to be Spider Ham aka Peter Porker. His cartoonishly goofy mannerisms, zany fighting style, and sarcastic humor was very entertaining. He was also an interesting contrast to the personalities of the other Spider People.
The creator of one punch man and the creator of Tokyo Ghoul also did illustrations of the into the spider verse characters so also it even has his own anime opening in Japan.
7:56 Okay, hold up: I love this movie just as much as anyone, but it gets zero bonus points for just using reference footage. Literally every modern animated movie does this. It's awesome, but nothing special. What I see in spiderverse is animators who had the time and the impetus to put a *lot* of effort into capturing as much nuance and subtlety from said reference footage as possible. Small distinction, but I think it's important
I don't know this for sure but I feel like Edgar Wright was a huge inspiration too. Not only the "From Dusk Till Shaun" Poster but also there are many many shots that feel straight out of a Wright film. The camera following the door closing from the nurses office, the match cut between the picture of The guard to the actual guard martching down the hallway.
i’d like to input something i loved that this video kinda brought out- the voice acting. To me, this movie made every character feel so real using the voice actors. Every character felt like they were talking to each other rather than a script. The voice acting was so smooth and non robotic/cliche-it put you right in the movie with every character. I don’t know how they managed to do such a great job with that. I love this movie with a burning passion and have cried solely over how amazing and beautiful it is💕💕💕💕
I watched it a few days ago and I loved it so much! I especially liked the colors of Gwen's costume (the black white cyan and magenta color scheme is just perfect and it's my favorite color combination)
I'm glad someone made a video like this because I never knew the difference between a good animation and "Humanised Animation". The animation, the colors, the lighting, the feel all is different but has the same formula and that's what makes a good animated movie. Mine is Peni Parker.....cus....anime
This video perfectly and beautifully discusses how an animated movie can stand out and relate with the audience even from a design, directing or an animation standpoint. Everytime I watch these kind of videos, I always find and learn something new about how Spiderverse and even other movies achieve their ability to attract audiences and give their movies such life. This was such an amazing video!
Spider-Man into the spider verse is like turning in a perfect essay and getting an 110% on it because u included those little details that add on to the paper, making it even more perfect
I just saw the movie last night. Blew me away. I love how unique it is. I am happy you were able to capture the research of the "realism" of the animation. I actually reminds me of the creators and showrunners of Avatar the Last Airbender studied motion for their show, from the animators actually taking classes in martial arts, to the showrunners chasing one another with furniture in the way while they imitating bending. Makes the characters believable and relatable because they act like us, minus bending and web-slinging, of course. And I loved the photography / cinematography of what Alfonso Cuaron did with Poisoner of Azkaban [I wanted him to Direct the rest of the Harry Potter movies], in just three seconds, he could set a mood and make you think deeply about the characters in their setting without there being any intelligible dialogue at all.
Gwen is fanTAStic but Miles is the star and I love him and I cry so often listening to the soundtrack and watching vids like this about his coming-of-age arc. Thanks for the video, Houston
When I saw the trailer for this movie, my jaw hit the ground.... But, in the back of my mind, I was expecting a half hearted attempt at another form of Spider-Man. But, when this movie had me in awe of its absolute beauty, and the jokes, and the shed tears, and then watching it in 3D and having my mind blown yet again...... THIS is, my favorite Spider-Man movie. I would change, NOTHING. I am so, SO very glad we got this amazing movie, and I want more. And, I know that I am not the only person that wants more.
Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse is probably one of the greatest movies of all time, it has amazing animation, a powerful message, great writing, and some of the best cinematography i've seen in an animated movie
I _really_ want to see some more stuff featuring The B-Team of Peni, Noire, and Ham. Even if it isn't a full length film and is just a small short, I want to see more of the trio.

Great video, but just a small note: every movie production style animation will have their animators act out their scenes and use it as reference for the scenes they work on, it's not exclusive to Spider-Verse. We did it a lot in school for projects when we were doing action shots or lip-syncs, or even simpler scenes.
Epic
A few people have mentioned this! Interesting. I always knew it was standard practice for hand-drawn animation especially decades ago, but assumed it had gone out of style with 3D-animation. Checked out your channel, by the way; really good stuff!
@@houston-coley Thanks man! Yep it's still common, I worked in TV animation and we don't really do it there most of the time because of time constraints and the animation looks bad anyway, but movies have more time to finesse stuff.
I was going to come down here to say that! Yep!

I imagine the point was people liked Despicable Me, and the lazy safe option was Minions.

Minions is the best example of this. Put in as little effort as possible and make >$1B dollars.
I love it.
It reminds me a lot of Shinkai's work! Your Name, Garden of Words, Children Who Chase Lost Voices, 5 Centimeters per Second... Simply beautiful movies
ah, someone else who can appreciate good work. although they weren't alone in that regard. most older (and some newer) anime are excellent at it. the writing tends to swing across the spectrum, but you can count on the animation team to make things seem a bit more real (although few would go as far as the likes of those two).
"The faces looked hand-drawn." That's because they were! The 3-D models weren't made with faces just for this purpose!
Stop saying kids movie. Animation isn’t just a “kids movie”, it’s more
Why is animation always associated with that?
@@BitchChill I honestly don't know. Look at anime or adult cartoons for a second. Some anime can be directed at kids, but most of them aren't. And adult cartoons are just that. Cartoons for adults.
i share your opinion yet i feel like he meant specifically this animation which is directed at teenagers and older kids..
Nestor Roldan sausage party
Just reading the word Megamind makes me want to rewatch.... again.
His explanation was bacicly just make animated movies with the same feeling as anime

Favorite Spider-Man in the movie? Gonna have to go with Peter B. because of his character/story and Peni because she's cute
FBI OPEN UP
My favorite is Porker
My favorite is Anti-Nazi Spidey.
Yes
I like Peni because she's fun and animeee.
Kasey Combs meh I feel like she and the black and white peter had the least to give. All she did was program the goober.
@@Peppermon22 I mean, she fixed it all up, which was kind of crucial, since that was the reason Miles and Peter B. went to steal that computer.
You do see them, but they're almost never done in a way that is this respectful to the reality of that struggle
I just realized, when Miles gets spider sense together with Spiderman, his background is pink and green, while Spidermans background is blue and red. As Miles understands that they are both getting the same sensation, his background also turns red and blue! I have no idea if that was intended or not, but it sure is clever
It is intended

Spider Noir is a personal favorite of mine. Great analysis man! Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Fav Spider-Verse scene is still the first scene of Miles singing, and tapping his throat when he goes off key, acting cool. It's so human, and kicks off that feeling of being in film with real and relate-able story moments.
Depresso Peter is my favorite but Miles is a close second...

more of a brave move for him to keep on living than it is for him to sacrifice himself"

Anime and manga: Do I mean nothing to you?
For most of the people yes
For those who acknowledge it... Maybe no (depends on the adaptation)
It's called hentai and its art..... wait I mean filthy weeb
Well...

Seen Akira, Ninja Scroll, Fist of the North star, Vampire Hunter D BLoodlust, Ghibli, Wolf Children etc. any thoughts?
Honestly, I cried when I saw the movie. Miles is my favorite character because I see so many of my own struggles in him. Strained relationships, feeling in your element one minute and then feeling out of place the next, everything being too much and too fast, your own thoughts at a such a high volume you're not sure what you've said out loud or not. This young man, who is spider-man, is also just that - a young man. And to see a movie that was so visually beautiful but so extremely human... I can't describe it without my own video! I used to have a solid top three movie list for a decade, and this kicked one of them off. It's special and no one should miss out on it.

Animators filming themselves as reference material is the 101 of animation.
References and real life are everything 😊
And for myself, I would love to see more of Spider Gwen ❤️
The saddest thing is the fact that when this movie came out, I invited my dad to come see it with me and he dismissed it because it was an animated film. Its really a shame he missed out on one of the greatest animated films I’ve ever seen and one of the best films of 2018 AND one of my favorite superhero films of all time.
8:44 knowing what we know now about ATSV and miguel, that comment was absolutey crazy and accturate about across the spiderverse.

Fantastic video, man. I loved every minute of it and you should be proud of what you’ve created. Great job!
Miles is easily my favorite- he has such a positive impact on the characters around him, and he reminds me of some of my former students!
Can you imagine the pressure on this team for the sequel though?!?!? 😬😓
11:36 i actually thought that was Asgard until I saw the train 😂
This was spectacular. I can't commend you enough as an insightful, measured voice within the online film community. Keep at it!

Wait till you see the Sequel!💖🤍
In my opinion animation is far better than Live Action in many aspects (not all though) story is better (Fullmetal Alchemist) the fights are more dynamic (Spiderverse and Clone Wars animated) visuals are more breathtaking (Any Makato Shinkai film) the world's feel more alive (again Spiderverse and Ghibli) There's a reason out of my top 5 films are animated.
It's actually quite ironic that animation feels more alive than the live action movies most of the time.
@@tobito2013 It's because there are limits to what you can do with actors vs animation.
Houston really knocked it out of the park with this one. He's reached a new personal best here. Keep it up man.
8:00 that is so cool, and doing that kiss and hug with the animators mom is just touching, it shows that they put heart on this movie

The creator of one punch man and the creator of Tokyo Ghoul also did illustrations of the into the spider verse characters so also it even has his own anime opening in Japan.
Can I just compliment your whole radio motif? You use these all these fuzzy film effect and these scratchy radio voices, it’s hella good.
Fair point, I guess.
true.
Yeeeees!
I watched every ad all the way through. Because you 100% deserve it Houston. 11/10 video.
Also my favourite Spider Person is Spiderman Noir. Easy.
i’d like to input something i loved that this video kinda brought out- the voice acting.

Also my personal favorite spider person has gotta be Gwen. Ballerina AND percussionist? No competition. She’s the best
I'm glad someone made a video like this because I never knew the difference between a good animation and "Humanised Animation". The animation, the colors, the lighting, the feel all is different but has the same formula and that's what makes a good animated movie.

Took me a while to get around to this. But I desperately hope it blows up. So good
I just saw the movie last night.
