What a cracking bit of kit that is so much waste , takes up so little room beside the pond and the bonus is the built in uv . As always an honest reveal and review great video Tim
So far I think that this is much better than any of the ‘black box’ filters full of sponge. So I think for a pump fed pond the right size, they are really good. Maybe a smaller Koi pond on a skimmer.
loving the surge on the garden pond, cleaning every couple of days now so easy don't even get my hands wet and the water is great for the garden. Huge upgrade from the pressure filter. build quality much better than the Tempest. Highly recommend for a small pump fed pond pond.
Like my tempest and would consider this another add on. I must admit I find leaving the drain valve open when I start the pump helps purge material that sits below the media. Good video Tim as per normal - hope to see more pond visits 👍
Hi Tim, I think it's a very good filter, trapping that much. My thought's were when you set it up., That the flow rates were to high! Very impressed! Thank you.
That’s definitely a possibility mate. I’ll play around with the fines but it’s definitely working. Also no debris going into the pond. Pretty cool bit of kit for the right pond
@TimWaddington have decided to clean it every day after work but from.next week moving it to once a week. Have it after my main filter as was having problems with fines which is completely sorted now!
Very impressed Tim. Two tests id like to see is what, if anything, is passing the Surge and what weight of crud, not water, is being extracted. Otherwise looks a decent bit of kit. Cheers guys.
As it’s set up as a stand alone pump fed I’m not sure I can do that. The pond it’s on is over what they recommend. The water in the pond is crystal and always is. Now… because the pond has Tosai in that are constantly munching on the sides, then they are pulling the algae all the time.
Whats the intended use for these , Tim ? Most koi ponds are bigger than 5000l and if you had it as a polisher after your main filter most have them running at a lot more than the recommended 2500 lph ?? Is it meant as a smaller version of the Tempest , perhaps - for smaller ponds or grow-ons ? Be interested to see how it goes on further tests .
great vid I use one on my skimmer to feed the waterfall and its the best bit of kit. I also swapped out the uv lid with my tempest so I can have the extra uv in a filter shed and the surge on the outside :)
@@BigRobuk I am running at 10,000varipump on 40% so technically it should be 4000L per hour. Take into consideration the run then I reckon it’s around 3200L per hour
So it’s been ten days. What do you expect. Been nice to see original tempest next to it. Why is it worth changing from tempest to surge. Bee interesting to see
I still have my tempests running from day one. The surge has the UV so it’s a competitive filter for the ‘black box’ filters garden centres sell and that type. I didn’t expect that much waste to be caught to be honest.
Wow that is impressive. I have a very small 280 gallon pond with 6 x 10” koi. I’m using a pressure flow pond pumped filter system with a built in 18w UV. It’s just a pain to clean, sponges etc. I think this would be much easier as a filter system. Are they ok to be outside over winter? Frost proof etc? And how much water do you loose for each clean, did you say 5 gallons each time in the video?
@@TimWaddington It sounds perfect for me. How much space is needed above it to be able to remove the UV lamp for replacing? No info for this on the EA website. Is it a generic fit UV bulb or a specific EA fitting please?
Didnt expect that tim would you reccomend them as a add on to maybe help with fines used every now and again and is it just machanical or will it also have a biological effect aswell
Would you recommend one of these as a stand alone filter on a 5000ltr koi pond with 9 koi of varying sizes or go for an EazyPod? I'm torn between and it's quite a price difference.
Advice please my 12000litre pond i have a nexus 220 pump fed at one end //the other end currently have a pressure filter to shower ,,,could i use this instead of the pressure filter
@TimWaddington so on a 1000g koi pond with an aqua forte sieve and an eazypod and uv would one of these be worth adding to replace one of the above or as an addition? I also have a e.a vari 20000 pump, if I added one of these units could I tee off the pump to feed it as well as the eazy pod
Hi Tim. I have one of these running on my pond. when I first started using it the flow rate was quite high for about a week or 2. Then I added the filter gel and after a week the flow rate is quite slow. is this a good thing?
Did you add the gel direct to the media? I will note this and try and check our flow rate. Yours could have been that the media in the Surge was buoyant, like when you start a Nexus and the media floats, so would make sense the flow would slow down slightly. I’ll check for the same thing 👍
I thought this wouldn’t be necessary on a pond with the filtration you have, am I wrong for thing that this is a bad sign that your filtration isn’t doing the work?
@@TimWaddingtonI think I get what he’s asking. I’ve not watched the first video. Have you turned the other filtration off? If not, why is this still catching so much?
@@edenkoipond the Surge is set up on a separate pump, with the return pushing waste towards it. The pond was always spotless in the water. Yes you’re correct. The next video explains my thoughts but they beat any crappy garden centre black box. QT, grow on too.
You’ve sold it to me. Birthday at the end of the month. I’m having one to run along with my eazypod 👌

Do you pump out the eazypod into the surge and into the pond mate? So essentially using it as a UV on steroids? 😂

Hi Tim, could you use this in a 2” skimmer and return going into a blade??
Yes you certainly could depending on flow.
How do you decide between this and a tempest if coming after a filter but before a shower?
The tempest can take more flow rate. So for your purpose maybe a tempest.
Are there small carbon pieces going on the bag from back flush ?
