Hi Josh, former airport manager and pilot. Bend Airport (KBND) is a public non-tower controlled airport. It is in FAA class E airspace. The Radio frequency for pilots to talk to one another is 123.00. unless specified by local airport policy use of the radio is not required by law. Like non-powered boats on water, balloons and glider aircraft have right if way. Pilots at non-controlled airports tell each other where they are and what they are going to do. They do not need permission to land at a public use airport. Balloon Pilots know the airspace rules and im quite sure your pilot guy was on CTAF frequency and talking to the other airplanes. Entry onto the airport is allowed for authorized persons and pilots and passengers can be on the airport to recover the balloon etc. Im gad you all had a fun time. Nice video and well edited etc. BTW in re-watching the video at the airport your balloon pilot did a super job choosing his landing spot and staying off the taxi ways, the infield grass and/or the runway. Ive seen quite a few mess ups. This landing was picture perfect.
Good evening Josh. Great view of the balloon being inflated and then the drone actions was fantastic. Following along in the truck I can imagine could be difficult as the balloon can go many places where vehicles can't too well. I follow a person that does hitchhiking and tour biking and when he was in NM 2 yrs ago we went by the Big Balloon Parade from Albuquerque and met up with a person that took him to the site of takeoff at night. That was interesting. Then last year with a storm chaser in the day time and seen 100's of balloons take off and all the shapes, colours, designs, was amazing just how exact they have to be on take off. I would never be able to go up in one as very terrified of heights but can just imagine how majestic riding the winds, silence, and the scenery from up there would be. St Jean sur Richelieu, Quebec, Canada 🇨🇦 just had their 40 annual International Hot Air Balloon and music Festival. It lasts two weeks and also have night shows. Good to check it out. Your Vlog was fun to watch how it all comes together.

Balloons In the sky are so beautiful to watch!!!! I have never ridden in one, but have seen many fly over. I used to live in Indianola, Iowa which held the National Balloon Classic ever year the first week in August. I worked as a veterinary technician at a local vet clinic and walked dogs in early morning and could see many balloons transversing the sky!!! It was amazing to see so many different colored balloons flying by!!! I would imagine chasing that balloon was a thrilling experience for you!!! Thanks for the video, Josh!!!

Most airports (90%) don’t have a tower and are “controlled” by pilots entering leaving the field by radio. They are classified as Class G, and are often very busy but typically differ from controlled airfields in they don’t handle large jets or heavy commercial traffic. Bend airport has been allocated funds for a tower that should be completed in a couple of years though. Balloon pilots are required to be licensed btw, and I would be surprised if they didn’t use the common frequency to announce they were over or landing on airport property.
