How to Do Leg Extensions with GREAT Technique (Grow Your Quads)

  • In this video, Alex and Sue from Physique Development discuss how to perform the seated machine leg extension exercise. You will learn how to set up, execute, and avoid common mistakes made in the leg extension. Learn how to maximize tension in the quads, avoid knee pain, and progress your strength with this video tutorial.
    The Leg Extension often gets a negative view. When performed with control and proper intent, this can be very safe and effective training for adding volume to your quad training.
    The key points to maintaining control within this movement:
    (0:20) How To Set Up For Leg Extension
    Step 1: Lining yourself up with the pivot point of the machine
    Step 2: Pulling yourself down into the seat to help stabilize your pelvis
    Step 3: Not flinging the weight out of the bottom - this is where many issues can start to arise with the knee and cause undue stress to that joint. The knee has little stability in this part of the movement. So, it may not be the exercise here causing your knee pain as much as your execution.
    Step 4: Control the eccentric part of each rep - maintain control and get the most out of the exercise.

    Haven't done Leg Ext. in a decade. Back in 2010s it was considered a contraindicated exercise. Know it seems to k. Might reconsider it another chance.

    Wouldn't it also make sense (similar to the lying leg curl) to just keep that last 15 degrees out? Like not going fully into the lengthened position ?

    are we meant to feel it mostly in the lower quad?

      Do you notice the lower quad during the workout or when you're sore and recovering from the workout?

    What about lowering? Should you pause at full extension then lower slowly, or does it not make a difference?

    What can I do if the machine doesn’t have enough Range of motion ?

      In during the eccentric and out during the concentric is a good place to start.

    U didn't show feet position
